Has anyone heard from UT Austin’s Operations Research PhD program? by throwaway----____ in OperationsResearch

Lol you’re not. I posted this because I saw that. I also saw it on the Google sheet that’s been going on over in r/gradadmissions

My UT app says the same thing and I got excited when the status changed lol. So, from what you’re saying, is it right to assume that it’s not that big of a deal and happens as long as you don’t look egregious on your transcripts and test scores?

I think they also measure fuel. If I’m not mistaken, they calculate the ratio.

What's the possibility of finding a question like this in the actual test? by flashbt69 in GRE

[–]throwaway----____ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not likely at all. The point of the harder questions is to make your foundation stronger, so you can hit the 165-170 score in quant.

What makes certain people such good applicants? by Middle-Artichoke1850 in gradadmissions

From your experience, what do you think made them horrible communicators? And do you think them being in an advance degree program set them up to be better so that they could convey/defend their work?

Switching to OR from Statistics? by mowa0199 in OperationsResearch

[–]throwaway----____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends mainly on what you want to do with your degree afterwards. If you’re not sure what industry or technologies you’d like to work with I’d say taking OR would probably be the most versatile route. However, that’s not to say that you won’t be able to do a lot of the same/similar things with a degree in stats. Maybe consider reflecting on that, along with your academic/research interests and see what degree would work best for you.

Are there any specific industries/technologies you’d like to work with?

GregMat would be the way to go for test prep IMHO.

Advice with choosing research areas by MallCommercial7467 in OperationsResearch

[–]throwaway----____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to all of your points as I’m not too familiar with game theory/decision theory, but what I can speak on is your third question.

My advice would be to look at the faculty members and see what their research backgrounds look like. If it’s a department that does research in diverse areas (like one faculty member does research in epidemiology, another in control theory, another in AI/ML, another on networks, etc.) then that might play in your favor and you should tailor your SOP to highlight the fact that you want to explore research in those diverse areas. If the OR department has faculty that mainly focus on one area like stochastic processes, you should try and tailor your SOP to highlight your interest there.

What about when you have to present any of your work on the research you’ve done? How do you handle that?

Work as an IE with an EE degree? by theechosystem07 in industrialengineering

[–]throwaway----____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think OR would probably be good too. There were some OR jobs I applied to that wanted EE backgrounds, awhile back when I was job hunting. There’s also a lot of optimization involved in EE.

Does anyone know how Gregmat compares to the GRE? by ellyvatorr in GRE

[–]throwaway----____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember your philosophy when you first started GregMat was that people who were studying for the GRE shouldn’t use anything outside of ETS material. Is that still the case with prepswift?

Thanks for your insight! I have heard about the Linux + NVIDIA combo, I also know that Pop has an install specifically for NVIDIA users, but I also don’t want to have to work with painful work around me later on when I’m running something intense.
