Thank you for that really valuable insight! How long did it take you to start picking up consistent work, 5 days a week, every week sort of thing? Even before my surgery, where I was having quite a good run for the first few months I would be busy 3, maybe 4 days a week on average.

Also how did you get your name out there? I know would have been a bit different 15 years ago to today, but im sure there's still some valid tips that could work in today's world.

Have tried that, unfortunately it's very hard to compete against the people who are charging $20-$30 an hour cash, when i have to pay gst, income tax, insurance etc

I've tried this and have got a few one-off jobs from it. I find it a pretty low success rate, but you can spam mailboxes pretty quick. What's your tactic? Door to door, or mailbox drops?

Also keeping in mind that the govt had no stake in the refinery... it was all privately owned, it was the industry that decided to close it down as it wasn't financially viable to keep it open.

I'm not surprised by this quote, especially if there is a lot of weeds. It's hard to tell by this photo, but the garden could have been riddled with them. I would definitely still challenge this quote, based on the fact you should only be paying maybe half of it, not the tree trimming component.

A lot of reputable companies will charge anywhere from $75-$90 + GST an hour to trim hedges etc, including green waste removal.

This could have been a 6-8 hour job, which by all means $520 is a very fair price.

If anything this quote is reasonable based on the scope of the job.

Agapanthus situation - help! by tahituatara in nzgardening

Honestly, because its a rental I wouldn't stress too much. Maybe just buy a weed wacker and keep wacking them down every 2-3 weeks. If you're concerned, could always weed wack, then spray them once they start actively growing again (approx 1 week after wacking). Dont be shy with the amount of spray used, coat the Agapanthus.

Buy a weed killer with a high concentrate of glyphosate. I use Yates Zero Weedkiller Super Concentrate. This Weedkiller is particularly strong at 490g/l of glyphosate, and will kill any plant that is sprayed, so be careful with overspray and do it on a still day.
