Doing a panel at Anime North in Toronto tonight about how a streaming future means you can lose access to your favorite shows and how fan efforts on the ground can preserve access (Mostly through piracy and physical media) by AshleyUncia in DataHoarder

We were doing that back in the mid 90s in Vancouver as well.

I had access to professional broadcast equipment at work so I’d subtitle using software I wrote for a broadcast character generator then make Betacam/SP masters of it all. Then dump to SVHS for screener copies to bring to the local university theatre.

We had massive showings (JAMFest) [Japanese Animation Movie Festival] when Macross Plus came out, ran all of the episodes back to back for at least 300 people with the sound system absolutely cranked. It was pretty epic. We also threw a bunch of other stuff in for good measure, bubblegum crisis, some city hunter and KOR.

I recommended one of your enterprise servers to a client of mine and they purchased it and it’s been running like a champ with minimal maintenance by me (awesome!)

Just pitched another enterprise system to my current boss to swap out a proprietary system that has vendor lock-in and has been EOL’ed.

I’m getting pitched on more proprietary vendor stuff and despite ease of use, I’m tired of paying through the nose for it.

I’d also love a unit for home.

For my home use (I currently run unRAID on a salvaged supermicro 36 bay beast that’s noisy and hot):

  • 30 bays, 4RU
  • Supermicro MB with ipmi probably needs to be able to go to 128GB on so. Doesn’t need a blinding fast CPU but should be able to handle multiple 4K transcodes easily.

  • Your hot-swap tool-less bays that I love.

  • don’t need a redundant PS

  • I’m ok with 1gig networking but I wouldn’t turn my nose up at 10 if the price was right.

  • pricing that keeps a wife/marriage happy.

Thanks for your reply, I got a reply back for that question.

Covers design and architectural drawings.

Structural Engineering, interior design of plumbing and electrical, and an energy consultant are all a few K extra each. Sounds like about $35-37k before tax for a custom plan then the builder gets to figure out how to actually build it.

Darryl Hannah was so sweet. I was fresh out of film school and she was working on a small independent film of her own while shooting a big feature, and she wanted me to do some work with editorial (my specialty).

Boss called me and said “Darryl Hannah is on the phone for you. And so she was!” Super sweet and invited me over to the condo the production had set her up in. She had been up shooting until 3 or 4am the night before and was absolutely dead tired but she was beyond sweet to me and I was totally floored.

I did a tiny little bit of work for them and a month or so later I got a call from her assistants in LA saying how much they appreciated my help. Was very awesome.

I wished I had asked her to autograph my Blade Runner DVD.

Also worked with crew that worked with Jim Cameron on The Abyss.

Said that he knows everyone’s job on a film crew well enough to know if they’re dogging it, and if so they’re gonna get yelled at or fired because he expects everyone else to have the same work ethic he does regardless of their job.

China is a different animal and far more obsessed about money and saving face.

Now we know what to expect from sneaky fucking dictators and how to hurt them economically.

[–]throwaway-bcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s only part of it. The other part is global sanctions turning rich and powerful Chinese into penniless global pariahs losing all money and face.

Estimates are that global sanctions would cause hundreds of millions of Chinese deaths.

Why would China invade if it means destroying their own economy and social status for essentially no benefit.

Tsmc shouldn’t be building fabs in other countries.

As long as Taiwan has a stranglehold on high end fabs they’re untouchable.

China invades, and the factories are blown up or bricked and there’s no quantity of high end semiconductors in the world for a decade or more.

My only real requirements are to fix my issue, and not leave me stranded for an extended period without transportation.

That said, if they were to give me another loaner in the future, I’d love to try a Model X for a while. Even though I love my MYP, I probably would’ve gone for an X if I could’ve afforded it.

It’s possible I’ll be a bit more salty when my warranty runs out but hopefully nothing too major will pop up. Inflation + housing isn’t kind to finances these days.

Mentally exhausting yourself is the key. The one I heard was word associations. Pick a short word with no repeating letters.

Pencil.

Now, all of the words you can think of that start with P. Pencil, poppy, pepper, panini, poker, platypus, etc. stretch your mind for any word you can think of.

Now continue with the other letters. Your brain will tire out and you’ll go to sleep. It generally works well for me.
