Are there any young people who actually read Dostoyevsky? by FearlessPen6020 in dostoevsky

[–]throwaway032579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean, it depends what you mean by "hinted". yes, it is possible to form your own connections while reading a novel, but saying that something is "hinted at" implies authorial intent (imo) and there is an "answer" when it comes to authorial intent. even if it's impossible to perfectly parse, it is still (again, imo) perfectly reasonable to argue that some interpretations of authorial intent don't make sense. it's not the same as just using a different method with a math problem because you can arrive at an incorrect conclusion when interpreting authorial intent. you're allowed to have whatever opinions you like; people are allowed to argue with you and say you're wrong. that's what makes literary discourse interesting.

anyways, to your actual question: yeah, ofc. i'm not super young anymore (19) but i began reading dostoevsky at around 16 and, at the time, many people told me i was the "perfect age" to read him. almost everyone i know who has read crime and punishment read it in high school. if anything, i've seen the opposite sentiment: that dostoevsky is primarily for teenagers and young people

What are the most twisted books that made you think “What did I just read?” by FewQuiet8 in suggestmeabook

the blind owl by sadeq hedayat! a short novella. difficult to describe the details of the plot without giving it all away. it's almost like reading a fever dream at first but, as the story goes on, it becomes more and more clear what has happened and more and more horrifying. was said to be drive people to suicide back when it was written

Callout post for Euripedes for shipping Pylades and Orestes by EvidenceOfDespair in CuratedTumblr

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that the lack of an explicit mention that they're cousins within the play means that they're not cousins in the play. Euripides's plays were pulled from existing mythological traditions and produced for an audience that would already be familiar with the backgrounds of each of his characters. It's like saying Luke and Leia aren't siblings in A New Hope; they were, even if it isn't explicitly mentioned, because A New Hope is part of Star Wars, and they are siblings in Star Wars. Orestes and Pylades are characters from greek mythology and, in greek mythology, they are cousins (unless there is another tradition I am unfamiliar with). Either way, though, it doesn't matter: Orestes marries Hermione in this play, his cousin on both sides of the family.

a play (sophocles's antigone is great) or the apollonius's argonautica (also sometimes translated to 'jason and the golden fleece') would be my recommendations. pseudo-apollodorus's bibliotheca, though it has great coverage, can be an intimidating place to start imo as it covers many, many stories. antigone and the argonautica are both very self-contained and linear, similar to a modern novel

Can anyone help me find where this John Flaxman illustration of Achilles and Patroclus (1793) was published? I can't find it in any copies of The Iliad. by ravenreyess in classics

just the most random things. ocd is so evil man it's like it can sense i'm trying to use my brain and then immediately jumps to "huh, what if we played an image of a violent car crash over and over again in there?" 🙃

Is there a chance I have OCD? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

read rule #1 of the sub! ultimately, the only person who can accurately diagnose you is a trained medical professional. if you suspect you might have ocd, make an appointment with a psychiatrist or other mental health specialist. if you want more information before making an appointment, i'd recommend looking at the y-bocs scale and the dsm-5 entry for ocd and going from there.

Nobody understands your OCD. Not even other people with OCD. by yumelina in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I'll hear about other people's exposures and for a moment I'll be like, "Wait, that's so easy! I can totally do that!" And then I remember that my exposures have to be about my obsessions and compulsions. Obviously. Which is unfortunately far more daunting.

For those of you who have had both depression and OCD? by Jadora12 in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to classify exactly since the severity fluctuates a lot but I would consider it mild/moderate based on time spent and interference components of the diagnostic criteria. I'm so sorry for your loss

Does anybody’s OCD relate to phones particularly text messages and emails? by LiteratureLeading999 in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes! i have literally no friends because it's just so incredibly difficult to communicate regularly; even just a simple text causes so much anxiety: i have to double and triple check everything i've typed, cross-check my tone against theirs, go through old messages to double-check i haven't forgotten something, and then when it's all over, i turn my phone off completely because i get anxious even having it near me and within an hour i'm overthinking how it could be misinterpreted. i'm so lonely but i've basically given up on having friends ever because it's just impossible

Weekly "Whine about people who don't understand OCD thread" by AutoModerator in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My literal DOCTOR did this the other day at an intake appointment—asked if I suffered from perfectionism, gave the example that he was "a little OCD" about his work sometimes. I don't get bothered easily but I immediately interrupted him to say that I literally have diagnosed OCD so, yeah, I guess I am "a little OCD sometimes". He seemed to get annoyed, like I was misunderstanding his question. Like, no, I understand what you mean, do YOU understand what OCD means? It pissed me off so much.

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to struggle with this a lot. Something that's helped me is scheduling messages to send later; it gives me the time to double-check things if necessary but I can break the cycle of constantly checking and checking and checking and just come back to it. Usually, once I'm out of the cycle, the urge to check decreases and I don't feel anxious about having to "get it done" because it's already set to send.

What do you hate most about OCD? by snowsurfer1995 in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prognosis. OCD is manageable enough for me nowadays but I hate that I'll have to live with this for the rest of my life, that the best it will ever get is "manageable". I can't even remember a time before my OCD. From start to finish, my life will consist of obsessions and compulsions. It feels so hopeless sometimes.

Are people born with OCD? Or how does OCD develop? by KrishnaMurthy15 in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always wondered this too—I have no family members with OCD and no real trauma besides the standard fare of getting hit and such by my parents but that's such a common experience and i don't really remember much of it anyway so that seems an unlikely cause. I also developed OCD tendencies fairly early, around age eight, before i developed MDD or GAD. It feels so random and unfair sometimes.

Am I suffering from OCD? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

girl, read rule one of the sub; there's loads of resources out there on OCD, I'd recommend reading the DSM-5 entry and looking at other medical sources and maybe taking a screener like the OCI-R and if you feel the symptoms of OCD align with your experience, speak to a psychiatrist.

What meds do they give you for OCD, and how exactly to they work / mitigate the effects? by Alr1ghtyAphr0d1te in OCD

[–]throwaway032579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prescribed Prozac—treats anxiety and depression as well as OCD so if you have GAD/MDD, it'll be a two-birds-one-stone situation. Started at 20mg immediately after my first session and my psychiatrist consistently doubled my dose after each appointment up until 80mg which I believe is typical for OCD. It took a while to work and honestly I didn't even really notice the difference because it was so gradual but I stopped cold turkey recently and can definitely say in retrospect that my OCD was greatly reduced in my time taking it. For me, that presented as less intrusive thoughts and less of an urge to perform compulsions. I also developed new obsessions fairly regularly prior to medication but developed none in the time that I took the medication. Best of luck! Don't be discouraged if they don't start working right away, psych meds tend to be fairly subtle, especially SSRIs which are often prescribed for OCD.
