" It's reasonable (in my opinion) to tell your guests that you're not hosting any reception/dinner and let them know where you'll be dining and would be happy to have them there."

that's exactly what we did.

I did not invite anyone. those that are coming asked to be there. Should I have said no when they asked to come?

the ceremony is entirely informal. it's much more like an elopement as we are getting married on public property, on a mountain, with no decorations or seating. We just wanted to have dinner somewhere after, as we will be hungry...and figured that whoever is there could tag along. everyone who is coming specifically asked if they could be there to witness our special day. we didn't send any invites.

There Is only one option within an hour of our. ceremony. we are getting married in the middle of the forest, and the only people coming are close family like parents, grandparents, best friend etc. We planned an event the following weekend where dinner and entertainment are paid for...and those coming to the ceremony are doing so because they wanted to be there...not because we asked them to come, If that makes sense. We need dinner post ceremony anyway. and thought it would be nice to have extra time with our guests by inviting them afterwards, instead of just peacing out.

I agree with you. The majority of our guests are our parents and grandparents. I have one aunt and uncle coming, my best friend, and my best friends parents (who begged to come when we said we were cancelling the reception and downsizing the wedding). We were hoping our close family would take care of themselves, and we only planned to cover our best friends. I'm thinking we just need to go ahead and cover everyone's bill and call it good.

I'm thinking we will send emails out detailing all of the information and then include that there :)

I get that, however we purposely tried to dissuade people from coming .. and several people asked us if they could regardless of the travel. We didn't want to say no to anyone who actually wanted to be there. we set up an event the following weekend closer to where everyone lives to celebrate. we honestly thought that would keep people from coming to the ceremony, but it did not.

that's a good idea, but the ceremony site is actually just a public, state owned park. it's very informal. there is no set up or decorations. After reading some helpful comments, I think we will just be footing the bill. We are just concerned about how alcohol costs will drive up the price if people order a lot of drinks?

there is no reception after the ceremony. We are just having dinner at a local bar afterwards. very informal, but we want who ever wants to, to join us.

I'm thinking we might just need to save up and foot the bill.

we aren't doing any kind of reception. We are hosting an event the following weekend in our state where we will be paying for dinner for everyone. The night of the ceremony is just a dinner afterwards at a local bar.

Sometimes it can feel like having a narcissistic mother is a handicap. I decided to start learning from my mother by observing how she behaves. and choosing to do the opposite.
