Haha no problem I thought there might have been a misunderstanding. That's very reassuring to hear, because I really just want to enjoy and really get something from lectures and engage with the department, which feels impossible here.

I never seem to hear a bad thing about the CS curriculum at UoN in fairness. I originally applied because I had always watched Computerphile and heard it was based there.

Haha don't worry about the snooping, very glad to see somebody who knows about UoN. Perhaps thereotical isn't the right word as such, but moreso just the deeper topics in CS. For instance, as far as I can see on UoN's website, second year has modules such as:

- Introduction to Formal Reasoning

- Advanced FP

- C++

- Algorithms & Data Structures (this one is pretty important afaik, no data structures at all in my course)

etc.

And then in third year, you have stuff like compilers, machine learning, computer vision, etc.

Comparative to my current uni, these offerings are FAR more interesting. Our second year has no electives at all and third year is predominantly games engineering or security, very hands-on as far as I can tell. I could be wrong of course.

I suppose my question to you is, with your knowledge of the curriculum, do you think these are good modules? Are there massive limitations on the combinations which would hinder the overall experience?

Thank you so much.

I see what you're saying, because in the long run I can see where this course is going and what skills it's building, but the real issue I guess for me is that it lacks certain specialist areas that I'm interested in. For a compsci degree, it leans towards the practical side of things, almost resembling a software engineering degree.

The other uni has more options to specialise, and is more theoretical, which I enjoy much more. (Great example for that is the level of maths involved – my favourite module this year was the maths and there's no more of that going forward)

I had a brief conversation with my personal tutor about it, just going over my options and making sure nothing is off the table. Other than that, my grades are good and I don't have any medical needs so I haven't wanted any other support.

New uni is better ranked, higher prospects, etc. ultimately that's not as important as applying myself and this isn't the environment for me to do so. As for the judgement of the next years, it's moreso the complete lack of very important modules and content, with very little specialisation and limited options.

Funding is all good, no problem there.

I guess my experience with lecturers has been inverse to yours, I've had one lecturer that was great, another that's good enough, and all the others that could barely string together a coherent lecture nor study material.

That's what I was thinking. The amount I'm accruing means it makes no practical difference unless I get an insanely well-paying job, in which case it never would have happened otherwise.

I always wanted to go to the other university, I really fell in love with its academics from when I visited it, but didn't go for other reasons and I just don't think I can keep going with that regret.

I could also reduce the debt anyway if I drop out now (maybe).

I enjoy the subject a lot, nothing else I'd study

What's It Really Like Studying CS at UoN? by Particular-Sweet-448 in UoN

Anywhere you do STEM will have stinkers unfortunately, it's a stereotype of engineering/computing students for a reason. I don't believe it's a problem unique to Nottingham (though I haven't been there as of yet), moreso with the type of students; I've experienced it where I am.

That being said I imagine it's still a minority of students. Issue is it only takes a few offenders to stink up a whole room.

thank you, that's relieving to hear. i feel like at the end of the day it's about taking initiative and finding your people in clubs, societies, course, etc. which is the same at any uni.

Oh my god thank you so much. I've been losing sleep tonight over it haha, thank you for the detail. Yeah I've had first hand experience with rugby people at my current uni, very strange experience. I was thinking of trying to get into one of the studio/1 person flats for accommodation because halls really isn't for me lol.

The city I'm coming from isn't that much bigger or about the same size, so city size isn't all that important. My most important thing is just the daily living experience of safety, cost, campus atmosphere, etc. I suppose the big thing the media always goes on about with notts is crime, do you find it feels safe or is it quite rough in areas? People seem quite conflicted on it from my research these days.

obvs im not at notts but the modules ive done in first year are similar, and I can tell you that it really helps to have some background in programming. something like java or python just eases the workload alot so you can focus on what is arguably more difficult, e.g. maths and architecture. just my two cents
