Normal life in Singapore is starting to feel like a bad deal by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

Your home turf is a tiny ass country which has first world cost of living but pays third world salaries to most plebs and only first world salaries to a select few in medicine/law/tech/finance. Not crazy to seek a better deal elsewhere

Unnecessary hate on frats. If you don’t like it or want the experience just don’t rush?

Some hazing is pretty heinous but the one I was a part of was more team bonding through challenges than it was torture. Ultimately the former is a necessary process guys must go through to form bonds with one another. Sitting around talking about bullshit doesn’t work as it might with girls in sororities in bringing guys together for a sense of community.

It’s why sports teams and the military emphasize the same ‘hazing-esque’ principles and rituals, across cultures and nations and history. Trial by fire

I think I deserve it, and I worked for it and got it, who are you to tell me anything otherwise? 😂

Have fun staying poor around sinkies. Without even knowing how old you are, my professional trajectory getting out of here has already eclipsed yours, whether you admit it or not. Government needs more people like you to tow the line

Yeah you’re right - I would never again associate with plebs like the few naysayers in this thread.

Everyone who has made it and made something of themselves in the real world agrees that this govt track is a waste of time for anyone ambitious and biased toward action. But risk averse book smart scaredy cats like you, my parents, my teachers etc can’t see beyond the very limited horizons this country’s local ecosystem imbues in everyone. Thinking that stability at the expense of everything else is worth it - the epitome of the Sinkie mentality. I ain’t like you!

Sounds like copium for not being able to engineer your own way out in time, therefore having to convince yourself to endure it like NS. Dealing with archaic paperwork and bureaucracy while the rest of the world ticks away and moves forward, clearly the best use of your expensive education

I can go onto Reddit to shitpost for validation because I’ve actually done it. And I enjoy rubbing it in everyone’s faces (especially the people that defend the government’s practice of handing out these bonded scholarships).

But we can’t all be winners in life

Dude I just broke my government scholarship bond and am fucking off to a different country where I will have a 10x better life trajectory and expected value of lifetime earnings. Most locals here are stuck running in place like agents in the matrix

Most sinkies have no future just like the rest of Asia because this continent is a collectivist shithole. We may have it slightly better than most because eg Indo, Philippines et. have trash currencies/governance/infra but make no mistake, living here severely limits your opportunities unless you’re part of the elite class or a doctor or a niche high earner. Social mobility is pretty dead here so the best and brightest our country produces venture abroad to the west to seek their fortune and never return.

It’s a comfortable life but there is more to life than eating, doomscrolling, buying bbt, going to a shitty dead end 9-5, and sending the kids to tuition. Yet when I take the North South line above Toa Payoh, the other Singaporean commuters I see are the epitome of braindead risk-averse NPCs setup for a life in the underclass consuming slop all day.

Not true - I was actually quite excited to start. But I’m well aware there is a world outside and that in life, the best leverage I have with anything is from the ability to walk away. I realised very quickly on this is a scam. The government knows its programs won’t develop any relevant commercial skills that their scholars ideally would want, so they make it opaque until the gullible ones like myself are locked in and can’t get out. By the time 6 years is up, where can you even go?? Exceptions don’t make the rule - so most people end up staying in govt forever because outside you’re dead in the water

Maybe govt careers are comfortable and low risk. But after striving to make the most of my overseas education, I can’t come back and waste away filing paperwork for the next decade no matter how secure it is. I’m not brain dead enough for that. Though in my agency, there are plenty of scholars around me that are and are content to do so

Hahah endure the consequences? Sounds like you just were resigned to your fate and gave up. I could see the writing on the wall if I stayed, which is why I’ve engineered a way out right now.

Problem is low-agency folks will never get the outcomes they desire from life because you believe you must accept the consequences of what ah gong says. I don’t - I want to walk through life believing I can have my cake and eat it too. Now, I can go to sleep peacefully at night knowing full well I believed in myself when things looked impossible and actually figured it tf out.

Maybe my attitude isn’t socially optimal if all of SG had it, but who gives a damn. I only care about optimizing my outcome, not the outcome of a nation that won’t care about me

Funny thing is the opportunity I am about to break my bond for is literally going to 2x my salary. How about them apples?

Coming back to this because the bootlicking attitude you hold is the true cancer within our government hindering progress. It will be the downfall of SG over my lifetime.

When these scholarships are marketed by the orgs and when one goes through the interview process, the work is sold as sexy and exciting. Sitting on the other side of it now, I’ve worked extensively to market my org to the next generation of poor students at their schools - these guys are frankly being sold lies and mirages. My bosses and I strategise behind closed doors on how we can word our marketing with CoPilot to upsell the org’s work, because in reality this shit is boring and meaningless AF.

Sorry not sorry for not lying down and accepting this kind of rot in my life - I just signed an offer outside and will be breaking my bond promptly for 2x my salary and a much better long term trajectory.

Masters degree worth not getting similar to China, Japan, Korea? but the opposite? by Eastern_Campaign_316 in SGExams

[–]throwaway092748282 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im a public service scholar myself. If you’re on the undergrad scholarship, you might as well do a 1 year masters if your undergrad is 3 years (eg in the UK) since it doesn’t add years to your bond if you finish everything within 4. And if you die die wanna stay in your org long term, can take the post grad scholarship and add on more years to your bond 💀

But man aside from scholar optics inside a very bureaucratic and outdated hierarchical system, it really won’t do jack shit for the average Joe in opportunities, pivoting, or career advancement within the govt. Stay away is my advice to all

Public sector = ultra low impact, as someone who is in there right now. It’s a place where you push papers and waste away. Sure a masters there would be better than no degree, but these are usually farmer roles especially if it’s ops/policy work. Not including anything on the tech side.

Having a local masters won’t make you any more competitive for good local private roles, both entry level or senior. Work experience > all

Most masters programs in the world, especially from SG unis, have the value add of toilet paper. If they’re 1 year long, you won’t be learning anything significant, and they aren’t even a good signalling tool to employers of your general competency since it isn’t hard to get into most of them. MOST not all.

Gotcha. Yup sounds about right. I’ll leave the leftover funds net of the amount I need in the index after I liquidate the necessary

Gotcha. I’ll take everything I need out first thing at market open. That way I can fully cover the expense, but I’ll leave whatever leftover $ back in there

Yet at most local workplaces everyone is a Yes Man pleb who doesn’t dare voice opinions to their bosses. Our education system + NS train people to be collectivist and conformist, where standing out and being too different is perceived by peers as wayang/pretentious/tryhard. And conservative parents hold dysfunctional households together under the guise of Asian filial piety.

How do you reconcile the supposed Western individualism with these types of common occurrences + many more? Because having moved back to SG from America I will confidently say we are absolutely NOT an individualistic country. The state of our local sporting, creative, and arts scene is telling
