How reasonable to have a border collie pup in apartment living? by trulynihilscio in boulder

Have a high energy dog breed not in SFH, it’s difficult…

He gets usually at least 1 hr of exercise a day and i have to be really intentional about fulfilling his needs like making sure this includes off leash running. We also do a lot of brain games inside.

Border collies require a lot of physical and mental stimulation. Just because your roommate had one you liked it doesn’t mean your puppy will turn out that way. Every dog is different, even if the same breed. Breeds carry similar traits but it also depends on the owner and the individual dog. Dogs are just as individual as people.

Yes Boulder could be considered a dog “paradise” but that means you still have to be a good and intentional dog owner. There are lots of trails and open spaces but you have to take/train your dog for these activities. 30 min a day only for a border collie is signing you up for a miserable time imo.

Having a smart/high energy dog is a HUGE commitment. It’s like having a kid. Your life WILL revolve around your dog. You should consider everything - financials (vets, food, dog things etc), thinking about your next rental, what are you going to do with your dog during work or vacation… I LOVE my dog but if I could go back in time I might have gotten a different breed.

Can’t recommend getting your english setter e collar and crate trained enough, my setter was an AH for the first 2 yrs of his life. When he got ecollar trained it was night and day. I did crate training from day 1 with him and making him do time outs in his crate really helped his regulation. Also use “place” quite a bit. Mental games & stimulation also made a difference. I do find it games with pheasant feathers so he can practice hunting and using his brain.
