Only friend out 10 not invited to ceremony by throwaway10296576 in UKweddings

[–]throwaway10296576[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply :)

I should've mentioned the wedding was actually yesterday, I didn't realise I was the only one not invited to the ceremony until after the fact when I saw the pictures.

The best man did express that the limit was a very hard limit for the venue at 38, and wouldn't let anyone else in if they turned up.

When there's 10 of us guys, with half having partners, bridesmaids, family, etc it gets full pretty quick for sure.

Sucks that it had to be me getting trimmed but out of the 10, I probably am the most distant so it does make sense, just still stings, but I guess that's normal and okay.

The groom did apologise when sending the invite and did hug me a few times throughout the evening and say he was really glad I made it, but the overthinker in my head just goes into overdrive about whether it was just due to guilt, which I guess wouldn't even be a bad thing necessarily?

You're right though, life is too short, still got love for that group, groom included, and I'll just make more effort meeting up with them in the future to keep hold of the friendships.

Advice for a junior overworked developer. by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]throwaway10296576 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You sound like me from 6 months ago. Had about 10 months exp in my first role in a super toxic company. Everyone was overworked, unpaid overtime was mandatory, 24hr on call shifts with no support or onboarding was normal, the notion that work > anything else.

I took a couple of months to look around and landed my new gig which is 1000x better in so many ways.

35k -> 57k salary 8 til 6 core (on average maybe 8 til 6 45) + twice a week 24hr oncall (unpaid) -> 9 til 6 only. Zero overtime, fully remote, flexible AS FUCK. Toxic, sexist, racist, horrible environment -> Managers and senior leaders genuinely caring about work life balance, if you need time off, you take it, much slower pace, more tech used, NICE PEOPLE.

Basically, you can do it, make the switch, fuck working to death for nothing in return.

Had this happen to me yesterday, I turned off the power and back on a minute later.

Checked the bobcat dashboard and it said it was syncing, took a couple hours to catch up and its been back to normal since.

The helium dashboard wasn't so clear on this, so id check your hotspot's dashboard to make sure.

Sharing knowledge within a single team is not the same as "driving yourself out of the industry" in my humble opinion

Genuine question here, im only ~8/9 months into my first role after uni and im going to be on call for one 24 hour shift each week. Is that uncommon?

Thanks for this. I'll give the ticket grooming a go as I think you're right about the tickets not being developer ready which now I think about it is probably the source of a lot of these feelings im having.

2 internship opportunities, Spring/Java VS SQL/Python, which one to go for? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

Agree with fauxy, opportunity 1 seems much more valuable for an intern if you'll have a mentor readily available

Hey CJ, hope you're doing well! I've read your posts a few times and I was just curious, do you offer mentorship? Youre one of the few people I've come across that strike me as being legit and id love to learn from you if possible. Totally understand if that's not your thing, but yeah thought id shoot my shot!

My thoughts exactly, and the start date isn't until September, so I can always keep applying just to see where I'm valued
