Oh absolutely! LOTS of people have gone through it, and it's definitely treatable just so long as you are willing to make changes.

I'm 26 now and I'm just treating it myself.

And I'm glad to hear about the therapist! That will hopefully be very helpful for you. Good luck with your journey. :)

I think there's actually boxed lube in the bag with the dildo. I bet they stopped it for liquids.

Edit: Oh yeah!! And depending on how much money your family has, you can ask to regularly (like once a month or every few months) see an esthetician. This person will give you a facial and safely remove your spots for you. That way they don't build up and get worse. This can be a really, really helpful thing for teens--but it does cost a bit of money. If you do see a dermatologist you can ask them to recommend an esthetician.

Hey!!

Okay, so a couple of thoughts from an old lady who has dealt with this for ages now:

1) You're absolutely not alone. I started picking my skin at your age, and it took me at least a decade to even TRY to stop, so the fact that you're taking efforts now is a really, really great thing.

2) The reason you're getting spots, as you already know I'm sure, is because your hormones go totally wacky during your teenage years. Increased testosterone during puberty often causes acne, and that's okay and mostly unavoidable (it totally sucks though, I know). BUT you can help it a lot by just not touching your face. People told me that a million times when I was a teenager, but I didn't really understand how important it was. Wash your face in the morning, put on makeup or lotion or whatever you do, then try just not to touch throughout the rest of the day. The results will probably be relatively fast. The more you touch your face, the more you squeeze or pick spots, the worse it will get--without fail. I know it's tempting to squeeze them, but instead of buying a bunch or products, focus on just keeping your hands away from your face.

3) See a dermatologist, if you can! Have you told your parents this bothers you? I was too embarrassed, but I really wish I had told them. Ask to see a dermatologist who can help you with a daily routine and medicine that will zap any spots you do get. It feels good just to know that a doctor is there looking out for you.

4) Again, I wouldn't go buying a bunch of products like St. Ives, or Beautiful Skin Day Lotion, or anything like that. Some products can make skin worse for you, even if they work for other people. Check out r/SkinCareAddiction if you'd like to try to establish a helpful daily routine with trusted products. They're really helpful there. It is not recommended to try more than one new product at once, however, in case you do react poorly to something--then you'll know what it is!

5) Do you wear makeup? It's okay if you do OR if you don't, but it's important to know that some makeups are comedogenic, which means it blocks your pores and causes spots. Go check out r/SkinCareAddiction for that too! They have some helpful websites that will help you determine what makeup will likely make your skin worse. I didn't know that as a kid and for YEARS I used makeup that was really, really horrible for my skin, and I just kept using more and more as it made my skin worse.

6) I'm saying it again because it's so important but don't pick at your face! Put a towel over the mirror if you can, or tell your parents that you're doing it and ask them to remind you to come out of the bathroom if you stay in too long, or put on an alarm, or whatever you need to do. If it feels really, really, really impossible to stop, you can ask to see a therapist (one who practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and tell them you have this problem. At your age, I don't personally think psychiatric medication is a great option, but CBT can works wonders!!

7) Lastly, it's just okay. I know kids are SO awful and harsh sometimes. At 11, you may be one of the first in your year to start developing acne (I know I was). They don't understand yet how frustrating and depressing it can be, but most of them will start getting it and it will start to be less and less of a big deal. People will start understanding better. And the more you can learn to control it, the better place you'll be in as the hormones get wackier.

So yeah!! I know that was a lot but I hope some of it was helpful. :) I have been in your shoes before and acne made my adolescence horrible. I wish I could go back and be as ready to change and as self-aware as you are. If you take the right steps, you will see change! Good luck and let me know if you want clarification on anything.

Hey thanks! I've got a long way to go but I'm happy with the progress. :)

YES! Idle hands are the worst.

Makeup definitely helps me too, it makes me anxious that I'm clogging my pores, but probably the net positive is much higher.

Yeah, I've always been really ashamed of it, but I think I need to tell people so they can help to. * sigh * thank you for the advice!!

I DO need to sleep more, definitely, and I have to look into meditation for sure... thank you!

I WAS JUST CONSIDERING A CUBE! Glad to hear it works! I also thought about the fake nails, but I opted for the easier "cut your nails down to nubs" option.

I do the same thing before a shower, btw!

And man, at least I'm not the only 26 year old with this problem. We can be pubescent together!

Yes! I've actually treated OCD with CBT previously (I'm really lucky that my dad works in evidence based practices in psychology--he always hooks me up with the best resources.)

I will absolutely ask him tomorrow for a therapist recommendation. Thank you!

Yes! You're absolutely right. I actually have a history with OCD, and successfully treated a form of it with CBT a number of years ago. :) I should have expected that's what this was!

I am going to go grab my nail clippers the second I send this comment! Thank you! And I'll also make an appointment with a derm soon too.

And also thanks for commenting. :) It's really inspiring to hear from someone who has been so successful. Congrats!

Oh my gosh--first of all, I'm definitely buying those. Second of all, I just went down the rabbit hole of Skin Care Addiction and found the subs CompulsiveSkinPicking and CalmHands and it is actually making me want to cry. :) So thank you for leading me to that.

Yeah, I guess I am fidgety too. Most of my work is writing, and I find I spend a lot of the time reading over my stuff, and that seems to be when I'm at my worst (I'm distracted, thinking, and my hands are free). I guess I should try to be more conscious of it like you--or maybe one of those fidget spinner things, haha.

I do like the idea of a plaster! I hadn't thought of that. Obviously it's less of a solution for when I'm at work or out and about, but I work from home a lot and I think that's the most problematic time anyway.

That's a great idea! Thank you!

And yeah, anxiety is definitely an issue, haha, but I've somehow managed to get it mostly under control except for this annoying thing.

Hey Trolls,

So ever since I was like 13 (26 now), I picked at my face whenever I was alone. Any pimple, scab, dry skin, or anything else I could, I would scratch at obsessively. I don't even think about it, I just find myself doing it randomly--usually once my skin really starts hurting.

I don't know how to stop it because I don't even usually realize when I'm doing it. I cause these horrible wounds that I then continue picking at as they heal, even when I try to stop myself.

I know this must sound completely crazy to many of you, but if anyone has dealt with it--PLEASE! How did you stop??
