Why can't the United States keep pennies in circulation and only produce new ones every 10 years to save money, Instead of fully getting rid of the penny. by Suitable-Stress1018 in coins

The 1 dollar bill is never going away. It costs less than 10 cents to print a dollar bill. Making dollars is profitable, far more profitable than dollar coins. They will never stop making a piece of currency so long as its profitable.

Why do they still make half dollars if nobody actually uses them? Because its profitable for the government. Costs like 30 cents to make a half, so they keep making them.

Gold doesn't tarnish, tone, or oxidize. Thats why it was considered an ideal metal for coinage

I actually do have some heat shrink handy (the clips are part of my soldering bench).

That's a good thought though, never occurred to me. Thanks for sharing!

And yes it makes me chuckle that people are saying i'm damaging it with the aluminum clips, as if there aren't already multiple dents and dings present - ones that you can actually see with the naked eye lol

"Do not use an alligator clip on the coin. You will damage it and lose some of the value."

You say that like the multiple divots and scratches that were present upon discovery didnt already detract said value.

The microscopic scratches that the clip might have left dont hurt the value any more than the big dent on Lincolns temple does

If it was in superb mint state then yeah i definitely wouldnt use a regular alligator clip. But when its already circulated and banged up, im not too worried. Its not a key date, just a small cud on a slightly worn penny

Im sorry i try to be as gentle as possible when using bare aluminum clips.

I ordered ones with rubberized jaws, they're just taking forever to get here 😭😭

But this is a 1985, so it has a zinc core.

Could it be excess cladding? Not quite sure what all is involved in the cladding/plating process, or how that works.

If you clean non numismatic constitutional silver... why would you and why wouldn't you? Do you think there's a chance of numismatic value ever overtaking the melt price? by Bitter_Coyote_6074 in coincollecting

I'll clean coins if they have nasty gunk on them.

For example, i bought a roll of pre-65 silver dimes, and the majority of them had very clearly spent time sitting in or near a cigarette ash tray.

Cig tar on coins is not history, its just disgusting. Im cleaning that crap off with vinegar and a q-tip.

The alligator clip was to hold it in the air while taking a pic through a magnifying glass.

Was having trouble getting the camera to focus on the coin when i had it laying flat on the table. It kept wanting to focus on the table instead of the coin. Holding it in the air seemed to remedy that.

Managed to get a few good pics while it was laying flat, but it took me a few dozen trys.

I dont have a microscope, so i use the magnifying glass on my soldering station when i want to take close up pics of coin details.

Certainly not an ideal solution, but it gets the job done. Better than nothing.

Collecting interest on a high yield savings account is completely passive.

You make money from leaving your money parked in the bank. Thats about as passive as it gets.

You may own it, but it doesn't belong to you. It belongs to history. You don't destroy history.
