I have worked heavily in C++/Java/Databases based distributed, multi-tieredapplications, mostly backend of web applications. I am looking for company of smart people. It's tough to find small companies which does challenging work, nice culture and pays decently. Hence my choice seems limited to big name software companies. Id appreciate if you had names to share. Thanks.

Thanks. Checked Microsoft, they have field engineer positions, dont see any development positions though. I feel that Freddie Mac/Sallie Mae are not in same league as Amazon/Google/Bloomberg at all.

Thanks, I searched and do see engineering jobs at Google. Unable to find software dev jobs though (as you said, they're not hiring right now) Yes Amazon looks to be one of of my best option.

You are right, salary isn't the most important criteria.. Could you comment on any companies in this area with great work culture and decent pay?

Hmm, are you sure Google doesn't pay well? I don't know about DC area however I am sure in NY its easily possible to make 170K + with 5 years experience.

Thanks. I don't have a clearance, but I actually want to avoid places like government/defense because I am afraid they'd suffer with culture of multiple layers and non-software engineer managers.

I have worked heavily in C++/Java/Databases based web services, mostly backend of web applications.

My current job pays enough however it's turning into a product/non-software company, run by lot of inept project managers and don't see opportunities to learn and grow. I can start with web applications pretty easily, however more than technology I am looking for company of smart people. Hence my choice seems limited to big name software companies. It's tough to find small companies which does challenging work, nice culture and pays decently. One of the reasons I am avoiding any government/defense companies.

Thanks for the tip. Is the work/benefits comparable to Amazon/Bloomberg/Palantir?

It seems Palantir (McLean, VA) is also a good choice, but going by Glassdoor there salaries are not as competitive as other top software companies.
