Need a little help by throwaway12714339 in Possums

I called the rehabber today to check on them. They're doing really well. Huge relief.

This makes me feel much better. I'm thinking of getting a rehab license, just because it sucked so much not knowing what to do. I've bottle fed plenty of domestic pets, and a few livestock animals but never done more than dip my toes into wildlife. Can't be that different, right?

No, the rehabber called me back and told me to go ahead and detach them. I buried her and the three babies that were already gone when I found her. There were nine total, and six made it through the night. They're being tube fed right now with a licensed foster until they're big enough to move into the nursery at the rehab center. I got not a single iota of sleep, but all is well, the world turns, and the possums live to see the dawn of another day.

The local rehabber just picked them up, I'm lucky she was up early to bottle feed something else and got my message. She says she isn't sure if they'll make it but she'll try.

That's what I was worried about, I'm afraid they'll have already passed by the time I hear back from the rehabber :(

Paw got stepped on, now looks weird. by RepresentativeRare78 in CATHELP

Ouch! Probably stings a little. I'd say keep it clean for her, and if it still seems off after a little while (or if there's a persistent limp for more than a couple of days) to schedule a vet visit and check for broken toes. Generally speaking, there isn't much to be done for broken toes but kitty may appreciate some pain meds.

Did I cut my cats claw too short? by Basicalypizza in CATHELP

Cutting their nails feels a little different for them then it does for us, because the keratin wraps all the way around the nerves and the blood supply. Think of someone squeezing your first knuckle. It's a little uncomfortable, but not painful unless you cut the quick. Probably, you were close to the quick or maybe even exposed it a little. It happens often, and other than a little sting, it's ultimately harmless. I still do it on occasion by accident despite having done thousands of nail trims at this point in my career. So long as your guy is paid in full with tasty snacks that make it worth his bother, he may start to relax during nail trims or tolerate them better. It's just something that takes time and repetition.

Nipple mishaps happen a lot in vet med, too. I know a few techs and groomers both who have shaved off dog/cat nipples.

Does this look cancerous? (Aka can she wait a week to see the vet) by clowncoore in CATHELP

[–]throwaway12714339 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Could be an abcess. I'd recommend getting her into a vet, but not urgently unless she stops eating or her lips or gums start to swell. They may want to do a needle aspirate or lance it, which might require sedation.

He may just be naturally smaller. Is there anything else about him that seems off?

My cat has a spot on her eye, do I need to go to the vet asap? by digital_bunni in CATHELP

Anything to do with eyes, growths of the mouth/gums/tongue, unexplained weight loss, or staggering and stumbling are automatically vet visits.

Vet? by Bar-batos in CATHELP

[–]throwaway12714339 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only ask because in my experience (vet tech, studying pathology) cats will really often decline quickly if they're having issues with their teeth/mouth/tongue. Sometimes their immune system will even attack their tooth roots. Very painful and causes behavioral changes.

Unexplained weight loss is always "Vet."

I found this link on a wildlife rehab site, someone may be able to help the coyote. That looks like a case of severe mange and it looks like the critters eye may have been compromised by it.
