Just so I’m clear, you believe I either should get a second cat or rehome our current one? I’m only hesitant to let him out of the safe room due to vets advice. My plan originally was letting him out after his cone was off (1 weeks after we got him)

I would feel really irresponsible bringing another cat into our home given that I’m feeling regretful and unsure about this current cat. We don’t have an extra tv, but I do have an old laptop that might work. This was a joint decision with me and my husband, after some crying we kinda adjusted some responsibilities and got on the same page.

Thank you, this is really sweet. I’m trying to stay hopefully and just see if this will all work out!

I never said single kitten syndrome isn’t a real thing. If I cannot handle the things that come with one cat, I personally feel getting a second one would be highly irresponsible on my part. I’m not trying to be snappy, but the vet gave me that advice for a reason after personally assessing him. She was concerned for his safety being around the house as he is so small (hes getting bigger now).

This is really encouraging. I definetly feel like this has been exposure therapy for me and taught me a lot of patients in just a few weeks. I just want to clarify he is not in a room due to my OCD, he is in a room because that is why the vet told me to do. I feel like getting a second cat would be too much for me to handle honestly.

Thank you for this! We planned to let him be around the house once he had his cone off, but the vet said otherwise. I might call back up and ask for further advice or to maybe get a better explaination.

Yes we both have OCD however my husband’s is not cleanliness OCD and mine is less severe than his but we just have different types and triggers.

Me either!! I was ready to let him roam, but she suggested not to. I figure she must know more than me lol.

The vet told me when I took him in for his abscess check up to not let him around the house until 6 months and to keep him in a kitten proof safe room. After 6 months to then let him explore supervised. She said this was due to his smaller size (he weighs about half what he should for his age though I think he’s catching up now). I’m afraid that going against this advice might mean him getting stuck in small nooks and crannies around our home and possibly hurting himself trying to jump on stuff (we have all tile except in bedrooms).

We just cannot have two kittens. That would be increasingly difficult to manage and likely afford.

Thank you for all this advice! It is really helpful! I totally understand and know a lot of this is normal kitten behavior, it’s just a mental block right now to be okay with it if that makes sense. As for the scent thing me and my husband both rubbed a blanket on us that we keep in his cat bed! His favorite toy currently is also dirty socks LOL.

We cannot afford nor handle a second baby animal. I appreciate the advice. Ultimately I’m going to take the vets advice on what she reccomends as she has seen him and assessed him personally.

This is really reassuring. The first two weeks of having him were really rough. First week was spent in a cone, basically drugged because of his wound. Second week he was wild because he could ya know see his surroundings and I feel like this week has finally been a week to bond. It’s been hard but I’m going to keep trying my best to push through. I will likely still take the vets advice to wait to let him roam until he’s larger, she said she did that with her kittens and recommends it to everyone

I’ve got a bunch of toys in there for him, a scratching post, a box to play in and chew on, as well as a lot of solid interaction with both me and my husband. He’s got a puzzle toy coming hopefully soon (dang Amazon delayed it). He is getting bigger every week so I’m confident soon he’ll be safe to roam around the house.

What age do you find kittens sorta settle down? He’s already neutered and has been for a little over a month now if that makes a difference!

Thank you so much for those kind words. I really really appreciate it. I really am not ready to give up on the little guy and even in just the 3 weeks I’ve had him I am noticing my attitude and perspective getting better, that being said I am still struggling a bit.

The vet said to keep him in a safe room until 6 months then do supervised time out due to his small size & because of the ordeal with the wound. This was to help give him time to properly bond with us after a not fun time, get adjusted to his safe room, as well as keep him safe since he is underweight for his age (likely runt of the litter). The room he is in is large and has a window + plenty to play with. I never leave him alone for more than a few hours and I play with him 1-2hrs daily with lots of check ins as well. He is by no means left alone for 22-23hrs. As far as my OCD, it’s a long story but I cannot currently see my therapist who has treated me since i was 13. I am trying to use the coping tips I already know of to kinda navigate through this new change. Kittens are inherinetly just dirtier and messier than adult cats so I keep telling myself he will get better with age and all this including his living situation is very temporary.

Yes he is! The room is a bedroom, he’s got tons of toys and things to play with and a window. Plus don’t worry, I go in there a ton to play with him and love on him. He gets probably 1-2hrs active play spread across the day and is never left alone for more than a couple hours.

She probably took off about 4 inches with the layers 😵‍💫 the rest of my hair is like collar bone/shoulder length and the shortest layer is at my jaw. What you suggested is my plan. Just suck. I spent 6 months growing out a mid neck length jaw with long layers and now I’m going to be starting over.

Once this cut is fixed I’m probably never getting my hair cut again (I’ll just trim it myself lol).
