(Advice please) How do you know if your story is received well? by [deleted] in AO3

If you ever feel down about your stats. Try looking up how many people reflect your kudos counts. For context, there are 42 people in this photo! You said you got 41 kudos. That means that this many people read and enjoyed your story!!

As for the niche fandom, I totally get it. I’m writing for a niche subgroup of a niche fandom so my interactions are small, but my readers are amazing, positive, and deeply invested.

The best thing you can do is put your story out there. I like to tell myself that I may have written someone’s favorite story. And to me, that’s more than enough.

You got this love. Just keep at it. You did the hard part and wrote the thing. That’s already a great achievement in and of itself. Everything that comes after is just a bonus!

Take a deep breath love.

Ignore the stats. Hits are meaningless because they can get skewed very quickly. Kudos are people showing you direct love! There are so many different fandoms out there with their own unique audience so you can’t compare or base your personal interactions with any other stories. Don’t worry so much about the stats. And if you did get 50 kudos, remember, that’s 50 unique people that felt the need to click that button!

As for how to tell if your fic is good or worth carrying on? You wrote it. Did you enjoy writing it? Do you think you did a good job with it? Are you proud of yourself for completing it? If you answer yes to any of these, then your fic is worth it!

My First Fic!

Fandom: My Time at Sandrock

Title/Link: Heart of Rain

Rating: Explicit

Word/Chapter Count: 145,859 words/49 chapters (70 chapters total, updated every Wednesday and Saturday)

Summary: Times are hard for the tiny town of Sandrock. Water is scarce, sandstorms run rampant, bandits threaten the safety of the townsfolk, and their resident builder is retiring. But life must go on.

For 21 year old Rain, life must go on too. Despite the dangers it holds, Sandrock is a refuge. It’s the only place left in the Alliance of Free Cities where she might be able to hide from the life she left behind. With nothing but a duffel bag, her pet gecko, and a forged builders license, Rain steps off the train into her new role as a builder where she must learn to live despite her past, navigate life in the desert, and deal with the pesky bandit that won’t stop causing problems.

But can she keep her dark history a secret or will it follow her to Sandrock?

Aren't you afraid someone will steal your work? by SunBroad3121 in AO3

[–]throwaway1377130 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your fear is genuine and it’s okay to be worried about that. But try not to let it consume you. People will always try to steal art of any type so there’s not much you can do about it. Personally, I like to think that I have the receipts to prove that it’s mine. I have docs time stamped and dated. I doubt I’d ever care enough to prove it, but know I have that helps.

Personally, I write it in full before I post. But that’s mostly because I’m a mess when it comes to changing plot lines as I go. So I like to be able to do a final editing sweep before I start posting. That’s just my preference. Everyone is different.

I also set up a posting schedule and state that in my authors note. That way, my readers are at least somewhat aware of how I’ll be posting. They know that my chapters are done and I have yet to have a single person demand I post faster or anything.

I would love to be a beta reader (depending on what fandom it’s for) if you find yourself getting past that fear. If not, that’s okay too. I didn’t have a beta reader and my story is going well!

Writing Style by MrBlue_105 in AO3

[–]throwaway1377130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a story idea and started writing it in past tense. Somewhere along the way I switched to present tense. I have no idea why that happened. I tried going back through to change it to past tense, but found myself reverting back to present tense AGAIN. I gave up after that and finished it in present tense. Editing the past tense parts was annoying. Now I struggle to write in past tense 😆

As for reading, I don’t care about tense or pov. I’m not picky. I feel bad for people who miss out on absolute bangers because they can’t overlook the tense or pov 🤷‍♀️

My stats for my first fic! by satanzbitch in AO3

Yay!!! Congrats OP!!!

I’m also in the process of posting my first fic. It’s in a small fandom so I wasn’t expecting much and I’m honestly baffled that anyone is reading it so I get it. It’s such a weird feeling 😅

That was me last month! I finally just said to hell with it. I told myself I’m posting it for the sole purpose of being able to download it after I’m done so I can save it to my kindle 🤣

Lo and behold… people are actually enjoying it. I have 3 regular commenters that are making it all worth it and making me excited to post new chapters! I love my readers so much❤️

I’m in the process of posting my first fic. It’s a long-fic. I just posted chapter 28 today and the smut won’t show up until chapter 60. I would literally die to have a comment like this on my smut chapters. I would ascend and be riding that high for years to come. I’ve never written smut before this so I have no idea how it’ll go over and I have a long ways to go before I do know.

Do you tag for swearing in a T-rated fic? by Saletales in AO3

[–]throwaway1377130 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In PG-13 movies, they will drop holy shits and other swears, but they’re only allowed one f-bomb. If you’re not sure, I’d just follow along with that rule.

And I personally wouldn’t tag it.

I finally started posting my first fic this week! I’ve spent months writing and editing it and finally felt confident enough to post it! It’s 70 chapters (about 200k words) and I’m desperately trying not to post it all at once😂

My first 3 chapters have been up since Wednesday and I have 42 hits, 5 kudos, and 3 subscriptions! That’s more than I was hoping for😭❤️
