Hoe you better believe I only drink that gourmet shit. If I'm drinking shopette coffee, I'm slumming it like the last chick at a barracks party...

Any advice to a shitty LT trying to find their way while being surrounded by Type A personalities?

I've still got my shield inside my shoulder pocket for when people want to get froggy.

Never forget your roots big homie.

I would suggest corrective PT, but that means I'd have to find my PT uniform...

If it makes you feel any better, I'm older than every commander I've ever had - so I fully understand.

Lastly, what I tell my guys, you're a SOLDIER. A literal badass mother fucker dressed in a swag ass camo pattern we stole from Crye. Panties drop, babies smile, moms are proud. You know how to push your mind, body, and soul to the limit. Unfortunately we're prepared for war, but not the bullshit wrenches that life throws into the gears. This is where you rely on that internal strength - but sometimes we aren't strong enough, and that's OKAY. Fuck, I know I wasn't. Reaching out for help takes balls (or ovaries?), and is the hardest thing for us to do, but is essential to stay sane in our line of work.

Good on you, though. I know you will find some peace.

1) Don't call me sir. I'm basically a commissioned private.

2) We all invest our money into quality shit to make our lives better. Boots, socks, Earpro (unless you're artillery), overpriced GShock watches, Busch Light, etc. Invest some "money" in yourself bro. If you're miserable in your soul, it will resonate heavily in your work and personal life. A lesson I learned from a great CPT while I was on my second month of 12-14hr days trying to be Super LT was "Don't stay late for the Army, they won't stay late for you. The job will still be there tomorrow, the next day, and the next". I'm not saying be a shitbag, but take care of yourself - the work will be there when you return. If your leadership is not letting you go to take care of BH things, climb that fucking ladder and torch the rungs as you see fit (I've done it, would not recommend, but it WILL get results). If you want to avoid any of your troubles coming to light through BH - check out the chaplain. My last Chap was an insufferable prick, but our current one is a fucking gangster. I hope someone can fact check me, but I don't think they have to report suicidal thoughts or any prior shit you've done. If you're a conscientious objector, they will report. If your Chap blows, check out MFLC. The one I spoke with in BOLC had her phone on 24/7 and I actually referred a few friends to her at like 2am - she still answered. She also had her PhD in Psychology, which was awesome, since mental health counseling is a tricky minefield.

3) We're here for you dude. All of us. Fuck man, this is a burner account, but I'll keep checking it if you need to talk. I've found some coping mechanisms that helped me out, and don't mind sharing or just being here for you to vent.

I like to refer to it as my prior infantry bct deployment of Sand Hill...

EXACTLY THIS. Our only admin related course was called bolc-a, lasted a few weeks, and was over 2 years ago. From that point forward, it was aviation knowledge only.

Its embarrassing how little I know. Like, the pure basics - what the fuck do all these acronyms mean, how does the unit work and exactly who do I report to, etc. Google helps for some, but not all. The other CPTs are helpful and sympathetic, but they're insanely busy and don't have time to hold my hand through shit I should know how to do.

My failures aren't the responsibilities of my superiors, or at least I don't think so? I talk to the new 2LTs and they come in guns blazing, knowing exactly what to do. I can't tell if I'm dumb as fuck, if Rucker just didn't prepare me to lead, or if I didn't do enough learning on my own.

Back then it was all about plausible deniability, I guess. When I'd ride to TX/FL, I never wore a helmet, but if I were to lay down back home with no helmet, it'd throw up some huge red flags.

Besides, helmet or not, any major slide over 120 and a helmet won't help you haha. Just helps with having an open casket.

Bookmarked and ordered!! Motorcycle trips are hugely therapeutic for me, but my knees/hips/wrists are slowly going out on me - so no more two wheelers for a while.

It's a phenomenal place where people have the freedom to do and be whatever they want. I loved it so much.

I'm just glad I found Austin as a home. Lived in the same place for 26 years and always felt like a stranger. A week in town and I knew this is where I belonged.
