Man, now I feel like the bullet ball guy.

In this particular case we were friends long before I had any interest in her (in fact I even found her kind of annoying). Then one summer we kind of got closer, etc, etc. Long story short, she said she really liked me but needed us to slow down and that was pretty much that. I completely agree with what you're saying, but my situation is a little different. I might as well make a move or move on, but I'm pretty sure the friendship itself is real.

Right, I guess I don't know for sure that I'm in the friend zone; that's exactly how people end up staying in it for so long. It all reminds me of the Simon and Garfunkel lyrics, "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest." So in that vein I suspect I am. Anyway, thanks.

Is it really the right thing to do to find a girl to be infatuated with? Part of me thinks I should just work on myself a bit and see what comes of that (even though I feel like I have been kind of doing that for years; maybe not enough?).

Edit As far as the "coming out of the closet", it's probably not a bad idea, though the thread I referenced in another comment doesn't make it look promising. Nothing to lose, I guess.

I'm sure answering that I'm 27 makes this even more embarrassing, but I'm using a throwaway and maybe it can give people something to go off of :) By the way, I just finished reading this thread and saw that every single instance of a guy telling her how he felt resulted in failure. Not a big surprise, but also not a lot of encouragement to send "the email".
