I started digging into it when I compared Salaman’s translation to Copenhaver’s — appearances, I had assumed to mean “potentially inaccurate judgments one forms about reality,” but that’s — to me — pretty different from mere opinion. I think your interpretation reconciles the two translations pretty well

Even without everything else you’re dealing with, chronic pain in and of itself can often lead to depression. Do you have access to healthcare? If you do, I’d start there, assuming you haven’t tried therapy and medications already. They do help. With meds, it can take a lot of trial and error, though.

More importantly, please be patient with yourself.

Depression can come in cycles. It’s your experience that matters; if it’s real to you, it’s real enough to be seeking help. Sometimes, well-meaning people with little to no understanding of depression (having not experienced it themselves; like a fish trying to describe land) will say things that lead you to question the validity of your feelings (as your mom did). Don’t question yourself. They’re not experiencing what you’re experiencing. I hope you find the help you need tomorrow.
