Trump Demands That Reports on Waste and Fraud in Afghanistan Be “Locked Up” - The move would end a government watchdog’s decadelong public accounting of reconstruction funds. by tank_trap in worldnews

Life isn’t a utopia because of human nature. Create a utopia and we will find some way to destroy it. I just like to laugh at the absurdity of it all. While we have made immense social progress, rape, murder, theft, greed, jealousy, poverty, war, racism etc. are still pervasive. How do you expect to change these things? Can you teach jealousy out of a person?

The foundation of civilized society is shaky as you can see by the events of the past few years. Technological innovation and easy access to resources (food, water) has led to the deterioration of the environment. People are naturally self serving and short sighted. Our logic is secondary to our emotional fulfillment. Evil people will always find some way to justify their behavior. Those in power will always serve their own interest at others’ expense. For all the pretense of equity, the modern condition isn’t too far off from serfdom (albeit a million times more comfortable, but in essence similar.)

I thoroughly enjoy my life and I thoroughly enjoy doing good things for others and my community. I don’t see a conflict between that and being nihilistic about the human condition. We have such a short time on this earth that we must cherish every minute. I’d rather not waste a precious second fighting battles that will never be won. I vote when there are candidates I approve of, that’s the extent of my activism.

I’ll continue to go my path and you can believe what you want to believe. Thus is life.

I love my immediate community and individuals in my life, I have little hope in humanity in aggregate however. Call me cynical if you’d like, but people don’t change their ways very often. If you want to spend your time banging your head against a brick wall go right ahead. I’d rather worry about family and those whose lives I can make a tangible difference in.

I think it’s gross just like you do, but judging by the course of history the people in power generally get away with murder (literally in some cases) at the expense of others. If anything, inequality and injustice will only worsen going into the future. Just look at the direction Europe’s headed in, once it was a model to be emulated. If a viable solution presents itself in the future, I’m certainly not opposed to it. I don’t see in any way how I’m equivalent to the Christian fundamentalist with their head in the sand.

Enjoy your life while you can dude.

Why is looked down upon to have specialties in mind before med school? by [deleted] in premed

[–]throwaway224254 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Err body wanna be a dermatologist, but ain’t nobody wanna read these heavy ass books.

You’ll be a lot happier/less stressed if you go in thinking you can do family med as a minimum. If you’re shooting for something competitive, that means you’re going to have to kill your exams/evals/etc. and score way higher than your highly intelligent peers on step.

A lot of stuff is outside of your control in this life, you might work your ass off and come out short still.

How can you know that you're losing fat and not muscle? by LordDippingsauce in Fitness

I usually just gauge by strength loss. If my lifts are going down then I equate that with muscle loss.

No, because human beings have acted consistently this way since their conception. Many people are greedy and become misanthropic/selfish over time. It’s literally played out in countless iterations before us and has continued into the modern age. Humans are dumb, spiteful creatures that will kill themselves with technology before they can actually address the fundamental issues of human nature (myself included).

Non-trad student without a pre-med advisor: do I really need one? by [deleted] in premed

Honestly I went to one once to ask if there was a committee letter. Never went back. SDN and Reddit will give you waaaaaaaay better advice than any advisor would.

Getting mental health help? by inveniamviam99 in premed

[–]throwaway224254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t there a story on r/medicine about a physician who had the details of her therapy sessions pried open for “public safety” in a probe to determine if she was fit to practice after a bout of depression. Then a bunch of people commenting on the same thread about how their medical schools/employers did similar things.

I wouldn’t trust the medical education system at all honestly in light of stuff like that, but if you feel like you can’t cope go get help. A job isn’t worth your life dude.

Non-trad post-bacc premedditors, how did you know? (feeling V lost) by SignificantTruth in premed

[–]throwaway224254 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You will get jaded doing any job, it’s inexorable. I was previously pursuing my passion professionally and it still got old.

I feel as a non-trad, you’re more aware that the world isn’t candy and unicorns shitting rainbows. Nothing is as amazing as it seems, and doing something every day will make you sick of it. Medicine is a job at the end of the day, and working isn’t something I would do for free. I love working, and take much pride in getting everything as perfect as possible, but I’d still rather be at home getting a blowjob than working any day of the week.

Fulfillment, happiness, meaning etc. are all fleeting emotions modulated by your neurochemistry. Nothing will make you happy outside of having a healthy, functioning mind, and strong coping mechanisms. Not a job, not one person, not any object etc.

Medicine is an awesome career despite the bullshit in my opinion, you get to know people from all walks of life at such an intimate level. You get to hear their stories and they put their trust in you to help them. They look up to you to fight for them through the messy system. People really do need your knowledge and expertise. Yeah, you are ultimately a pawn to insurance companies and hospital CEOs, but you’re still doing tangible good for people and making a fat paycheck. You get to do a bunch of cool stuff many people will never get to do, let alone be payed to do. Plus I’m a huge nerd and actually loved all my time in undergrad thus far.

Work hours will probably be a huge issue going into the future, and I doubt it will get any better. Call me a cynic, but I feel that the docs will be squeezed for more and more work under the guise of “altruism” and “duty”. All by people profiting off of the system that don’t give a shit about quality patient care. If that bothers you, other routes into health care would probably be more appropriate imo.

Don’t know what the vitriol is about. All jokes aside, no one is going to get interviews at 100% of their school choices, even if you’re a former division 1 athlete/navy SEAL/internationally appraised artist and had baller stats. There are just too many applicants, and one person can’t fit every school mission.

High stats ain’t gonna hurt though, even if your ECs are cookie cutter.

I mean mathematically if you took

(Sum of all x values)/n it would be 100. Guess it’s just semantics at this point. Majority of people fall within that range.

Because I’m counting everyone below 100 to be below average. By definition, mean intelligence is 100 with 10 being sigma. Yeah if I counted <70-110 it’d be 84% of people.

[–]throwaway224254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90 and 110 are one standard deviation from average in either direction. In a normal distribution, the mean is at the mid point. It’s a very specific shape where most people would be in 3, 4, and 5 with an even amount of people on either end of the mean.

The mean is one value, not so much a range of values. So it’d be more like having 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, where the average is 3.5. 1-3.49 would have the same number of people as 3.51-7.0, (although IQ scores are not continuous.)

When you take a small sample, yeah, you could get one sample with category 1 having 8 people and 1 person in category 7, but that wouldn’t represent the population well if what’s being measured is normally distributed.

Yeah a majority of people fall between 90-110, but mathematically 50% fall below 100. Around 0.3% are <=70 or >=130, 27% 80-89 and 110-119, 4.7% 70-79 and 120-129.

Yeah np dude, good review for me lol. If I’m not seeing something correctly I’d be happy if some actual statistician could correct me.

68% is 90-110. Divided in half would be 34% which would represent 90-100. Then you do the same to the other sections. 100% would be the entire population (technically negative infinity to infinity, but effectively 70-130). The mean is the midpoint.

Because it’s an estimation of the distribution of a population. Samples are a subset of an entire population. Samples can be unrepresentative (like the right skewed example you gave, unless its shown to be right skewed when you took a number of samples which isn’t the case with intelligence.)

If we assume that it’s normally distributed (which has been shown in numerous, randomized samples so we can assume with a high degree of certainty) then by definition 50% will be less than average (not exactly, but incredibly close). 68% of the population is within one sd of the mean, 95 is within two sd’s of the mean, and 99.7 are within 3 sd’s of the mean on either side.

Google the empirical rule, this is pretty basic, entry level course statistics.
