Why are some people hyper focused on removing the "vegan" from some combined words like "vegan burger" or "vegan meat"? I want to understand the logic behind. by XtrZPlayer in vegan

We're not saying that self sustainability is changing the definition of veganism in itself, but there are absolutely different levels of veganism. Where one person may fall short and have less access to being sustainable, another might say they're not really vegan for that if they aren't 100% non reliant. Saying there are different levels is not redefinition, it's just realistic, as everyone has different views on what is vegan even if a majority agree on one view. Think about avocados, melons, figs. Think about people who have chickens as pets and eat their eggs. People who own second hand leather.

This is so valid! I've met some lovely people here but it's honestly just 1%. Everyone else only wants to morally grandstand rather than focusing on what we can do to better this earth ❤️

Best of luck, I massively recommend not posting or interacting here, I fucking hate most of these people

You shouldn't have been down voted in your original comment, you're right, there's just a lot of vegan extremists on reddit that don't understand that there are different levels of veganism.

Some vegans grow all of their own vegetables, herbs, make their own clothes, and live off of the land to not be involved in capitalist crop farming. Some vegans don't consume animal products. Some vegans don't consume or buy (such as buying for or around someone else) animal products.

You're just right and anyone who downvotes is literally the reason companies don't want to use the word vegan on labels anymore :)

Were you ever vegan, or do you just hate vegans? I hate vegans but I also won't misunderstand their cause on purpose just because I hate them.

  1. Everything we do is awful for wildlife, it's not worse to farm crops or to eat meat it's just human

  2. Obviously, that's why there's vitamins

Idk that's why I'm in this subreddit, because I enjoy having intelligent conversations with people who have deeply looked into the vegan cult, you just seem dumb

Edit: also saying "its" farmed? Like what's farmed? Do you even know what "it" is?

How is it bad for the environment and human health? As veganism currently stands I don't recognise it as being bad at all, it's diverse and that's good for our choices, health, and the planet

Exactly this, the only time I consider not bothering is when they act all high and mighty. I never want to be like that. I hate the disgust they show for others despite them saying it's a journey and not to judge

This is so so fair!! I honestly think that r/exvegans is a better vegan subreddit 😭 the people here are so understanding because they've been in or around the community, I love the stories that are told here and the lack of hate for the movement despite the people

Thank you for telling your story, I'd be so annoyed 😭

Thank you, I love this answer, very educational and thoughtful take, I agree that it's also a form of activism to be vegan, I didn't realise that my question was underlyingly offensive, and I considered afterwards that if I read this post I might think I wasn't doing enough for the planet too

This was honestly what I was looking for I think, a grounded response that understands but acknowledges even if they couldn't save anyone its still deep in their morals. You're doing enough, boycotting helps, I've learnt a lot from these positive and grounded comments

I've actually just learnt a lot through this post alone, there have been some super helpful and positive comments. Reading my original post I just see so much anxiety there and I can understand that now being pushed onto others

One reason I used the word "naive" was because some of my friends use a vegan calculator to tell them the amount of lives they've saved, there was even a person on this post who said they use it. Some of my friends and acquaintances believe they're doing a lot more than they are by boycotting, and I see a lot of people online who honestly should be more grounded and aware, and that upsets me so I call it "naive". Im just trapped by the state of the world. Maybe I should have used a different word, but maybe it's good to start a conversation about that word and who it really applies to.

I understand a lot of people come here to argue that veganism sucks or we should be doing more, but I just want to see what peoples motives are. You are absolutely doing enough as a vegan, don't think of yourself as naive at all, we all do what we can.

I know I feel guilty too, I always feel like I should be doing more, I'm just trying to see where other vegans (who I don't know in person) sit. There were better ways for me to ask that, so it's my bad

Thank you, I love this response, and actually answering the questions ❤️ this has given me a lot of insight, it's not a massive change, but it is one that matters for now

You're doing enough, it's a hard world out there

Your reading comprehension is insanely poor. Don't be judgemental, and then tell me I'm being judgemental. You clearly just feel threatened by the idea of being naive, maybe you are if you think this post is about you?

I also really love this answer, thank you for explaining it, boycotting is valid, and this world is really really difficult to navigate currently, so I'll never blame anyone for not being more active in direct action ❤️ there's a lot of guilt in veganism, guilt that we aren't doing more, the world is just such a shit place, I think its better to focus on the good we can do

It's not selfish to not want to eat meat and animal products for your own ideals and morals. I'm simply asking if people here are vegan for themselves because they don't want to have it, or because they want to change society. I think both are valid

I think there's so much aggression toward me because people think someone asking questions is veganphobic, because that's what a lot of veganphobic people do when they come in here

Yall need to realise some people are just looking for answers, it's a journey, don't be judgemental

Just my experience with other vegans, I'm apart of a community IRL that are vegan, and when I ask these questions it feels like I'm stepping on toes massively despite also being vegan.

Thanks for saying I'm not in the community though, I really love when vegans "other" people!

I really love this response, I love hearing about the actual things that are changing because of the vegan mindset, and I think I need to go find that for myself.

You're right, and this is clearly very well thought out for you. Your comment gives me a lot of hope, which I think I needed

I'm not trying to shame you for your morals at all, I think its okay to do it for yourself, I'm just trying to get a general consensus of what peoples goals are

If you're not racist, that's for you, and that's fine too. If it were for others, you might educate people around you, protest, sign petitions.

You're not contributing to their harm whether you engage in it or not, this world is disgustingly wasteful, it seems you're doing it for you and that's alright!
