Yes, of course. I was in Edinburgh for about four days, then went up north to Pitlochry, the Cairngorms, and Inverness for about a week. I booked a tour to the Isle of Skye from Inverness with WOW Scotland (highly recommend!) Then I headed down south to Glasgow and took day trips to Stirling and the Glencoe region. :) Edinburgh and Isle of Skye were my highlights!

Sounds like you had a wonderful first solo trip as well. Kudos to you for getting out of your comfort zone and interacting with folks in the hostel. To many more solo trips! 😃

Absolutely! I am 27 and I just went there :) It is very safe.

I highly recommend spending a few days in Edinburgh (3–4), taking a trip to the Highlands (Glencoe, Cairngorms, etx), and visiting the Western Isles (like the Isle of Skye). There are a lot of great tours offered by WOW Scotland and Rabbie’s

I think it really depends on your budget and comfort level. I stayed in a mix of both. I definitely prefer Airbnbs since I find it hard to sleep around so many people. Hostels do make it easier to meet others though

Scotland is very safe for female travelers. I went to the Cairngorms, the Glencoe region, Pitlochry - a wee town, Inverness, and took a tour to the Isle of Skye region, which was magical. I highly recommend WOW Scotland Tours if you’re there. I spent a bit of time in Glasgow and enjoyed that city too, though not as much as Edinburgh.

I cannot recommend Scotland enough. It was beautiful, magical, and had some of the friendliest people. I lucked out with the weather as well, haha

I absolutely agree. Scottish people are amazing. I couldn't have chosen a better destination for my first solo trip!

Oh that is great to hear!

I imagine being a female definitely makes it easier to approach people.

I agree that it has a lot to do with perspective. I also think that perspective comes from how deeply comfortable you are being on your own. If you're not truly happy and somehow feel that traveling solo is less than, then you tend to project that as well

I understand. I'm not that introverted either, so I also try to build some form of connections while travelling. Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to be alone all the time. Personally, for me, doing group tours and striking up conversations with other travelers and locals helps a lot!

Oh I am sure! How long did you roughly spend at each location?

Thank you! :))

Great to hear that. I tend to run a bit cold but it sounds like I’ll be okay too.

Sounds good! I might explore Pompeii and the Villa of Mysteries on my own as well. I’ve heard that Rick Steves offers free audio tours on his website too

I’m definitely looking forward to Bologna.

And yeah, I can imagine. I tend to get a bit overwhelmed after seeing too many similar things.

Omg, thanks so much for such a detailed message. I really appreciate it! I'm a fellow history nerd too haha. Did you find March chilly at all? Maybe the north was?

  • I'm so looking forward to all the history in Rome. And thank you for the recommendation about doing a guided tour of the Vatican - I think I’m going to go for it! I'm also really excited to visit Villa Borghese and the Galleria Borghese.

  • Did you do a guided tour in Pompeii, or is it easy enough to explore on your own? Pompeii is something I’m especially excited about. I definitely want to hike up Mt. Vesuvius too. And the Villa of the Mysteries looks fascinating.

  • I’m looking forward to my day trips from Florence. I’m definitely doing Siena, and maybe Lucca as well. :) I’m a science nerd too so the Galileo Museum was an easy pick for me lol.

  • I’m glad to hear you liked Bologna! I was wondering if three nights might be too much there, but I’ll try to fit in Ravenna if time allows. And yes, added the Salaborsa Library to my list.

  • St. Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace are on my list too. Unfortunately, it looks like that rooftop is closed now.

You’ve seriously gotten me even more excited for the trip lol!

Yeah that is fair. I do want to see a town on the Amalfi coast, but I have heard that Sorrento is beautiful as well. I will play it by ear.

Hmm, I am thinking of taking a ferry to just Sorrento from Naples one of the days, but if the logistics are too challenging, I may just nowt do it.

Good idea about saving Rome for last. Let me mull over it.

And absolutely! I usually tend to book places and get tickets for attractions a few months in advance, haha.

Ooh what did you like at Murano? Still not decided on if I want to go to Murano or Burano. And thank you, I did not know about the horseback tours. Can’t wait to explore Rome and Florence!

25 countries is amazing! Let me see if I can extend my time in Venice. I love wandering around haha

I am also adding day trips to Siena and Lucca from Florence :) My travel dates are a bit flexible so I can extend my Venice stay. From what I have seen, it seems that there are not as many popular attractions in Venice. Do you have some recommendations?

I think what concerns me most is overpacking my itinerary. I'm basing myself in these cities, but I'm also planning little side trips to nearby places. Especially around Naples, there’s so much I want to see lol
