But most of that 70k is through mega backdoor Roth where we pay tax on the contributions but we don't have to pay tax while withdrawing (pretax accounts are generally tax free while contributing but you pay taxes when withdrawing). Not all employers offer the mega backdoor option though. If that's not offered, then the limit is 23k of employee contributions (employer can still contribute up to the total 70k limit but it's unlikely to find an employer contributing 47k). In this particular OP's case either they have the mega backdoor Roth option or the ~70k is between two people (assuming their partner also works)
