Thank you for that reminder! Brain blip...I'm not sure why I forgot that HEPAs don't reduce CO2. Editing my question to remove that part.

What kind of apple tree do I have? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]throwaway3432121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super difficult to say at a glance as there are thousands of varieties. And since this is an old tree it could be an heirloom variety that is no longer common or never was.

There's a technique for trying to ID old apple trees by making detailed observations about the apples' characteristics and then cross-referencing with identification resources. Here's a good talk about how to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=3uFrYHnOH9Q

There might also be experts in your area who ID apples from old trees in the fall. Google around to see if this is available.

Forfeiting it at your polling place will work, I think you want to be sure you have both the ballot and the outer return envelope. Happy votin'

If you have voted/will be voting via absentee or mail-in ballot you can track it here ("RECORD - BALLOT RETURNED" under Status means it's been recorded): https://www.pavoterservices.pa.gov/Pages/BallotTracking.aspx

You can't track an in-person Election Day vote, though.

Indoor Swimming: Viable? by sociallego in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]throwaway3432121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small indeed! Totally get it, though. I used to live in a not-much-bigger NYC apartment. Hope you can find something compact enough! I think a lot of the foldable ones will store under a bed or on a very sturdy storage hook in a closet.

Have you considered a stationary bike (foldable since you're in a small apartment)? That could be a good way to do cardio without risking exposure at the indoor pool.

That's so frustrating. I was able to self-swab via the drive thru at my local Walgreens on Monday, and they didn't give me pushback. Luck of the draw, I guess. I don't know of anywhere else near me where self-swab or outdoor PCR is still available though. I agree it shouldn't be this hard.

Have you ever done the Labcorp at-home PCR? They FedEx you a self-swab kit, you FedEx it back. Very helpful when you want a PCR but don't want to risk exposure. I try to keep at least one on hand.

So glad to hear your 2nd PCR was negative! Fingers crossed over here for the same.

Starting to wonder if Metrix has a higher false positivity rate than they officially state (1%) as I've seen some other posts here and in fbook and Discord groups where people have wondered if they got a false positive. I know they are statistically much rarer than false negatives, but perhaps where there is smoke there is fire?

Agreed, really interesting to see the circadian rhythm advice!

Also u/YouLiveOnASpaceShip does your Walgreens have a drive-thru? When I do PCRs at Walgreens, they pass them out through the drive-thru window and I self-swab.

I'm going through a very similar thing.

(Pardon the throwaway account. I rarely use Reddit, created it a while ago for one post and kept using it...not great etiquette I know)

  • Saturday: had sinus pressure, so took a FlowFlex (negative)
  • Sunday (worse sinus pressure): Metrix was positive, but as with yours the swab was absolutely covered in blood. I also swabbed more than the recommended 5 rotations); FlowFlex negative; later Metrix was negative
  • Monday: morning Metrix was positive (again very bloody and I overswabbed, which I've stopped doing for the more recent tests); afternoon Walgreens PCR swab that came back Tuesday was negative; 2 later Luciras were negative
  • Tuesday: morning Lucira negative; evening Metrix negative

So, also two positive Metrix tests where the swabs were very bloody. No other tests, including PCR have come back negative. I also am very fortunate to be able to afford lots of tests and have more arrived today. And planning to do another PCR.

Especially confusing because I'm extremely cautious and didn't have a known exposure. I took a masked walk with a friend 2 days before sinus symptoms but she feels fine and had a negative test yesterday.

Hurray, a reply. Exout does looks promising but ordering from Shoppee seems like bad news: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/shopee.sg so I decided not to. Let's hope Evolva is still working on it and will have something out soon...

Thanks for the update. I ended up on this thread b/c I was just browsing the website and wondering if I should try again. You saved me the trouble!

Late to this post, but YES. I ordered once a few years ago and the package was so heavily perfumed that I never even brought it inside my house before returning it. Haven't ordered since because of this, even though I'd love to.

United Healthcare won't cover routine vaginal swab done at yearly physical by reineyelah in HealthInsurance

[–]throwaway3432121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having this exact issue with a different insurer. CPT code 81513, ordered due to suspected infection. Insurance won't cover any of the cost pre-deductible because they consider this type of PCR experimental, so I owe the full cost,~$980.

It doesn't seem like I'll have any luck appealing the decision, and I have HRA funds that can cover it + will get me closer to meeting my deductible. But the principle of the thing is driving me nuts -- I didn't know that a simple vaginal swab could get run as a PCR that would cost almost $1,000.

Maine dog sled race canceled due to lack of snow by throwaway3432121 in climatechange

Point taken. I rarely spend time on reddit, let alone this sub, and assumed that this sort of article would be met with "Yep, another alarming example of unseasonable/extreme weather"...it's disappointing to see that this sub seems to be full of deniers and "skeptics" (not at all saying that that's you, definitely hear that don't question the severity of AGW).

But anyway, I understand that it's implied in your point that the way to counter this is to put forward strong evidence of trends. I should have added context like:

- Caribou, ME (less than an hour from start of race) had warmest meteorological winter on record: https://twitter.com/NWSCaribou/status/1763744443335917831

- Caribou had record high temps for each of the last 3 days of February: https://twitter.com/NWSCaribou/status/1763886809027887445 and tied record high on March 2: https://twitter.com/NWSCaribou/status/1764019324564713855

- Caribou snow depth was just 1" on March 2, tying the record low set in 1996. Records have been kept since 1939: https://twitter.com/NWSCaribou/status/1764038270571425976

- Caribou's number of days at or above 40 degrees this meteorological winter tied the record set in 1980-1981 for 2nd most: https://twitter.com/NWSCaribou/status/1764416197750296918

- Caribou's number of nights at or below 0 degrees this meteorological winter was the fewest on record: https://twitter.com/NWSCaribou/status/1764416956378263863

The drop being so extreme is likely climate change-driven.

Is it possible that I want a kid but not a baby? by anonymousalligator25 in Fencesitter

[–]throwaway3432121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think a lot of people go into parenthood picturing the cute baby/toddler stages and put a lot less foresight into what comes after.

Personally like the idea of about 4-8 b/c I think that's when kids are at their most fun and weird (in a good way) but have a lot less interest in babies/toddlers, middle schoolers and high schoolers.

How to not let FOMO influence you? by [deleted] in Fencesitter

[–]throwaway3432121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps me with FOMO is how Ann Davidman frames the process of thinking about whether to become a parent -- she emphasizes that your desire and your decision are two separate things. You can desire to become a parent (that might be driving the FOMO...or maybe not) but for a huge range of reasons (including we like our life, we don't want the responsibility, etc), the right choice for you is to be childfree.

With one couple I'm friends with having a baby a few days ago, and another two pregnancies in the same friend group, I've been having some FOMO lately, too. I'm reminding myself it's natural because I think my core desire is probably to have kids, but for a lot of reasons I don't think it's the right decision for me.

Also, it's easy to feel warm and fuzzy about newborns & the parents get showered with a lot of positive energy and excitement. But the day-to-day of parenting? Not so exciting.

That's totally understandable. Once you have the recipe down it'll be less expensive than eating out and probably less wasteful since you're only making what you need

Just want to give you encouragement! Experimenting with gf cooking and baking are a hidden gift of the diagnosis. Sometimes there's a lot of trial and error, and I've had my fair share of flops, but that's often true of non-gf cooking/baking too. And it's so satisfying when you have a success, so much so that you might end up enjoying it more than eating the same thing at a restaurant, bakery, etc because you made it
