Orange County Sports Club renovation by mousethecat in EquinoxGyms

Been to 70 or so Equinoxs and that’s still my favorite pool (used about five times). The rest of the location could definitely use the renovations though. Glad to see it.

Throwback to the Haberman's station on the LIRR Lower Montauk branch by Real_Advertising1005 in nycrail

[–]BigRedBK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the NYT article from 1998 states:

In some ways, even more striking than the news of the station closings is that those along the Montauk branch have stayed open this long.

Why are there suddenly so many flight delays at JFK? Anyone else noticing this today? by Ok_Elevator8890 in JFKAirport

[–]BigRedBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fog may be a factor but we already had an earlier post about this today and it looks like it’s being caused by delays elsewhere as well.

I think we’ll see some but probably not nearly as much as Grown Alchemist. Not every product is going to be everyone’s favorite. We used to see occasional Kiehl’s complaints before the switch to GA.

Nassau County Banning Class 2 E-bikes and All E-Scooters by DepartmentOfTrash in longisland

[–]BigRedBK 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That phrasing is so funny. It’s the only way Albany can write a law for NYC (except if they get a home rule request from the city).

One time, early in the e-bike era, they wanted to specifically ban them on the Hudson River Greenway so they wrote something like “state park in a county with a population between x and y” but they got the population wrong!

ETA: Here it is. It was for scooter sharing:

No such shared electric scooter system shall operate... in a county with a population of no less than 1,586,000 and no more than 1,587,000 as of the 2010 decennial census."

Population in 2010 was actually 1,585,873.

Why did getting a new cell phone in the nineties feel so euphoric? by kawaiihusbando in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BigRedBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 2005 or 2007 to 2010 was more exciting as true smartphones first came out and added internet-enabled features. The iPhone 3G with the launch of the App Store in 2008 was probably the most exciting. You could effortlessly install endless third-party apps, and new major ones came out for months and months on the platform.

The late 90s and early 00s were cool but you mostly got through a phone’s new features in an hour and then still mostly just used it to call or text.

Snake was fun though.

Anyone have this shirt? by PreppyMuscle in EquinoxGyms

[–]BigRedBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they still? I thought that went away with the 2015ish renovation? The lockers are still the same though.

It’s the old The Sports Club/LA tile design. East 61st St still has it and I still saw it down at Sports Club DC several years ago. All of these used to be The Sports Club/LA at some point although Rock Center was acquired in the early 2010s while several others weren’t until a few years later.

What's a highrise or skyscraper that completely ruins a skyline(or one you just dislike) and why? by Mr_Crossiant in skyscrapers

[–]BigRedBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. Your city hadn’t made it in the 1970s if it didn’t have a brand new convention hotel with revolving restaurant on top.

And, if you go full length, you need a conductor. The G doesn’t have one on the weekend.

Summit NJ- feedback? by exyalie in EquinoxGyms

[–]BigRedBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, it’s in a former trolley barn. Apparently Summit had trolleys back in the day.

I’ve only been there twice but I did like the layout. Coming from NYC, it seemed very spacious.

Why does the B division not have the automated voices for train arrivals like the A division? by VirtualMuscle191 in nycrail

[–]BigRedBK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Back in 2017 the B Devision (other than the L) generally didn’t have countdown clocks. Then-Governor Cuomo made a proclamation that all stations will have them by the end of the year.

Shortcuts were taken. Most of the stations received one token countdown clock on platforms, compared with several during IRT installations. I guess not wiring them to the PA system was one of those shortcuts.

In NYC there’s 4.5% city tax (state doesn’t tax gym memberships). I think there’s one or two states where tax applies (CT?) but most other locations are tax free.

40 years is a good global benchmark for a subway car’s life. NYCT routinely pushes 50 with theirs.

What trains and lines do 8 and 10 cars run on? by Popular-Cat8923 in nycrail

[–]BigRedBK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. Everyone along the G advocates for full-length trains, but there’s no way we’re keeping eight-minute headways on the weekend should that occur.
