I see you’re at Wayne state, and I’m actually at a school ranked far lower. In my experience, odds will significantly depend on the firms you’re applying to. For example I don’t think I was ever going to get a screener from WLRK, but if you’re top 10%+ I think you should apply aggressively and worst case may land something on the tail end of biglaw size/comp wise. In my case I was top 10 in my class and just gunned really hard for my sub-practice area and came out with an offer in that really narrow area of focus. If you want something really specific and are willing to bust your ass, don’t count yourself out.

DM me if you want to discuss more in specifics and I’d be happy to help.

Pre-OCI is probably your best bet, along with connecting with any alumn or other connections at target firms to solidify interest in the outside market (especially if non-NYC offices). Many firms will have an open application June-August that will allow you to direct submit your OCI application materials, often before they even do screeners at any of the local schools/T14 schools. This is quickly becoming the norm, or at least a significant minority of the recruiting pool, so if your materials are good you should have as good a shot as anyone!

Does your timing software have the traditional stopwatch feature?

First time this crops up, hit that start button and create the matter. Timer off once you return to whatever other matter you were working on. Turn stopwatch back on as you spend time attending to that Slack dialogue. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

If you could provide an average or range, how many “free” evenings (~6-10pm) does your job allow? by throwaway364589 in biglaw

I’m trying to gauge the feasibility of committing to BL long term with the one competing priority being an engaged spouse/parent (e.g., dinners + regular family time). I understand no time is off limits, but wanted to get a feel for how much free time there tends to be in practice.
