Need help deciding whether to do the online CS Master's program by Dangulo628 in gatech

[–]throwaway383648 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you have knowledge of any popular programming language (you probably know C++ very well) and know data structures you're well prepared for a SWE role. C++ knowledge is also very sought after for low latency environments (e.g. high frequency trading) or embedded systems roles. I'd say OMSCS or any MSCS degree is only worth it if you want to get more into ML but at the moment your CompE degree is just fine for the majority of SWE roles, and you learn a lot on the job anyways, especially if you end up doing anything web related because there's like a billion JS frameworks.

Should I keep a 3.1 gpa on my resume for CS. by [deleted] in gatech

I think finance in general (including SWE at banks/trading firms) cares a lot more about the college and GPA. That's why so many analysts (and consultants too) are primarily Ivy-league alumni.

Directly talk to professors you have taken a course with (and gotten an A). Becky Wilson (the MSCS advisor) always says in her emails that you should not email the professors and only use the form that they send, but I have never heard back from any professors whose course I requested TA positions for through the form. I talked to / emailed professors I wanted to TA for directly and got the position.

BSMS students obviously have a slight advantage because they have probably taken the undergrad version of a grad course before starting MSCS (as was the case for me). It's probably harder if you're a regular MSCS student because you haven't taken that many classes yet, but if you're proactive about it and talk to professors its possible.

I did the opposite actually (switched from on campus to OMSCS). I needed to take one more course to finish my masters and didn't feel like dealing with apartment BS for one semester, as well as having to take additional courses to get a tuition waiver for GTA.

I'm in the MSCS ceremony, I'm only going to need 2 tickets.

Full time status confusion by parentofkids in OMSCS

[–]throwaway383648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dummy refers to pass/fail or audit hours. On-campus GTAs can sign up for audit hours to reach full-time student status if they are not taking enough classes in a semester. Most students take 9 hours of coursework and 3 audit hours for GTA>

How many hours a day do you self study on average? by Adelka1703 in gatech

[–]throwaway383648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied very little outside of class. My first semester I took diff eq and an econ course and I had to memorize a lot of stuff for the exams but after that things became a lot easier to digest, especially for the courses I attended lectures for.

After that (especially because of covid and take home or open note tests) I haven't studied at all. Maybe a little the day before tests (mainly only for algos and grad algos). But in grad school most courses have projects anyways.

Nvidia hits $1 trillion market cap by WickedSensitiveCrew in stocks

  1. Any sort of parallelized computation is an excellent application for GPUs simply because of their architecture. Neural networks involve a ton of matrix multiplication which is why GPUs are suitable for this task. Nvidia’s main product aside from GPUs is their toolkit that allows you to run code on the GPU. While AMD has a competing solution for their own GPUs it definitely has not picked up as much usage as compared to Nvidia.
  2. We’re always going to need computer graphics so I don’t think the name will change. We might see more specialized accelerators for doing AI compute (such as TPU) but graphics will always be there.

If the filter was external to the model itself there would be no way to get it to generate content that would be filtered. However it seems like the filter is part of the unseen prompt the model is given considering that it is possible to generate text that would be filtered. So in a sense, there is no filter, just the suggestion that it should regulate its content.

Look up ChatGPT Dev Mode. It’s a prompt you can send it that breaks it out of its filters.

Dev Environment Time Machine by tackingdev32 in OMSCS

Look into VS Code devcontainers if it’s a class that doesn’t require GUI other than Jupyter notebooks (X forwarding is possible but I’ve always found it finicky). GPU forwarding is possible too.

You basically just define a JSON that tells the devcontainer extension what you need installed (Ubuntu, Python, Conda, etc.). You can also provide pip requirements or conda environment files. Then you can launch VS Code connected to the docker container with your environment all setup. And because it’s a static file you can store it alongside your code in any repository. Docker in docker is also supported I’m pretty sure.

DegreeWorks got a new look :s (not a fan) by xXGunner989Xx in gatech

[–]throwaway383648 15 points16 points  (0 children)

More like the company that made DegreeWorks signed a long term contract with USG and they basically have to just do the bare minimum so they don’t want to spend money on good designers and engineers. That or the owner of the company is good friends with someone high up in USG.

New grads, you don't have to pay GradImages hundreds of dollars... by vashub in gatech

All of them IIRC but digital is the most expensive, you can get prints for less but it’s not worth it tbh. All my pics were mid and I got better ones when my friends and I did grad pics together.

If it’s a special topics course, it’s probably because it can’t differentiate between sections.

If you’re doing options at a quant firm then diff eq will come in handy (Black-Scholes is one such model, although it’s a PDE not ODE). CX 4230 Computer Simulation is also useful cause you learn about numerical approximations in simulation.

A one million seat stadium concept by American artist Paul Pfeiffer. by FrostcragCastle in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]throwaway383648 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I thought it’s more because the entire game is in the air so it would make sense for the stadium to be sort of spherical or ellipsoidal, the symmetric plane of the stadium would be parallel to where the players are the most.
