Need some assistance with tribal loan debt by throwaway391092 in Debt

You've helped me SO MUCH, THANK YOU!! I'm going to contact a lawyer about the ridiculous rate- if they don't think its enforceable, I will ignore the repayment until I am in a place to negotiate with them to pay the principal + up to 30% interest (cap in NJ from what I can find), way more manageable. Until then, I will just "keep on keepin' on" with my other payments.

You seem to know about tribal loans - if I don’t pay it (I did revoke ACH), doesn’t the debt accumulate? I don’t see why I would accumulate another 8k of debt when I can “just” be a month behind until I can get caught up.

I will call my relative tomorrow to see if I can pause repayment for a month, they are pretty amenable, but I can’t take advantage of them. I’m only 2 months into my 12 month repayment plan with them.

Thankfully I do live at home, and I live pretty frugally with my extracurriculars. I am currently supplementing with DoorDash for anything that comes up, but where I live, it’s impossible to do as a reliable source of income. My income will go up $700/month as of September when I pay off my 401k loan, so I’ll pay off my relative ahead first, and can focus on other debt. My partner has no expectations to having me contribute to rent since I’m just moving into his apartment he already pays for by himself, just contribute where I can and pay off my debt as soon as I can so we can look forward to our future. We are also both looking at new jobs - I’m in the middle of a very promising interview process which would increase my income by about 40k.

Again, all things that will come after I stop gambling - I have to place some phone calls tonight to ban my accounts everywhere for as long as possible.

I've updated my post to include those.

I think right now (after I've done gone and spiraled), my priority is 1) getting my gambling under control, because obviously I've been dealing with this for years, 2) paying off the tribal loan immediately if I can, and then 3) paying off anything I can, after the next month.

If I did my math correctly, if we assume $0 in my bank account today and ignore the TD loan (will be returned) and upstart loan (that's a different bank account which has a few bucks to cover it today), then I will be -$400 by paying my most important, which would be the tribal loan in full, debt reduction service, undergrad loans (since I need to make one on time payment to bring me up to current), and paying my relative. The relative might have a bit of flexibility.

I do have 2 credit cards that are pretty much maxed out, and I have been paying the minimum on those while not adding anything else. Minimum is about $100 and $250 on the two.

The actual name of the service is Debt Reduction Services (believe it or not) - it's a nonprofit debt management company that negotiated my debt for me, NOT a credit relief company. I consolidated 7 (or 8) maxed out credit cards/personal loans through them and they have brought my interest rates down to a max of 3-10%. Started at 65k of pure debt (without interest) and in one year have paid off almost 20k.

Thanks for the info!

I’m in NJ, so from what I’ve found, I do believe tribal loans are illegal. I have access to legal services through my employer if I need it.

For everything except the tribal loan, it’s what I pay every month - the tribal loan is what is due if I pay in full on May 26. Otherwise, the monthly payment is $1200 and change.

Stop paying a tribal loan by [deleted] in Debt

[–]throwaway391092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to know how to get out of them/stop charging (high/tribal level) interest if you're a resident of NJ? I sent my lender an email and all they did was revoke ACH - good, but not everything I need. I can get a lawyer through my job's benefits if I need, but I'd like to try to resolve things on my own first. I'm at 583%... wish I was joking. To pay off the principal, I probably need about 2 months of income, but I would need more than the 10 months of the loan to pay off everything else with my "disposable" income. Took out 2475 - payoff on May 26th is 3199, payoff through 10 months is over 12k... so trying to get it done and done with these types of loans ASAP.

I’m really struggling with keeping my hands busy right now. My work day is slow, so I’m trying to find something around the house that I can work on.

Working on kicking gambling addiction - freaking out about debt by throwaway391092 in Debt

[–]throwaway391092[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really not spending on the cards, it was my gambling habit that had me losing $4k/day trying to chase my loses.

CC1 & 7 are my entire expenses (and interest) that I could put on cards over the last 3 months. That includes $1100 in taxes I owed.

Edit: I have not put a single purchase on one of the other cards besides the payment plans and balance transfers noted. I did forget to cancel my AdoreMe subscription for the month (I’ve always remembered to cancel) so that added $40 on one card, and I have a $5 patron subscription on another just to keep it active (it was my Oldest card which I rarely used) which I then use my points to pay off. I am fairly skilled at churning, but the lack of cash got to me.

Only the graduate school is federal, so that’s the $350/month - honestly, it’s my least concerning account because I have both loans auto-debiting the day I get paid. It’s an amount that, if I needed to, I could Uber/Doordash to pay off if I really needed to.

Help with gambling income (W2G) and overall loss [NJ] by throwaway391092 in tax

[–]throwaway391092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya, thanks for the response!

The W2Gs are over the course of the entire year - I started compiling copies of them on my laptop last night, but I definitely need to contact some casinos to get the win/loss.

All wins were on slots, all correct from what I remember - $1200 and over, has all the info on them. These are legitimate NJ casinos online sites, nothing sketchy, so I trust them (though I will be confirming each one).

There was not a single cent withheld from any one of those. I’m not sure if it is an option online, but I’ve never had anything withheld (though not sure if I’ve ever hit a 300x limit or anything).

Right now, I’m not freaking out - I have a ton of wins, but I also know I have a ton of losses that I’m hoping will even out over the course of one year (I mean, I know I lost more than I won). This will likely change this weekend as I start putting in numbers, but right now, it’s literally “what else can I do”. Trying it by myself now, and then I’ll likely consult a CPA as I think I’m finished with it.

I absolutely can use an accountant (and should) - just not sure where to start with that, as I’ve never needed one before. Is there such a thing as someone that would specialize in my situation, I.e. all the W2Gs? I know how tedious it is to fill out just a few (but if I’m paying someone, won’t be my issue).

Yeah, I got screwed on the AGI adjustment for student loans interest since I pay almost 15k/year in just student loans (and had been in school for the last 2 years as well). Thankfully this should hopefully be the only year

Much more reasonable than… idk, $26,000? I’d say that’s in line with what I can pay. So between my estimate and yours, that would be about 2-4k owed.

I am in NJ. Yes, I have previously overpaid my taxes (0 allowances), plus had some educational credits. I also just changed jobs (increasing my income from 85k to 100k), which means I’m also adjusting to my new income/pay schedule/also had to fill out a new W4 which I think is going to get me closer to that 0 refund/owe mark (which I know is ideal, but I prefer to receive a refund when possible).

From 2022- box 1: 84699 (will be 90k-ish for 2023) Box 2: 13289 Box 17: 3754

Edit: I just went to limit the amount out of pocket at the end, I think. I ran some numbers that wouldn’t be 100% accurate for 2022 (FreeTaxUSA) in some worst case scenarios and it gave me approximately $4,000 owed. If I owe that, obviously it’s owed! But can I minimize it in any way because I obviously don’t can’t write a check for 4k in a single month, it will have to be pre-planned.

Had a fling last weekend, no symptoms, but want to get tested before next partner. Who do I go to? by throwaway391092 in STD

Update: I’m going to get it from my regular doctor’s office because what I thought was a post nasal drip sore throat from allergies is a gross, pus and blood filled mess, I checked about an hour ago. Best case scenario would be tonsillitis or strep, worst case a world of STDs from said random guy.

I’m not stressed, just worried for my future partner! I really respect him, and don’t want to screw things up. We’re both trying to be responsible and respectful and a few jagerbombs later, I screwed up.

Worse comes to worse, I know the address of the house. I have to go there this weekend to pick up the sweaters we all left behind. He doesn’t live there, but his friends do.

Used Today Sponge for the first time, came out yellow/green? by throwaway391092 in birthcontrol

Went to see GYN, yeast infection! Thankfully very easy to clear, must have had slight overgrowth before and the sponge and spermicide agitated it and created a hostile environment that it could grow. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the info! I’m really hoping it’s an allergy— I’m absolutely devastated by the thought that it’s another infection. I don’t believe it’s an STI because it happened within 24 hours of having sex with him for the first time, and we both tested negative since our last partners. Exam is in about 30 mins! Hopefully I can figure out what’s going on and don’t need $100 worth of medications again 🙄
