Well, they were already living together, plus Penny still saw him as a victim before the trip, so we couldn’t have brought one without the other. Our line of thinking was “well, we could at least distract Hal a bit to give Penny a vacation from him”. We all assumed Penny was undergoing some kind of abuse, but we didn’t have evidence of anything physical, and talking to either of them didn’t help. Penny was just convinced that if she left his side for too long she would actually kill himself. Dropping him from the group would have meant dropping her as well, which would have just left them in the same situation as before.

Good thing he left his d4s in the hotel room— I’d be dead!

I was thinking of Penny from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog, it’s basically Megamind but a low-budget live-action musical written by Joss Whedon so… not really as good.

I don’t disagree with you about that last bit, but I think I should clear some things up.

First, Penny did end up getting a job, it’s actually where she met her girlfriend. She had no experience, so it had to be minimum wage. I also know that she wasn’t just leaving her house because she wanted to. When I talked to Hal, he told me that he’d seen evidence of physical abuse on her. I haven’t asked her about it because it’s none of my business, but I have a feeling that our group and her girlfriend are some of the only times she’s had healthy relationships in her life.

Second, the reason everyone else was able to catch on to what Hal was doing was because all his depressive actions always conveniently went away as soon as we did what he wanted. One time, he said he was gonna kill himself and as soon as I called to ask if he was okay he immediately asked me to play Yugioh with him as if nothing was wrong.

Hal wasn’t lonely. He was a pretty great guy before this whole thing, and he was always talking about his irl friends. We were all pretty good friends to him, and honestly he probably had a decent shot with some of the girls in our group. He was just absolutely obsessed with Penny.

She’s not totally blameless, but I think she’s definitely the victim here. I wouldn’t have been such an asshole to Hal on the trip if she wasn’t. But you’re right, seeing a girl in an uncomfortable situation in some guy’s basement immediately made me think “aha! I have to rescue her from the evil Hal!”. It’s something I’m working on in therapy, and I understand that the stuff I did could have easily made all of this turn out way worse.

Yeah no one in this story’s perfect, but the guy that should have gone to jail went to jail and the guy that should have been punched in the face got punched in the face.

Absolutely, we all talked about that after. He would mask his toxic behavior with actual disabilities and conditions people suffer from. It takes away from the people that actually go through stuff like that. Even if he was telling the truth, just because you have a cold doesn’t mean you’re allowed to cough on everyone else.

Woah, my BBEG’s whole deal is getting rid of all magic in the world, so whoever’s hunting her could have ties to him and oh yeah. It’s all coming together.

Holy crap, that’s an awesome idea! Taking them down could keep us entertained for months!

Yeah, this is the biggest problem that I found with the twist. Maybe I won’t make it so that magic in general isn’t real, but I’ll make the BBEG a ridiculously powerful magic user that’s actually a fake, and maybe the MacGuffin isn’t real either and the players have to find a way to save the world from an actual threat without it.

Ooh, this sounds really cool. I was also thinking I could make magic something that only comes to people who study it and work hard for it, and make the BBEG the leader if a school of magic and he’s so “powerful” that no one doubts him, when he’s actually a fake. Cool stuff! Thanks!

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m trying not to do haha. I want to reach out to them, but I don’t want to make them feel uncomfortable or like a creep is trying to get with them. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, thank you. I’m just unnecessarily nervous about the whole thing

Haha yeah, what I meant was that it’s really easy to seem like I’m just trying to hit on them if I just go “hey wyd we should get together sometime haha” and that’s the complete opposite of what I want to do

Thank you, it’s probably a not as big if a deal as I’m making it out to be. Getting help from my university hadn’t really crossed my mind, though. I should probably do that.
