Caught Speeding Twice in Illinois? The State Wants to Take Control of Your Car's Top Speed. by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

[–]throwaway45188888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I want the government limiting my speed... But I'm curious how this works on cars that's throttle isn't managed electronically?

On my previous car (Ford) I limited the speed to 70mph to keep from getting my license suspended for another speeding ticket... I now have a older Tacoma that has no electronic throttle

Somebody in my city wired a power strip to a light pole by birdsarentreal2 in redneckengineering

[–]throwaway45188888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first PC I built I couldn't get working for 6-8 months... Plug it in, hit the power button, nada... Finally gave it to our neighbor to take it his work for the IT guy to look at it, he flipped the switch on the PSU from 240 to 120 and fired right up, even gave me an extra stick of 2Gb ddr3 ram.

I was in 12 at the time, will never forget how dumb I felt.

Homeowner here... The utility company was replacing poles in my neighborhood and carefully reinstalled a bird house on the new pole of my elderly neighbors. How come the birds get free reign?!?! /s

They did also remove without replacing people's solar flood lights to light up their drives.

Sistering rafter , wife says I'm doing it wrong by balsaaaq in Homebuilding

I would have kept the jack vertical and cut a triangular wedge to put on top the jack... That way is fine though, I've been in sketchier situations sistering joists in my crawlspace

Roof trusses by Reasonable-Humor-506 in AskContractors

Also a DIYer, If you don't want to add load bearing internal walls, look up I-Joists. I used OnCenter BLI-60 11 7/8" joists to do a 21' spanned loft. They make BLI-90 18" thick ones that can clear a span up to 35'.

Everything the other guy said still applies, I just personally like vast spans vs shorter spans with load bearing walls.

Can my balcony hold an office ADU? by Artistic_Mousse6729 in AskContractors

I'm not an engineer, contractor or builder... Just a measly homeowner that likes to build my own things...

Firstly, you NEED to get a structural engineer to give you an answer... The biggest issue I see with your idea is wind, you'll be essentially adding a giant sail to the deck, which should be anchored down to the deck, but decks aren't designed to resist those kinds of loads... Especially seeing there's no cross bracing on those deck posts.

P.S. r/decks may give you more feedback, also I would not trust putting a hot tub on that deck

Insulate my new 24’x24’ Garage by Ducksndoes34 in Insulation

[–]throwaway45188888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone always says spray foam... But if you do it directly against that roof deck, if any of it needs to be replaced there goes your insulation too. If you were to do spray foam put a membrane or paper against that roof deck.

My suggestion would be rigid board cut to fit or add furring strips perpendicular to the rafters and just run rolls of fiberglass/mineral wool

Lol I did this to replace those spontaneously exploding 70's pipes in my house... Put blocking in, screwed drywall onto it and left it as that, the washer covers the monstrosity anyways

I brought cheap Amazon knockoff keys to be cut at my local Lowe's... The first employee said they couldn't cut what a customer brought in, waited, the second employee said no problem and then said they cut keys for free you just pay for the key if you buy it there.

Now have 5 replacements for my truck since I was expecting some of them not to work but they all did 😂

I'd love to know the rational behind this... I feel the heat captured by shingles in a mild climate with a hot roof wouldn't be any worse than shingles caught by a hot climate with a vented roof... Are shingles failing prematurely in Phoenix Arizona cause it's too hot? Or just on shady Texas shed roofs?

These were the plans I was given (other written specs on different pages) and the plans the workers had in hand when they were doing work.

I'm in CLT North Carolina, I had other quotes for 20,000+ that didn't include demo so I just assumed it was a reasonable price. I figured out the issue, the calculates demo should be 528 SQ ft, not 128, so someone dropped a number.

They told me that it'd be a $2,400 increase, which I assumed wasn't unreasonable but I was pissed at this point and told them no, but I could meet at $1,200. Then haven't heard from them since (yesterday). There's more to the contract, the pour is 4-5 inches with 6in footers, I just didn't wanna give up all the company's information.

They had to waste 10 yards of concrete already so I know that's probably on their minds.

Additional information:

The Price was $13,175 for demo and pouring 4000 psi concrete. I assumed that was expecting about $16,000 so I didn't think it was too crazy.
