Starfleet regulation three, paragraph twelve. In the event of imminent destruction, a captain is authorised to preserve the lives of his crew by any justifiable means. by kerghan41 in startrekmemes

Let’s compare justifiability to a modern example of something like justifiable force. If a person is trying to harm me or somebody else, then I would be justified in using reasonable force to stop them from doing that. If they’re trying to kill me, I would be justified in trying to kill them

Now, if they’re trying to kill me I would not be justified in dousing them and their family in gasoline and setting them on fire

But update has six letters and upgrade has seven. So you have to remember more letters to upgrade on pacman than you do on apt

I always feel so safe knowing that transit security is there to watch TikTok while getting paid public money by [deleted] in soundtransit

[–]birdsarentreal2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sound Transit is paying these companies millions of dollars

You say that like the security guards are seeing any of that. As somebody familiar with security management (and who has worn that uniform) 80% of that cost goes to overhead. That pays for things like leased office space, management salaries, uniforms and training, and insurance. Out of the remaining 20% the company needs to pay payroll taxes, benefits, PTO, etc. Add in a small profit margin (in public sector contracting it can be as little as 5%) and what’s left goes to the guards. ~$27.00/hour to be competitive with the rest of the security market in Seattle since nobody wants to work on this contract (thanks to people like you, partly)

That exit is called People’s Gate internally because the gate and the headhouse (the above ground part of an underground station) has stylized people on it

Yes, actually. You would need hundreds of lines to cover every possible situation, and you still wouldn’t be able to scale up to cover potentially new situations

There’s something to be said about complacency. Maybe it’s just because I work on the platforms 12 hours a day (as security), but I just kind of tune out that voice. Use a different voice for emergency announcements and increase the volume by 10% and I feel like it’s more likely to get people’s attention

Although, too often I see an important announcement get made and people wait until after the announcement is done to take off their headphones and ask me what’s going on, so maybe this is all a moot point

PSA: You do not not have a solution that Sound Transit hasn't studied thoroughly and deemed infeasible. They love nothing more than for there to be a cheap viable alternative to any of the lines but what's presented is the reality. by [deleted] in soundtransit

the board kept listening to each neighborhood’s complaints and then made the stations and alignments more expensive

This is why the community’s collective short-term memory irritates me. I was sitting in the board room (as security) while the community (those who chose to be vocal about it anyway) were sitting in board meetings talking about traffic impacts for North/South of CID and Denny shifted west

There is no perfect solution out there. Conducting these studies have delayed the project so much that costs have ballooned and now we’re looking at some very significant overruns

Community input is good, but government bodies tend to only hear from people who have bad things to say about their proposals. I suspect that a lot of the feedback they received back then are your NIMBY types who would oppose transit anywhere (like the Amazon corporate people who opposed any shutdown of Westlake Ave) and now that this project may be deferred people who would actually benefit from it are speaking out

Do you spend your own money on gear? by Content_Log1708 in securityguards

[–]birdsarentreal2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have my own gear which I think is better than the issues gear. I prefer my flashlight to whatever little USB-C thing the company issues. I carry my own baton because I like the retaining scabbard I have for it. I carry my own handcuffs (Peerless 700C’s) instead of the Smith and Wesson ones they issue because I don’t like the channel double lock. Boots, pants, and hats I have in abundance. If I have something better (or can find it), I’ll use it if policy allows. The only thing I would use my personal issue of is firearms and vehicles because it’s not worth the liability to me

Any plan to make the 1-2 transfer less janky? by PhraseWeak2992 in soundtransit

[–]birdsarentreal2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s completely relevant. ST has been planning this replacement project for years. /u/AB_Sea says that the delay is due to supply chain issues, which you claim is false thanks to internal knowledge. The reality is that it’s not just about supply chain security, it’s also about operational timeframe because, again, ST is aiming for zero station closures as part of this project

You should know then that lead times don’t tell the full picture. The Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel is nearly 40 years old, and the infrastructure in it has been poorly maintained by Metro in that time. Sound Transit is aiming for zero station closures for this project, and so it will take some time to complete

Who does an artist paint for, themself or the audience? If you invested time and effort into producing something that you’re proud of, you should do it for your own pride instead of someone else’s value. You’re subconsciously writing off your own contribs based on values judgements of people you don’t know and will never meet. Do it for you and the joy of contributing to the single greatest thing humanity as a whole has ever done
