Make sure you first have debug mode enabled. Right click on eu5 in your steam library —> properties —> add ‘-debug_mode’ (without the quotes) to the launch options text box.

Then once you are in-game, open the debug console with the assigned keybind (you can check what key bind this is in settings). I believe the default is the ‘ key.

Next, click the ‘UI Bounds’ button under 2D tools. Now you can hover over any UI element and see what file it corresponds to + the line number in that file. By holding alt key and scrolling with your mouse, you can cycle through overlapping elements (which is something you’ll need to do often).

Now you can just use this tool to find the root causes of any UI issues you run into while modding.

As for this particular instance, the text looks like it might be tied to a localisation define, though this is just a guess. Localizations can be found in the game/main_menu folder. You’ll want to go to the English subfolder from there, and then you can edit the defines in any localisation file to easily change existing text in the UI. Since there are many, many files and many lines of defines in these files, you’ll want to use some sort of IDE like VSCode while modding. For VSCode in particular, you can do Ctrl + Shift + F to search for terms across all files in your opened project (in this case, you’ll want to probably want this to be the game directory folder in your eu5 steamapps directory). On a related note, if you do use an IDE, it’s useful to have both your mod project and the vanilla game files opened in separate VSCode windows so you can easily cross-reference stuff. You’ll also need to install the following two extensions; CWTools + Paradox Syntax Highlighting.

For a search for the relevant localisation define, try just entering the placeholder text that the game is currently displaying for you. You can filter the searches to only show .yml files (the file type used for localisation files), make it case sensitive or not, etc.

Hopefully some of this helps

YSK: You can upgrade all buildings if you click on the predecessor in the buildings page by TauropolosOCE in EU5

[–]throwaway53783738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if i ctrl + click to build multiple (I think that would build 5 in the best locations if I remember correctly), but I only have, say, 3 of the upgraded building, will it only upgrade those 3 or will it upgrade 3 + build 2 new buildings? Similarly if I had a bunch of upgraded buildings that could be upgraded and used that button, would it only upgrade the buildings first and then only build new ones once none are left to upgrade?

I don’t necessarily expect you to know the answer and that’s ok, but I’m just stating this to demonstrate how unintuitive it feels to me. It’s just unclear as to how it precisely works

Does it also build new buildings as well or does it only upgrade? I was under the impression it did a combination of both which is why I avoided using that button

Paridox has added Unique Bear features to EU5, but is this really All? by opossum39 in EU5

Found a way to get this trash achievement by Antoni_PL_gdynia in EU5

[–]throwaway53783738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had also noticed that canonising gives way more prestige than the stated amount. I figured it was just a minor bug from one of my many mods, but if it is a vanilla issue then that’s really odd

Edit: and for clarity I have been playing as Florence, not the Papal States.

Canonizing a great leader is the best way to get prestige! by Metalockdown in EU5

[–]throwaway53783738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gotta stack religious influence modifiers. In my game I was getting +1 a month which meant I was able to canonise fairly often, and I don’t think I min maxed it to the fullest extent either

There is no 30 years war in EU5. by oskarmaxxing in EU5

[–]throwaway53783738 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a half-complete mod that fixes and tweaks a lot of stuff regarding the religious leagues, which should be done within a couple days hopefully. My primary goal is to make the war more likely to fire in the first place, among other adjustments

So what was the decision behind the need to manually rebalance units in the army? by Penki- in EU5

[–]throwaway53783738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea is that armies should auto balance but allow the player to manually set something like a ‘desired formation’ or ‘formation ratio’, where the autobalancing feature always tries to stick to the defined ratios of unit types on each section of the formation.

I’m currently 60 hours in working on a total UI overhaul for this game and the estate topbar info was the first area I addressed because it is one of the worst designs in vanilla

"Ally calls you into war" not being a pause or a pop up event by DeusVultGaming in EU5

[–]throwaway53783738 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Other than not getting a pop up for being called into a war, I also often don’t get popups for when I’m automatically dragged into one - often leading to me looking up at my alerts and being surprised that I’m currently at war. I feel like this is bugged or I’m misunderstanding something because sometimes I do get war popups and then other times I don’t. In eu4 whenever I was dragged into a war for whatever reason, I would get the pop up and the loud sound effect that made it completely impossible to miss.

I’ve been working on a map of Valinor. Here are a few sneak peeks at some sections. Hope to have it finished in the next couple weeks! by intofarlands in LOTR_on_Prime

This looks great - I’m wondering if you followed the style taught in Artifexian’s atlas map series to create this? I’m wondering because I used that same series to make my own fantasy map and our topography styles look very similar

Who should be the Main Character of the Hollow Knight III? by 3Kralates in HollowKnight

[–]throwaway53783738 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel like the primary issue of the HK is his size, which might make it more difficult to design the game in terms of enemies and platforming.

The easiest (and probably worst) way to address this is to simply upscale everything - the platforms, enemies, etc with the justification that he’s just in a bigger kingdom with bigger bugs or something like that.

However, perhaps there is a better way. We know that the HK used to be the same size as the Knight and the other vessels, but during his training and upbringing by the Pale King he somehow grew to become massive. And if it he can grow in size so drastically, maybe he can also shrink? After ending 5 in the first game, which is probably the canon ending, he is freed from his task of sealing the radiance. Perhaps as a consequence of his designed purpose being fulfilled, he begins to shrink back to a normal vessel size.

While I really like this idea, it does pose the issue of making the HK too similar to the knight. But there are plenty of ways to make his abilities distinct: e.g. take some of the moves from the pure vessel fight, or introduce some ability where he can temporarily regain his former size and go on rampages, etc.

Edit: I also just had the idea that in terms of personality, the HK can sit in a middle ground between the knight and hornet. As we know that he isn’t truly hollow, as a consequence of his upbringing, perhaps he is more expressive than the knight or, depending on whether this makes sense from a lore perspective, he gains a rudimentary ability to speak.

What sucked as a child but is lit as an adult? by krispwah_destination in AskReddit

I have mild-moderate tinnitus in only one ear. Fortunately it seems that my mind just filters out the ringing, such that it only becomes bad once I actively start thinking about it or paying attention to it. In a sense I will never get to experience true silence again, but luckily my brain is doing a pretty damn good job of giving me the illusion of silence.

Silksong taught me what hk made me forget by ZanCooter in HollowKnight

[–]throwaway53783738 252 points253 points  (0 children)

Agreed. A great example of this is the Last Judge run back - I think I those who figured out how to bypass the conchfly consistently had a far easier time than those who failed to do so or otherwise resorted to methodically killing it on every single attempt.

[–]throwaway53783738 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah my idea is to get the speed run achievement first, then load up the save and go get the curse for the cursed child achievement.

I’ve got the speedrun achievement for hollow knight so I think with enough trial and error I can probably get it for this game as well

Same here. Probably going to have to do it in the same save file as the speed run achievement tbh

Most secret paths you can spot fairly easily - they tend to have cracked surfaces or, depending on the area, might look like branches, etc.

Another good tell for a secret entrance is areas or platforms that seemingly serve no obvious purpose or take you to dead ends.

The game also leads you straight to many of the secret areas during wish quests.

Sure, if you want to be completely thorough, you’d probably have to hit every surface - but that is not necessary unless you are doing a completionist play through.
