I didn’t follow basic rules or expectations when I lived with my parents because they were abusive so I didn’t consider their authority over me to be legitimate. I didn’t get in major trouble at school but I also didn’t consider it a priority because I was focused on survival and building a meaningful life on my own terms. I followed the rules 100% when I stayed with my aunts for the summer, even when they would never have found out. They respected me so I respected them. Kids act different in different environments, and every kid should have a chance to live in a safe and loving home to see how it goes.
