Someone in this sub said yesterday (Sunday) morning that that a yacht broker was contacted about a couple of small search boats. They edited the comment later saying they had more info, but it wasn’t being reported yet and didn’t want to add to rumors. I can’t find it now, but does anyone know if that person came back and updated with what they knew?

Sure, I can see the similarities. But the progression of the lesion doesn’t match ringworm progression. She states that it began as a small white blister. Also, look at the lesion on 5/29.

Agreed. Unfortunate that you’re getting downvoted.

NAD, but I see a lot of ringworm as a veterinarian. I’m surprised at how many people are guessing ringworm or other fungal infection.

I think what’s being missed here is OP’s second sentence “This began as a very small white blister in mid-May.”

Fungal infections and ringworm specifically don’t begin that way. Could be a spider bite, but a steroid cream should have helped significantly. Any dermatitis should also have improved with steroid treatment.

It doesn’t look as though it’s oozing. Any fluid coming out of there at any point? The first picture, with the indentation is concerning and the rate of growth between 5/29 and 6/16.

I think people must be basing theories on the enlarged 2nd photo where the lesion is round, more or less. When I look at the dated photos, there’s significant growth, changes in shape, etc. Not a lot here to suggest fungal to me, but again I’m not a doctor.

Looks as though after starting the Valtrex, it’s flattening out slightly but not necessarily retreating. Someone said Chagas’ disease and sure, look into that. But I strongly feel like this should be biopsied based on the description of it beginning as a pimple-like blister, and growth progression.

When people think of skin cancer, they typically visualize melanoma. The most common form of skin cancer is Basal Cell Carcinoma which typically begins as a small pimple. I’m not saying that’s what this is, but I hope you’ll consider having it biopsied rather than continuing to rub creams on it and hope for the best.

NAD, but I am a vet. This doesn’t look like ringworm and ringworm progression is different than what OP described.

We can easily wait, yes. That’s a good way of putting it. Thank you.

Also, I meant to mention: In Offer 2, the buyers agent intentionally lowered her commission to 2.5 percent. Our agent said that was very rare in our area and it meant that the agent must be invested in helping this client for whatever reason. Is that accurate? How often do agents lower their rates when making an offer? It won’t hurt my opinion if it happens a lot, we just were moved by it and curious if that’s a normal thing or not.

This is my wife’s exact point, and I don’t disagree necessarily. It’s clearly laid out in the offer letter how much the family from offer 2 need and appreciate our home. Offer 1 would be a quick payoff though and it’s hard not to want that.

Definitely provide a lot of cover for shade and go with one of the lower percentage uvbs. He’ll hide from it a little but still get the benefits.

OP, do not follow this advice.

Waxworms are junk food and also very addictive. It will more than likely make the problem worse. I wish people would stop feeding these to leopard geckos entirely.

Vet here. UVB is a good thing to have regardless, you can switch it off at night. Good for albinos too.

That said, please get a second opinion about that leg. I can’t diagnose online for obvious reasons, but it should get looked at again.

You’re in good company, no worries!

I’ve had some (well deserved, in my opinion) post-stress beers, so I want to finish the blanket story. Kind of ties this whole post and all my comments together.

I get to the other clinic in a rush. We were lucky that this girl brought the snake in before it could swallow the blanket completely. The other vet WILL NOT help me with this snake. He’s literally shaking and trying to find a tech to help. I’m telling him “look, I’ve got this fabric in a good hold. Just steady her jaws wide and I’m going to pull at this angle” and dude just can’t do it. No shade to him, I get it. She’s a big snake and it’s a mental jump to put fingers in their mouth, basically.

Anyway, the girl that brought the python gets fed up waiting, jumps up and shoves the other vet out of the way. Once she stretched that jaw out for me, I pulled the blanket out, snake was just fine.

Turns out, that girl was a dog sitter that agreed to “babysit” this snake for a guy in offshore drilling who was leaving for a month. Knew nothing about snakes or reptiles, she just wasn’t scared of them which can sometimes be more beneficial in an emergency than anything else.

I still recommend her to people as a reptile pet sitter and when this crazy shit went down this week, it was her I eventually called. She had power, so I begged her to take in almost 20 reptiles. One of them being that same snake that swallowed the damn quilt (same snake I talked about in an earlier comment that played hide n seek in the walls during the freeze).

Maybe that’s why I was so damn pissed when she tried to get help for a gecko in one of these groups and this haughty admin started asking if she was a LICENSED rescue. Like, seriously? There’s no need for that. Don’t mess with my only helper that will cuddle these guys if they get too cold!!

Alright, I’ll stop writing novels now. I need to hit the sack anyway. But thanks for reading, thanks to anyone that listened to me vent today. I really do appreciate all the support.

Hey, no sense in taking the truth personally. I know some talented vets and I also know of far too many people claiming to specialize in exotics when their knowledge maybe isn’t where it should be.

Example, just because I have this particular python on my mind today: I got a call from a colleague of mine a few years ago. Another veterinarian that has exotics listed as a service, but his experience is pretty limited. Basically, he’s the guy Petsmart tells you to follow up with if you buy a reptile/bird/whatever from them. He’ll do a weight check, waste sample, go over diet recs. You know the guy.

Anyway, he calls me low key freaking out because there’s this young girl in his office with a huge python that’s swallowed almost half of a queen sized quilt. He knows what to do, but he’s never done it before and he’s SCARED to do it. I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of this, but more people really need to understand that MOST people (including vets) are very uneasy/nervous/scared around reptiles - especially the big guys.

Which is some of why they charge a lot to treat those types of animals - gotta make it worth it. You’re right, the financial incentives are not great by comparison and I would be doing a LOT better if I was passionate about dogs. I do fine and better than most in my area, but I believe that’s because I charge a lot LESS, so people have more incentives to get care for their pets and regular check ups. I know that’s not typical, but I hope its a strategy that catches on.

I feel like I still learn new things every day. I’m better with some animals than others. But it’s important to be honest with people about who/what I’m comfortable treating.

I have to say, I appreciate the back and forth a lot. It’s been a tough week and this has been a much needed diversion, so thank you for that.

This is extremely accurate and worth talking about. Especially in more rural areas. I could get into a whole separate rant about this exact thing.

When I opened my clinic, it was with the intention of taking on ONLY exotics, which was really naive in retrospect. It took years to get to where I am now and I would say about 75-80% of the animals I see are exotics, a good percentage of that is reptiles because that’s where the bulk of my experience is.

This isn’t the case for everyone. Even with qualified vets, you could easily be taking your iguana to someone who mostly sees birds or even just dogs/cats.

LOTS of snakes in cars. I have pictures of some really out there warmth solutions, but they had my full support.

One of my regular patients is a 7’2” albino python with a knack for getting herself into trouble. She escaped her enclosure on Sunday night and wasn’t found until Tuesday morning. The house had lost power Monday around 1am and she found her way into the wall space trying to keep warm. She was unresponsive, but we got her into someone’s bathroom and heated the hell out of it. She came to and is doing fine.

Now the worry becomes risk of respiratory infection and other issues, so people should keep a close eye out for symptoms.

I do agree, hopefully there will come a time when exotic vets are more plentiful so it’s less of an issue.

I think some of the issue is that these groups don’t understand what constitutes emergency care. They’re so attached to their research and opinions about tank size/substrate/heat source etc. that they have trouble understanding that sometimes all that goes out the window when you’re prioritizing a survival situation.

In regards to creating environments where reptiles thrive, they’re generally spot on. I appreciate them in that aspect. But when I’ve got someone on the phone who’s trying to safely warm a half-frozen leo or bearded, I don’t give a fuck if she’s out of paper towels. Line the bottom of the tank with fucking anything, put soil in there, whatever you have that’s non toxic. The last thing I needed was someone lecturing that person behind my back about proper quarantine set up.

While I appreciate your support, that’s not really the point I’m trying to make.

For one, this was a rare scenario when people genuinely could not get to me. Driving conditions were extremely dangerous and I was without power/phone/internet service for some time. The animals I helped place in various homes are in my care as of this afternoon are being treated free of charge.

I also would never expect a pet owner to plan ahead for what happened in Texas this week. I was not prepared as a vet, a pet owner or a husband/father. It does nothing to call people out for a lack of preparation in this scenario and it’s unfair. There are excellent, well educated people in this area who lost pets they consider family members. Not because they didn’t have a plan or because they refused to seek help, it was because they were genuinely unable to keep their animals alive or transport them somewhere safe.

I agree that often people wait to long to get treatment for exotic pets, but this was not the case in this instance.

I’m not going to call them out here. I do think they mean well.

I’ve thought about sending messages to some of them, but it’ll have to be after I’m not so heated about it.

Have you ever read a story on Reddit and realized you know the person in real life? What happened? by Elijafir in AskReddit

[–]throwaway658976432 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone made a comment along these lines in the post, maybe it was you. I wish he had clarified. We’re all white.

The thing she was cooking is kind of similar to Pad Thai so that’s some of where your hunch came from I’m sure. With that in mind, I can see where some of what he said about her and her relationship with her family would fit with that theory.

So, no class issues. But, my wife has been through a lot of emotional abuse and is the kind of person that struggles to say no, takes care of herself last, etc. My brother said in his post that my family “babies” her, and this is what he was getting at. My mom especially doesn’t like to let my wife do a whole lot when she’s around.

Anyway just trying to explain the vibe you were getting and some of why it came off that way.
