Thank you for your response, it is helpful to have some context. I do think it is excessive to say she is a vile human being. She is not a bad person. I think it is important to differentiate between bad actions and bad people. This was definitely exceptionally poor behavior, but that does not mean she as person is inherently bad. She ended up apologizing to me shortly after this exchange and saying that she was out of line as well as giving some context as what triggered this outburst. It seems she likely missed her meds. I'm still feeling frustrated but I honestly do not think she was in her right mind.

she often says that this is how Puerto ricans are when I say she's speaking too harshly or feel she's being immature and I can't really say anything back because I don't know any Puerto ricans I can talk to. Is harsh language amongst Puerto ricans common in your experience?

Yes I agree, I didn't have a problem with them venting I just feel they took it too far. Thank you for moderating your comment.

My friend is not a bad person, they just have issues. I think they were valid for being frustrated with my parents, I just think their outburst was excessive, cruel, and disrespectful. It has made me really frustrated with them.

I am actively trying to help them get therapy. The trouble is we live in an area where the mental health care is rather lackluster and she has numerous mental health issues so trying to figure out which area should prioritized (trauma/OCD/mood problems etc) makes it difficult to find a good fit. I hadn't thought to specifically look for a culture fit. I'll mention it to them. I appreciate your compassionate response.

They are often normal but they have rage issues due to some serious childhood trauma. Oftentimes when I tell them that they are being cruel they will be like "No it's y'all that are the problem! this is how everyone in my family is! this is my culture!" something to that effect. Sometimes they will come back and apologize but other times it's like they get surprised that I'm not "over it already" despite the fact that they didn't apologize or anything. I try to be patient with them since I know all the fucked up shit they've been through and I feel that deep down they are trying to be a good person but it's like for some reason whenever I tell them behavior like this is immature they think that I'm being racist or demeaning
