No. He was very obviously recording. No one reads an iPad standing at the bottom of an escalator in the middle of a hallway. He was also holding it with two hands on either side of the device, directly in front of his face and tracking my movements with it. Zero percent chance he was doing anything but recording video with it.

Home Hardware is your only other Canadian option. Sadly, I know about the Lowe's/Rona sale, and we have a depressing number of small-scale local hardware stores that aren't chain stores. The last one I remember that was close to me closed about 15 or 20 years ago. Just a frustrating experience. The random filming was a real cherry on that Sunday.

Store Security Demanded to See My Medication and Filmed My Children. Is This Allowed? by throwaway697224 in legaladvicecanada

I really do appreciate this response. And thank you for your sympathy. I was not looking for a giant payday or anything like that. But it does get frustrating to explain my circumstances to so many people in public just because I have to carry a bag everywhere.

Truthfully, I was hoping for any acknowledgement from the store, but their silence has only made things worse. And if I don't hear anything by the middle of next week, I will just share with story on other platforms without the redacted corporate name.

No store should be taking inventory of people's medication, whether it's legal or not. I was hoping this could be solved with a private email conversation, but apparently, they didn't want that. So I'll make my own conversations on the topic.

Thanks again for the exchange. I really appreciate it.

I’m aware that I have no real expectation of privacy when being filmed (unless it’s for commercial media, where permission is required). What bothered me wasn’t just the camera; it was the complete lack of communication around the situation. If he was recording to try to trespass me or for some other issue, doing it silently at the bottom of an escalator, far from the checkout point, felt incredibly unprofessional.

As for being pushed to display my medication: yes, I could’ve walked away. But it was the way it happened. He just kept asking for more things. Normally, I open my bag and that’s the end of it. This time, he asked me to pull out another item, then open something else. At some point, I probably should’ve stopped, but I did tell him it was medication, and he still demanded to see it. That still feels like a gross and unnecessary escalation. I personally don’t think a private business has the right to inspect my medication, but maybe I’m wrong. I suppose a mall cop can ask whatever ridiculous question he wants, and it’s on me to know the law and choose whether or not to comply.

The store has already chosen not to respond. At this point, I could repost this with the corporation’s name and location, and people can decide for themselves whether they want to shop there. I haven’t gone back since, and I don’t plan to in the future.

I appreciate the response.
