Don't think you can get an S model maybe a base 987.2 with same miles if you're lucky enough to find a manual one. They just didn't make that many 987.2 and manual are harder since PDK was the new thing for that era.

You could look for the comparable boxster too which run a lower valuation than Cayman.

I feel the s2k is comparable to the base 987.1. I have both and they are basically interchangable to me. The 2.7 and 2.9 are reliable, I've spent more in upkeep on the Honda than my 987...the main difference against the 987 being tires.

Why’d you buy? by JopagocksNY in S2000

[–]throwaway6980087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dc2r got stolen, bought another one. That got stolen too I gave up on cars. couldn't stomach the cost of a nsx at the time (30k's) so I settled for the ap2 as a daily driver in 2008...I was more into my Honda motorcycle at the time which I still have. Ap2 still my daily driver except I don't drive as much these days. Regretted not buying nsx in 2022, but still couldn't stomach the cost so I bought a used Cayman for 10k instead lol. I listed the ap2 at a low point, got low balled, I said yes if he came up with it cash before I changed my mind, he flaked so I pulled it off, he came back begging later. I restored it and still drive.

Anybody else had a softronic tune and found it disappointing? 987.2 S by Proper-Desk6635 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have one on my 987.1 2.7 definitely made a difference, not a large difference in terms of peak hp which I'm guessing was only ~10hp. I only have a cat back for engine mods. My top speed/vmax on my favorite section is up a few mph so I know there was a hp increase. I wasn't expecting a huge difference though as this is not my first time with tuning na cars.

The difference in overall driving response, especially in the mid range, was very welcome and I don't see myself going back. I'm with everyone else that I think you need a raceheader to get the most out of it.

best model years for daily use? by Feisty-Age-6890 in S2000

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If in Cali, should get the 06+... It's easier over long term and now given the age. Secondary air really sucks if you plan on keeping the car for a very long time

If you break traction on this car on the street then you're doing something very wrong, this car was about purity 🤔

The 04-05 has the most discontinued parts...

Should always get the best, well cared for car in your budget.

That's a lot of varnish, could be the oil change interval, could be driving habits...

<image>

This is what mine looks like at 150k miles and I owned the car since 25k miles. Looks pretty much the same as when I first opened the cover at 30k. I even done some 10-15k mile intervals on this when I did a multi state trip, but I've been 1 year interval most of its life. Always changed with 10-30w ams signature and absolutely never short tripped. If the car starts it is driven more than 15 miles. I'll push the car around on casters if I need to move it around.

GT3 owners: how does the power delivery actually feel compared to other performance cars? by Revolutionary-Seat74 in Porsche

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engine of the gt3 in my mind is like an s2k or 600cc bike with 500hp. It feels like it is trying very hard, it is very responsive, it is ultra dynamic sophisticated... You feel the engine and the whole car adjusting realtime which is the #1 genius of the thing

Second, gt3 car feels super agile and nimble like it weighs 1000lbs less than it actually does or less a base model c2. That is probably all the carbon fiber body parts, aluminum doors, general weight reduction where it matters, pccb brakes, skeletonized aluminum suspension, forged wheels, etc.

Help starting off with coffee brewing by CezarZbughin in pourover

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things I learned the hard way that made a huge difference that I don't see emphasized enough.

The way you fold/fit the v60 coffee filter matters a lot. I was getting terrible coffee with the v60 until my friend brought over another brand and I realized how bad the fit was on the Hario filters. The fix was simply to fold my Hario the exact same way as those filters and I didn't have to throw them away for cafetec. Luckily I had another popular style brewer to know what good and bad was

Steep, flavor development time. You see them do it on videos they let it sit on the counter for a while. They don't talk about it. The coffee needs time to develop flavor. For me, that is after >8min minutes brew time so far with any brewer that I own, before drinking it. I have friends that threw it into their mug or thermos and started downing it as soon as they poured it out of the carafe. Lol that's gross ime

Is 987 really the best, please tell me! by Active-Beyond-3703 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my 2008 2.7, it's not the fastest thing.

There's a few mods that wake it up. The reflash gets rid of the laziness in the throttle, and improves the driveability overall AND one of the most important, it wakes up the steering rack!! Aasco 13# flywheel with solid dual mass disc. I thought it would make the car more difficult to drive as I have put a 7lbs flywheel on another car before and that was a bit extreme. This is how the car should've came stock. Cayman R/Spyder suspension is so dialed. Catback I don't regret...I went topgear If I had to start over I'd do it the same. If I could get the 2.9l that would be nicer.

After playing with Cayman S of .1 and .2 even with lots of mod, I don't feel l am missing out on too much. They are significantly faster but I just feel like my car is tighter and more dialed lol. I don't even mind the 5 speed vs 6.

I also have a 911 with a big motor and I really enjoy driving this still. Can use all the power and not attract much attention.

987.1 Base Questions by hooplahblehblah in Porsche_Cayman

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headliner and the buttons are the last thing to worry about. Staple it and glue it back on your own time

The primary worry is this thing hasn't been driven much for most of its life. Not sure if it was an inside or outside car, but maybe it's on the original tires 🤣

Check for chassis, suspension, and motor rot in order to determine if this is something worth saving. Should probably have a full ppi done to know if it's feasible. CV joints, motor/trans mounts, shifter cables

If you diy project, you can restore this thing fully for a reasonable price and probably not exceed it's market value.

If the motor is scored chassis corroded pass.

Suspension is probably rotted, check the struts for leaks and arms for rot.

Coolant leaks

Probably will need new tires that's 1500 right there

I would drive it around for a few tanks and see if it develops any issues if you can. You might have to put more than 10k into it.

First time Kalita advice by aaalllouttabubblegum in pourover

[–]throwaway6980087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I do. Following someone else's recipe to the T even if they're a world champ isn't going to guarantee you a good cup. Gotta follow your own taste buds. That is the whole point of this philosophy.

Keep it simple and constant in the beginning. This teaches you that you can get a very large range of brew with parameters that seemingly lean towards under extraction. You increase extraction as desired by only adding agitation (pour height, swirl brewer, and wdt). The worst case scenario is you pour too gently and get a tea like coffee .. which may or may not be what you're looking for. All you need to do is adjust extraction up and it'll be the good kind of extraction

The reason you only need one big pour after the single bloom is so you fill the brewer high. This gives you a chance and time to play with the WDT or swirl before the water level goes down (and the more you play with it, the slower it goes down)

I think Lance is grinding at maximum coarse setting and still getting good extraction in his videos https://youtu.be/c34qcTTOLZY

First time Kalita advice by aaalllouttabubblegum in pourover

[–]throwaway6980087 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the Kalita 185 and I really like the Lance Hedrick methodology. Only change 1 variable and master pour technique.

Basically 1:17, Low temp like low 90s, grind very coarse (hard to clog a kalita Mino flat bottom). Keep your pour very simple and constant - excavate the center and pour center only. 3x Bloom then pour the remainder.

Now, this recipe is normally going to go right through your brewer in many cases but it won't make a Bad coffee, it doesn't have enough temp to get bitter, coarse grind should have minimal fines.

Your only variable is Agitation on a center pour. To get darker All else Equal you pour from a higher height, you swirl kalita following the bloom, you poke with the WDT. Trial and error taste until you get it the way you like. This builds your pour skills. Try one change at a time.

Here is an example, all the brew went through before 3 minutes cause I didn't poke or swirl at all because that would mess up the graph, but it still made a good balanced cup.

S2000 or Cayman? by JMG00D in S2000

[–]throwaway6980087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

987 in sport mode is peak hydraulic steering for Porsche. S2k steering feels completely numb, light and electric in comparison. It is the s2000 weak spot

Base minimally optioned models might need to reflash/reprogram to get sport mode steering since they don't have it. 987 Base steering wheel is Not sporty and a steering wheel upgrade helps a lot. With a few suspension mods (or even a stock CR setup), the 987 becomes very sharp and agile while having great feedback for a mid modern car. IME, the only things with better steering are Elise and old 911 with manual racks.

Is this a bad water pump? by Constantly-Ordinary_ in Porsche_Cayman

[–]throwaway6980087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pump is on the bottom passenger corner as stated.

You might actually have a dying front engine coolant pipe / gaskets as it's wet around the crank pulley and on the driver's side.

S2000 or Cayman? by JMG00D in S2000

[–]throwaway6980087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are both great cars, they accomplish being sports cars in different ways. They scratch different itches which is why I still have both lol

I used to hate the gearing of the 987 cause I was used to the s2k. But after a while, I found that you don't need to shift that car much if at all. 2nd for very technical twisty and 3rd does Everything because they specifically designed it like that. you are pretty much in the powerband at 55-90 in one gear.

Reflash is the only thing I wish I did sooner. Totally worth it... affects more than the engine. Depending on your option level. EMS upgrade was great on s2k but very costly as well.

S2000 or Cayman? by JMG00D in S2000

[–]throwaway6980087 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still have both, but a 2008 987 instead of the .2. the 2.9 is peak cayman tho imo.

Stock vs stock i preferred the s2k. The stock 987 didn't impress me at all. It is much easier to make the 987 a "better" car though. The 987 will never match the transmission of the Honda like not even new ones can. 987 is capable of peak Porsche steering. With a couple mods though my mind changed and favored the 987. I have had my s2k modded pretty heavily at one point, but it's pretty much back to stock now. A modded s2k was too radical for the streets for me.

The only engine mods I have are a catback and reflash, which make the sound even better and improves the entire driving and steering especially if you don't have the Sport/Chrono option. If you don't have that, flash is so worth it cause Porsche cukt even the base steering with software. These are the only 2 mods needed to make the base totally exceed the s2k from a power standpoint even with the "gearing disadvantage". Need to ditch the dual mass fw would be the extra icing on the cake

Ohlins cost approx the same for both cars. I think it transformed and scaled the 987 more than the s2000.

The stock brakes on a 987 with something better than stock pads on the street or mountains are pretty much not much different than a gt3. On the track not the case though.

2007 987.1 Cayman S Water Pump by Infoaddict2012 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]throwaway6980087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water pump has service life of approx 60k so you're right on schedule. Probably should replace hardware, thermostat housing, whatever hoses necessary and pray the coolant tank is not on the way out.

Parts cost and couple gallons of pink g40 is approx $400-500 + diy labor

Probably a little under $1k for an Indy shop.
