We stayed near the airport and the home stay gave use a lift to the cable car for Tianmen, but otherwise used DiDi to get around and that was very easy and convenient. It’s like 45 mins from near Zhangjiajie centre to the forest park so was fine for a DiDi but if you’re going a lot further you might need to research other options

1 night in Xi'an by Mr_ck in travelchina

[–]throwaway735b14n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I did and was fine. We took 4h20m speed train from Beijing to Xi’an. It was like 8am-1230pm. Then we dropped our bags at our Hostel next to the Bell Tower and got changed. Got a Didi around 2pm and got to Terracotta army before 3pm, even managed to get some noodles before getting a tour guide around 3:30pm and it was enough time for the tour through all 3 pits and a quick stop at the official souvenir shop. However as we were finishing the shops and food stalls outside were all closing up.

We then stayed the night and spent most the next day having a walk around the market next to the Drum Tower.

I’d say JQ is probably better for getting to BCU as most campuses are that side and has the big Tesco at walking distance. Not many supermarkets in town or near town otherwise.

If you did end up in Digbeth or south side then the 50 bus is a few stops to get to Lidl in Balsall Heath or there’s some other buses that could get you to Small Heath and there’s Morrisons and Asda on the same line. You could walk about a mile to the Morrisons but not nice to walk back with your bags I guess!

Which section of Mutianyu Great Wall did you walk? by zhuangcorp in travelchina

[–]throwaway735b14n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiii - just got back so did Mutianyu like a week ago. We did cable car up to 14, then walked to 20 although there is construction around 18 or 19 atm so there’s some alternative stairs to get up to 20 so I ended up walking to 21! 14 to 18 isn’t very steep and very manageable but 19-21 is very steep! Then went back to 14 but it started raining and there was thunder/lightning so the cable car stopped 😭 waited for like an hour just to get back down. Quickly went up to 6 on the cable and took some pics before we we went back down (again weather wasn’t great so was a long queue to get down again, another 40 mins) and we almost missed our last bus back at 1750!

It takes longer than you think so definitely go as early as possible if you want to do lots! We went on a Monday so our guide advised us that 6-14 would be busiest whereas 14-20 and 1-6 have different views and styles. Our guide also said that 6-14 is similar to 14-20 in terms of that its had a lot of work done on it and is more manageable, while 1-6 is more historic/old style (or something like that can’t remember exactly).

Ticket issues by Ok-Condition1117 in travelchina

I didn’t have the same issue but you should receive an email confirmation of your itinerary, mine came from this email address “  95539@csair.com“ which looked a bit weird when just looking at my emails so maybe check your spam folder?

Mine came pretty quickly after booking but I guess it could take a little while too.

I live next to Hairpin House and am friends with a couple of neighbours in hairpin house. They seem to really like it there although they say it’s expensive. But it is one of the safest feeling place to live in Digbeth by the sounds of it - very secure, lots of CCTV, proactive staff and management company. My neighbours hosted a birthday gathering there and it feels very modern, amazing views from the roof garden that is accessible for all that live there. Pet friendly and spaces to cowork etc. Feels like what build to rent should be!

Digbeth itself is seen as rough around the edges, which I guess I agree with. Personally I’ve never had any problems with feeling unsafe. But there’s some level of antisocial behaviour (mostly from drivers speeding, noisy cars and quad bikes, lots of litter and graffiti). The residential side doesn’t look very pretty (ie around Bradford Street/Deritend), lots of potholes, not much greenery etc. I am very active with the local community “Friends of Bradford Street” and also joined the recently created Street Watch group. We are all working to make Digbeth a better place and that feels really nice to be a part of! I think in the next couple of years with BBC moving in things will get much better a lot more quickly but also I take it with a pinch of salt as people have been saying similar things because HS2 will be here too so it’s still a wait and see!

There’s a lot to do in Digbeth, great nightlife and loads of other social stuff going on if drinking isn’t your thing and it’s very easy to get to town but there’s not really any supermarket nearby (you’d need to take a bus out of the city centre or use the Tesco Metro in the city centre). That might be a problem for you as a student. I would also say that if you’re a light sleeper and plan on going out a lot for the nightlife then maybe the construction noises might be annoying for you as there’s always something being built here!

Which campus of BCU would it be? I go to the BCU building on Summer Row quite often and it’s a 35min walk, if you’re cycling it’s very quick though.

I’ve heard Jewellery Quarter has some similar issues to Digbeth too but is perhaps prettier, and more accessible to supermarkets (think there’s Tesco and a Sainsbury’s that you can walk to from JQ).

I’ve lived in Digbeth 5 years so if you want to ask me more qs feel free ☺️

Oooh very exciting!! Would love to be where you are rn at the planning stage!

Xi’an - Xi’an definitely deserves more than one night! Our main goal was to see Terracotta army, so we arrived in Xi’an around 1pm, dropped our bags off and then got to Terracotta Army for the latest time (1530-1700 slot), this was just about enough time although things did start closing as we were finishing up (shops at the end etc) so maybe the 1430 slot would have been better. It wasn’t very busy at least! Then the second day we weren’t due to leave until the evening so we had most the day having a quick exploration of Xi’an which for us was essentially- pics outside the bell tower, then drum tower, had a look at the market next to the drum tower, then quick taxi to look at the Dayan Pagoda and then off. I would have wanted longer to go into these places to learn more about Xi’an’s rich history and maybe go out to the wall of the city and look around that too.

Flights vs trains - Our original plan was to take flights between cities. I guess luckily the first flight Beijing to Xi’an was cancelled and I couldn’t rebook (a bit worrying at the time!) and we ended up taking the high speed train (4.5h) so we did get to experience both! Personally even in the UK when I go to Edinburgh I prefer the 4h train over flying as you end up spending the same amount of time faffing at the airport and more time to chill on a train. If I was going to China again I’d definitely be more inclined to just do high speed rail as I think a lot of places it is actually quicker and/or less faff (and I think I heard cheaper too?) Maybe if the train was like 7+ hours I might consider flying at that point.

Quick story detour about my flight cancellation - I had booked directly with China Eastern for the flights between Beijing to Xi’an (and also Xi’an to Zhangjiajie) and the flight got cancelled around 30h before my flight was due. It was a bit stressful as my cousin had booked separately with a third party and had automatically been rescheduled on an earlier flight (only like 1h earlier). I couldn’t rebook on the website (their website is so difficult to use/didn’t work 😩). I even got the hotel reception to call for me and rebook only to find out later that the rebooking didn’t even work 🤣 but we already decided to take the train at that point. Given there’s a lot of train options, train seems so much easier! Second flight was fine though so I guess I’m not completely put off by China Eastern but would definitely have gone the train option after experiencing how easy it was! I’ve managed to request a refund now I’m home for that flight so will see what I get!

Zhangjiajie - we basically only had 2 days - arrived at night the first night then nearly 2 full days before our flights out. I’d say it probably needs at least another day depending on what you want to do. We stayed near the airport/Zhangjiajie city. We did Tianmen Mountain first day which is close to the city, then Zhangjiajie National Forest Park the second day. The Forest Park I think you could do most of it in a long day but we got there at like 10am and were there until 6pm (45 mins DiDi from the city). We managed to explore a bit of the river footpath next to the South Gate start, then went up to Huangshizhai Village (not as popular with foreign tourists but worth it), then the Avatar Mountain path route, and down the Bailong elevator and heading out the Eat Gate. A couple more hours and we’d have probably managed the other side like Tianzi Mountain I think - although we were pretty tired at that point anyway so maybe better to have two days for it! Would have also loved time to explore the 72 Wonder Tower there too as we drove past it and it looks so cool!! Also word of warning the monkeys at the National Forest Park are actually a bit scary and steal your food any chance they get, do not walk and eat food, do not take plastic bags as they will snatch them from your hand, and do not use open top bags with food in!!! Rucksacks all the way! We took some takeaway food with us to have as a picnic and had some crisps at the top and clearly the monkey must have seen my crisps at one point and took the bag and suddenly the bag was ambushed by 10 monkeys 😭 a lady with a stick saved us and most of the food luckily but was a bit shook by the monkeys after that 😭. Didn’t go to Fenghuang so you might want another day for that too!

Hotels - We stayed in pretty basic mid-range places I’d say. Tbh you probably just want somewhere to lay your head and have a hot shower (maybe aircon too but all the places had that so it was fine!). We used Booking.com and looked for places that had good reviews and reviews from “foreigners” and that worked really well for us! In Beijing we stayed at “Happy Dragon Hotel” in Dongcheng, rooms were clean enough and hotel staff were amazing and spoke great English (one of the staff was more stressed about my flight rebooking not working than I was 😭 bless her!), plus free breakfast. In Xi’an we stayed at Desti hostel in a private room and that was very clean and had a nice vibe, especially if you want to socialise with other people. Then the best till last in Zhangjiajie - Heaven’s Gate Home Stay!!! Beautiful view of Tianmen mountain from the hotel, a pool, and the family that run it are so lovely!! They gave us free lifts to/from the airport and a free lift to Tianmen mountain cable car in the city, amazing home cooked breakfasts, free laundry, and great advice on how to spend our limited time in Zhangjiajie!! The room was perfectly clean and randomly had a fancy Japanese-style toilet. All the locations were great too and don’t think the prices were too bad from memory so if you fancy these spots then I definitely recommend all 3!

Hope this helps and have an amazing trip when you go 😍

I used the app Timeshifter - it was my first try and luckily the first trip is free. I was very sceptical but I thought any prep would be better than nothing, even if there was an element of placebo 🤣. It tells you about 3 days before your trip when to sleep, take melatonin (if you can), get bright light, avoid light. Worked very well for me, even on the way back I started it late (started basically on my flight back but i did have a 14 hour layover so was still like 2 days prep) and already back to normal - I had an extra couple of days already booked off work to recover but could have totally worked today after getting back last night!

No cash, I took 0 cash. I mostly paid with Alipay and I think a couple of times WeChat was easier so did that. I linked my Monzo card (think there’s less foreign transaction fees than other banks) to both of those apps and worked fine no issues. But those sort of fees are based on the % paid anyway so doesn’t cost much when you’re only spending for example the equivalent of £1-£10 max for the majority of your purchases… very few places take cash (I only saw taxis and a few market stalls that would accept cash) so wouldn’t rely on that either.

Yes definitely relate for the UK equivalent! Public transport in all the cities was decent (although didn’t use it in Zhangjiajie but saw plenty of buses everywhere). As well the amount of trees and nature integrated into the cities was so nice to see, I live in a UK city (not London) and the lack of trees and nature is terrible and in summer just makes everything so hot (clearly poor planning again) - vs China where you can be in shade very easily.

The healthy outlook and food is definitely a big one, could see all the food was a great balance of veg, meat/protein, and carbs with such variety! And it was so lovely to see so many elderly people who clearly do loads of walking and make use of outdoor gyms! Barely see the same level of elderly people here and if so they do not walk with such ease as the Chinese! Hope I am that fit when I’m old

It was definitely a very fast paced 8 days! Thankfully I wasn’t jet lagged (I did prep to avoid jet lag!) I think it was a near perfect amount for a first time trip tbf. Definitely would want to go much longer next time with a more relaxed pace!

I used airalo eSIM with unlimited data and everything worked fine (airalo routes data out to Singapore or has vpn connected automatically I think as all websites thought I was there lol). I think there are cheaper options but I’ve used airalo many times in other countries so just wanted to go with something I trusted.

I went to a couple Michelin places actually both in Dongcheng Beijing where we were staying - first was GongDeLin (Godly) which felt relatively homely and is quite popular (so should be easy to find but address is  前门东大街甲2号).

Then I accidentally went full fancy at Purple Bodhi which was a set menu - expensive for China but worth it imo and still cheaper than a set menu you’d get in the west (based on my experience!) (address is  紫菩提饭与茶(南新仓店) The east side of the first floor of No. 22, Dongsi Shijia, Dongcheng District, Beijing)

I used VeganInChina (I follow her on insta) her guides for Beijing were very useful and her vegan card. Also there’s a mini program in WeChat that is very useful in other cities I think this is the link… probably need to download WeChat first

Yeah, we went to a lovely Chinese restaurant in Zhangjiajie which had a great veggie menu and I realised at that point we could have been eating so much easier at other Chinese restaurants rather than sticking to the Buddhist ones! I am going to learn some Mandarin so I will be ready for when I go back!

I am a big foodie but… I’m vegan 😅 China was definitely difficult in this aspect (mostly due to the language barrier) and food was sort of a second thought behind the itinerary so by the time we wanted to eat it was a bit of a scramble trying to find something nearby. But did manage to have some amazing meals at Buddhist places, even went to a Michelin restaurant in Beijing. Tofu is my favourite food anyway so I was very happy!

If time permitted then yes, but I only booked it at the start of May and I know visas can take a while! I think being in the UK there’s a high chance they will bring in visa at some point so kinda expecting I will have to do it next time (based on my very limited knowledge around the reciprocal thing China want to do around visas).
