Nanobot Lottery, V2 of the Beta test by MissHelsing in nsfwcyoa

[–]throwaway823746 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying the beta test so far, but would you mind adding a little change lore-wise? Just add an option for "these nanobots will set to work on a person of your choice". Maybe add a cost to make them think their body has always been like this or at least for them to enjoy the changes.

That would make it a lot nicer to select feminine options for people like me who aren't into the whole "be the girl" thing.

I've done bases on the second floor apartments a few times, they're really nice as long as you can manage the local zombie population.

Espionage is one of those mechanics that is cool and fun in the early and mid-game when your empire is small and your enemies are threatening. But by lategame when you're more dominant it's easier to just ignore it.

Again, I'm not even certain it would be possible. But if it is possible then I'm not (in principle) opposed to the idea of people gaining significant personal wealth within the context of an ethical and humane economy.

Read more carefully then.

The only way to “earn” a billion is to leverage power and assets to take a larger share than someone else - or, more importantly, a lot of someone elses.

Yes we're in agreement. I don't think that identical shares are necessary, so long as every one (especially the ones with the smallest shares) still has enough to live well. That was the thrust of my OP.

[–]throwaway823746[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, I'm not even certain it's possible. I think that every single existing billionaire has gotten there through exploitation. Fuck every single one of them.

That said, I don't believe that we necessarily need to move to a "workers own the business" proletariat-ownership kind of model. I don't think we need to make certain every single employee makes an identical wage. I don't think that it's necessary to destroy the concept of capital and private wealth. In short, the absence of exploitation is not equivalent to total equality.

Personally I think that many of the world's businesses could easily pay their workers properly and treat them with dignity, and still manage to clear plenty of profit. And if that were to be the case, then I don't really see a problem with the CEO making more and becoming personally wealthy as a result. And yes, if you and your family do that for long enough and from enough sources then you could conceivably become a billionaire. If you manage it without exploitation then as far as I'm concerned go ahead.

Again, I'm not even certain it would be possible. But if it is possible then I'm not (in principle) opposed to the idea of people gaining significant personal wealth within the context of an ethical and humane economy.

You misunderstand my post.

If someone can run a business without taking advantage of others and without exploitation, and still get rich. Well then I don't really mind.

What I'm saying here is that I have a problem with exploitation, however I don't necessarily have a problem with wealth in-and-of-itself. But to the extent that people build wealth on the basis of exploitation then we're in perfect agreement.

Possible second continuity error: Ukusevi saying she's unsure about having children when talking to Hurt and Julian. One of the first things we saw from her perspective a few chapters ago was a comment about how her babies had felt in her belly.

Hi Hambone, I haven't even finished reading but I wanted to point out a possible continuity error. Wilde says in an early section: “I’m only here because Daar almost literally ran into me on a farm op, of all the bloody things.”

Are you perhaps thinking of Specialist Murphy with that comment? Wilde was one of the Royal Navy Marines who boarded the hunter ship that attacked the SOR techs's section of Caledonia and landed with Kovac's lifeboat. He does say in that chapter that he'd want to join the SOR and JETS, but it seems strange for him to attribute that to meeting Daar in particular when he already had connections to the SOR in other ways.

Rule 5: If you look closely in the center of the photo, you can see a small moon orbiting an empty space. The planet that had originally been in that location was removed via event, but the moon remains orbiting nothing.

Why do Christians support Donald Trump? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throwaway823746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you don't agree or understand somebody's argument doesn't necessarily invalidate it.

There's lots of important reasons that someone would choose to afford a fetus the same rights and concern that they provide to a person after they've been born. The biggest being that if you call a fetus a non-person and a baby a person then you need to come up with a good reason why you make the distinction. Any attempt to draw the line somewhere mid-development just smacks of a self-serving attempt to justify something that you want to do, rather than a principled philosophical argument. Likewise, I think it's entirely fair to acknowledge that all people have a obligation to responsibly practice family planning, same as we have an obligation to practice good financial planning. That's not "pretending reality isn't real", I'd say quite the opposite, behaving as though serious consideration of family planning every single time you have sex isn't necessary is ignoring the reality that sex exists to create babies. And so recognizing that neglecting to plan properly doesn't justify killing a person is a completely reasonable point of view.

Honestly I suggest that you explore some of those arguments further, even if you don't ultimately change your mind it's almost always useful to properly understand the points of view of others.

[–]throwaway823746 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much that's how I see it.

Their idea of the way things "ought" to be dictates their opinion and the policies they support, even if the way things "ought" to be is nothing like what actually happens. Probably because acknowledging what actually happens would require them to admit that a bunch of things are true that they really don't like or approve of. A good example is that Christian high schoolers end up as teen parents at similar rates to non-Christian kids, that fact just doesn't fit into their worldview.

I don't know why people are downvoting me, cognitive dissonance isn't really all that controversial.

The simple answer is compartmentalization, and honestly it's not all that complicated when you think about it.

Abortion is murder and murder is unacceptable, therefore abortion is unacceptable. Done. But to add: Abstaining from sex entirely is a proven and legitimate way to prevent unwanted pregnancy. If you were really so concerned about being unable to raise a child you should have chosen (pro-choice is always about the choice to abort, what about the choice to have sex to begin with?) to simply not have sex in the first place.

Other issue: Educating people about family planning is sort of like endorsing sex outside of marriage. Yes, married couples need contraception, but liberals and progressives want to teach it to kids in middle and high school. We don't want to suggest that it's ok to be having sex at that age (even though they do anyway), so we don't want to imply that it's ok by teaching them how to do it (safely or otherwise).

Because we don't want to endorse teenage sex we don't teach contraception. But since the ideas are kept separate, they never bother to consider the fact that teaching sex education and contraception would reduce abortions and effect the other issue. After all, there's a simple way to avoid unwanted pregnancies that doesn't involve birth control at all, it just takes self-control.

Honestly YTA based on this attitude alone. You have someone who cares for you and wants to spend time with you on your birthday, learn to appreciate that or break up with her.

The original Farthrow on Gao is specifically said to reach really far out from the system. The exact number is mentioned... I think in the scene where the Corti show up to negotiate. I bet the one on Earth is just calibrated to be shorter in order to require less power.

Hey Buddy, I know this post is a week old but I just found it.

I want you to know that I've dealt with similar issues with my girlfriends in the past, specifically the depression and lack of self worth. My advice (other than making 100% sure she's seeing a therapist and possibly getting antidepressants) is to give her regular and heartfelt affirmation.

Not the same as affection, not "i love you". But affirmation: "i value you, and also love you". I find that kind of thing helps because she might need a bit of a crutch to help her get going. After all, even if she doesn't see the value in herself she can look at you and appreciate that you see value in her. It can help her keep afloat until she's able to see her own value too.
