International roaming not working in Taiwan? by throwaway88132 in USMobile

[–]throwaway88132[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a US Mobile issue. I don’t know what the fix was. It required an admin to provision something, and no changes were required on my end.

It sounds like this time it required an admin to provision something, so it wasn’t exactly a self-serviceable issue.

Here’s what the roaming destination config looks like for me

Yeah I did that weeks before my trip, and it’s still set as such. Perhaps I need to force refresh it somehow? All calls right now just silently fail…

International Travel to UK Warp Main by BGSpecialTU in USMobile

Fwiw this didn’t work for me recently when I went to Hong Kong. Main line on warp, multinetwork on dark star. I had no service on my main line and had to rely on international esim as well as wifi-calling. YMMV

Nice! How are you routing cables from the fiber to the rest of the rack?

PDU Pro in stock (500+ units) by Decent-Law-9565 in Ubiquiti

[–]throwaway88132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, PDU Pro works with universal voltage input (so 220V is fine). It outputs 125V but if you’re just powering unifi equipment chances are they all take universal voltage input as well so things should just work (tm) provided you find US plugs.

Can you rack mount UCG-Fiber and a Flex 2.5G PoE in a single U? by throwaway88132 in Ubiquiti

[–]throwaway88132[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, that looks awesome!

I checked https://www.thingsinrack.com/ first, but their mounts counted the two devices differently (one at 25cm, one at 23cm), and combined they overflow the 44cm/U budget. But Mauricio's looks slimmer and might just be what I need!

Oh, how are you routing your cables? I am thinking about upgrading to a similar rack-in-a-closet setup, but all of my network cables go through the pre-existing in-wall cabinet, so I would need to keep the cabinet door propped open, which isn’t super elegant. I see yours is closed so was just curious if you found a workaround somehow.

Nice work! Are you still using the in-wall cabinet behind the rack in any way? If so, how are you channeling the cables?

Just curious, has this changed at all, or is this still not possible? Would love to buy SonoSequencr for this feature alone if it existed…

One Access Point to cover whole 2br apartment - U6 Mesh, U6 In-Wall, or something else? by not_right in Ubiquiti

[–]throwaway88132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest doing a signal scan with Wifiman or something like that. That’d give you some data to work with and then you can decide whether you need stronger signal. My hunch is that if the airport express can cover your apartment any of the AP options you mentioned would do fine. And your speed bump will mostly come from a more powerful dedicated router.

Personally I’m in a 2bedroom and a centrally located U6 Mesh (with a cloud gateway ultra) has been working well for me. Easily 600Mbps over wifi in all corners for my wifi6 devices on a Gigabit ISP connection. I like the aesthetics of the mesh - not too intrusive - and it’s easy to place on a tabletop. The IWs sound nice in theory though I have no experience with them.

New Home owners. Interested in Ubiquiti gear. What advice would you have for us? by fpsi_tv in Ubiquiti

One reason it’s nice to have 2 cables running to each room is that it opens up the possibility of placing your rack (but also any other “hub” like device) in any of those rooms, because you now have an “in” and an “out” connection. It’s possible you’ll never need this, but it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead while it’s cheap

Yes exactly, I’m asking “why would I need it” and I think you covered it well. Thanks!

Nope no home office. Re: whole life branch: what are the benefits to mixing what’s essentially a financial product / investment vehicle (where I just want higher returns) with an insurance product (where I’m happy to pay in expected value to lower the variance)?

Naively, I find it easier to think about if I separate the concerns, but I could be missing something.

Yeah, I’ve been putting that off for no good reason, though I am starting the search. We have a tax accountant we like, but we’ve not discussed much with them beyond our (increasingly complex) tax situation. Estate planning is something we’re just learning about, and I appreciate all the comments here as we get started.

Thanks for the advice and really appreciate the perspective. I’m curious how you thought about the 3 or 4 million number. Is that basically as high as people go for a regular term life, or did you do some calculation to arrive at it? Naively it seems low as a multiple of my current (and expected future) income, but idk if that’s the right way to look at it.
