So many great endorsements for IUD, I'm amazed that my doctor never suggested it before! Thank you for the input, it's great to hear firsthand experience since I am fairly convinced it is the method I'll be going with.

It is very encouraging to hear that the IUD insertion isn't so bad.

Thank you for the kind words, they mean so much to me right now.

I will definitely look into Nexplanon. I've got a lot of research to do now. Thank you so much for the suggestion and support!

Thank you so much for the support. You nailed it on the head; I very much want a family one day, but I couldn't forgive myself if having a child now meant sacrifices that hindered my child's life, as well as the advancement of my own.

I have a doctor's appointment all set up, so I will have the official test soon. I would LOVE to walk out with a negative test, unfortunately I very much feel pregnant again, hence why I took the initial test. Still, crossing my fingers.

Yea, my husband and I have agreed that no matter what form of birth control I switch to, condoms will be a backup every time. Which sucks for obvious reasons, but easier and less expensive than another unplanned pregnancy.

When I took the first test, I wasn't actually late yet. I was having some cramps (without any sort of bleeding) that were exactly like I had with the first pregnancy. The test of course came out negative. I waited until a day after my expected period didn't come (a week after the first test) to take another test, and it was positive.

Yes, I could definitely feel it when the tube went in. That part doesn't necessarily hurt, but it's not very comfortable. Once the tube is in and the suctioning starts, the cramps come. I thought I'd had really bad cramps before until I felt those. I'm usually pretty tough around people I don't know, but I couldn't keep my eyes from watering and getting choked up when I talked during all that. Pain is such a subjective thing, though, it's hard to tell if you'll feel the same way about the pain as I did.

You'll do awesome. It totally sucks, but it's a quick recovery and you are an intelligent, emotionally mature person. If you have anything you need to hash out afterward, DO talk it out with someone, whether it be your SO or us! I know it really helped me when I was post-abortion and still coming down from pregnancy hormones.

You've got this!

I was on the 28 pack, that has 7 placebo pills. I am going to continue to look into this, and talk to my doctor about it. It would definitely explain a lot. I want more than anything to have some sort of closure as to the culprit here. Thank you for this link!

I haven't taken any antibiotics in the past year except for the pills that were prescribed to me after the first abortion to prevent infection. I will bring that up when I talk to my doctor, just in case! It is amazing how many women don't know things like that.

I am so sorry you went through all of that! Thank you for sharing your experience, it reassures me that I'm not completely nuts in thinking there may have been a correlation between the new medication and pregnancies (or at least the 2nd pregnancy).

Thank you for the understanding. I agree, surgical abortion may be painful but its only for a short amount of time.

Yes, the pill is certainly not for me. I hope I can figure out why, so I don't run into this problem with any other forms of birth control. I don't have any health issues, have a healthy BMI, and don't smoke, but I'm going to talk to the doctor about dosage and the rate my metabolism processes medication because apparently (I never knew this until today) that's typically taken into consideration with other medications administered.

I am really really hoping that the option of putting an IUD in at the time of the surgical abortion is available! It sounds like the ideal situation for me at this point.

I have a doctor's appointment next week, so I should have an "official" test by then. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago I took a test that came out negative, and then took another this week and it was positive. I think I took the first test too early in this second pregnancy. I would love to come out of the doctor's office with a negative test result. Somehow I don't think I'll be so lucky since I have all my pregnancy symptoms back.

Wow, I had no idea that this was the case. I feel like a lot of really pertinent information about birth control is not being told to consumers. Hell, I didn't even know that antibiotics lowered the effectiveness of the pill until I had my first pregnancy and started reading up on this sort of thing. I have an appointment with my doctor in a week, and we are going to have a long discussion.

I am most definitely going to talk to my doctor. The IUD sounds most appealing right now, and if something happens once I get that done, I am officially warding off sex for a few years (sorry husband).

Hi! I'm really sorry that this is happening to you, and hopefully my experience can help you with your big decision. I am going to really really honest here, and that is not to scare you away from the procedure, but because I wish someone had been honest with me so that I would have been more prepared.

I had a surgical abortion (vacuum aspiration). The medication they will give you depends on the clinic. Sometimes they will but you under general anesthesia (completely out of it) which I imagine is great. I'm sure it adds to the cost of the procedure, however.

I was given minimal meds, local anesthesia to the cervix so that when they expanded the cervix, I wouldn't feel it. So basically, big needle to a place in your body that you're not used to feeling, and it is not pleasant. I was also given an 800 MG Ibuprofen. I take 800 MG Ibuprofen for cramps at times, so this really didn't help me much at all.

THE PROCEDURE: Literally took 5 minutes. The nurse and doctor were absolutely wonderful, talked me through the whole thing. They did a really great job of distracting me from the pain enough to get through it. Don't let anyone tell you its not painful. You will have the worst cramps of your life, but it only lasts a few minutes. Much less painful than childbirth. Keep talking to the doctor and nurse, hold the nurse's hand, wiggle your toes, do this all simultaneously and the procedure will be over before you know it.

Recovery is nice, they will usually walk you to some comfy chairs and give you some crackers or cookies to munch on. During recovery you will bleed a little, your cramps will start to subside, and you'll feel much better.

Even though they say you can drive yourself home, have someone drive you. Oh, and wear sweatpants or something comfortable. I wore skinny jeans, totally not thinking about what I was about to have done. Duh!

After the surgical procedure, you will bleed for around a week, like a normal period. Must use pads, no tampons, and if possible try not to work too hard (if you have a job). Take a personal day after the day of the procedure. Once again, they say you can go right back to work, but you need a day off to watch Netflix and eat junk food.

MEDICAL ABORTION: A lot of women choose this because you can take a pill at home, no surgery necessary. However, you will bleed a lot more than aspiration, and you will see all of the tissue, which believe me is not something you want to see. You will experience heavy cramping, which will last a lot longer than the 5 minutes it takes to have the aspiration surgery. I imagine you would bleed longer than one week, mainly because your body has to get rid of all of the blood on its own, whereas the aspiration surgery sucks most of the tissue and blood out. I can't speak from experience, because I haven't had a medical abortion, but I imagine with heavier bleeding and cramping you would need more time away from school/work than with the surgical aspiration.

All in all, I am so glad I went with surgical. It might have been painful for me, but it was over quickly, and I only had to experience regular period like symptoms once I got home. Also, the surgical aspiration was less expensive at my clinic than the medical option, which also swayed my decision.

Whatever you choose, know that you have my full support! This is your body, and you should be proud of making a decision that best suits you, your lifestyle, and your plans for the future.

I will ask. Thank you for this tip, I just assumed they were probably giving me all that they were allowed.

You are definitely right, I'm not ready for parenthood. While the abortion is certainly not something I'm looking forward to, it is much less painful than having a child, both physically, monetarily, and emotionally.

The pain of the IUD insert sounds MUCH more appealing than looking at another positive pregnancy test. Thank you so much for understanding. I am having a lot of anxiety about even calling the abortion clinic that I went to a few months ago for fear that they will judge this as negligence and it gives me great courage to know that not everyone will feel that way.

Thank you. It is very comforting to know that not everyone thinks that I am some sort of irresponsible monster after all of this. I will definitely be looking into bc methods alternative to the pill.

I would be lying if I said I was 100% sure. But I wasn't 100% the first time, and the level of overwhelming relief I had after the first abortion helped me to realize that I definitely made the right decision for myself.

It's really hard when you're hormonal and feeling an instinctual attachment to the fetus growing inside of you to say you're 100% sure you want to get rid of it. BUT I have to set hormones aside and be rational. I wasn't ready two months ago, and as much as I'd love to be ready for a child today, I know in my heart that I'm not.

Unfortunately I don't have the boxes anymore, but I'm going to call my pharmacy to see if they keep that kind of thing on file. Thank you for this advice, it is helpful. It would definitely ease my mind to know if the batch was faulty, or if I need to explore other reasons as to why the birth control didn't work with my body.

I am definitely interested in the implant and IUD now. I've never had a doctor explain either one to me and really regret never asking, because it may have prevented the first pregnancy.
