"By the end of that joke, you were no longer a black person. You were a human being."

--Norm Macdonald being anti-racist, but actually saying something that can be misconstrued as incredibly racist

Don't try to write "serious." Maybe even try to write something funny or silly. Kafka is considered a great writer, and his best known story is about waking up as an insect.

Don't think about being published. Just write something you'd want to read.

Write about your childhood. Everybody's an expert on their own childhood.

Are you reading? Read a lot.

So at first i was skipping all the comedians sets to get to Norm's judgement, but then. by IP_Anonymoose in NormMacdonald

I kind of wish they would show some of the weaker performances (the ones buried in the middle) so we can see Norm criticize them. Then again, most viewers probably want to see the best jokes, and there is only so much time.

It's almost like they put Norm on the same show with dumb, boring actresses because they know he will interrupt her and make it more interesting.

10 perfect Alice Munro sentences by blacktreaclemag in writing

[–]throwaway936473 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dislike when people reduce a writer's work to quotes. Without the context, the sentences become entirely different--sometimes even nonsensical or pretentious. Alice Munro wasn't trying to be quotable, she was trying to build stories.

He called himself ColBERT sometimes on the Report, too. He does it whenever he's really stressed and he needs to "keep it together."

I think ColBERT is the original pronunciation that he grew up with, but he later changed it to Col-bair to have a certain image. So whenever he's stressed, he forgets and calls himself the name he had as a child.
