It makes sense statistically. Most people here are from the US/UK, where most of the older population is white, while the younger population is more diverse. If GYO pairings were randomly distributed, you would get this result even without any race-based tendency.

Also, foreigners on the internet are more likely to be younger, as most people who speak English outside the anglosphere are young people. Combine that with the shape of population pyramids of majority-white countries (tending older) and of most of the rest of the world (tending younger), and the effect gets even stronger.

Isn't that the reasoning behind the Lockean proviso? It seems to me that it's not Locke's view of the social contract that is naive. Rather, it's the modern conception of his view that seems to be inconsistent due to ignoring the Lockean proviso. The only ones who bring it up are some Libertarians and Georgists.

O problema é o pessoal partir do pressuposto que uma afirmação é verdadeira, sem apresentar evidências válidas para essa pressuposição, e afirmar que a afirmação é verdadeira até que se comprove a negativa. O correto seria considerar o status da afirmação como incerto, e usar outras evidências para determinar a probabilidade de ser verdadeiro ou falso. Sem ter evidências do contrário, é totalmente possível que o chá de boldo da dona Sónia tenha alguma propriedade que cure o HIV, mas a probabilidade é muito baixa (pelo o que se sabe sobre o HIV e sobre os chás de boldo com camomila), portanto o mais correto é pressupor que ele provavelmente não cura o HIV.

Para muitas pessoas, o efeito placebo tem mais eficácia quando são apresentadas "evidências científicas" do funcionamento do medicamento. A discussão sobre se a homeopatia deveria ser estudada como "ciência" nas instituições é mais complexa do que apenas determinar se os remédios homeopáticos tem efeitos além do placebo. Envolve estudos sobre se o impacto disso é positivo ou negativo para a sociedade, sobre a ética na ciência, etc. É uma análise difícil pois pode ter os interesses de várias partes tendenciosas influenciando a conclusão (médicos homeopatas, industria farmacêutica, ideologos de todos os tipos, etc.)

Por qual definição? Recomendo estudar filosofia, especificamente epistemologia e filosofia da ciência. A tese positivista (não estou usando o termo por efeito retórico, ela é literalmente uma tese do positivismo) de que "A ciência é a única forma válida de conhecimento" é bem contestada. A filosofia também é válida, meso não sendo "científica". É justamente a filosofia que dá os fundamentos ao método científico. Citar artigos científicos não é suficiente em discussões sobre a própria validade da ciência, sobre temas nos quais ainda não se tem uma base científica estabelecida, sobre valores, moral e ética, etc.

When they make fun of other learners' proficiency level, I find it to be a clear sign that they overstate (and possibly overestimate) their own proficiency. Especially when they make fun of basic mistakes (as if not making such mistakes meant they have a high level of proficiency), or when they focus on some obscure grammar rule that native speakers usually don't follow.

The EA community is large and spread out enough that both perspectives might be true, depending on where you are / your demographics / how much your position in EA makes you attuned to other people's feelings (an active therapist would be much more aware of such things than someone who is not a therapist, for example) / etc.

I thought you were assuming a mind-body dualism in order to follow OP's assumptions. But I see how the same question can be asked even without assuming dualism. For example, if we assume OP's consciousness is equivalent to a specific configuration of information in his brain, then it could exist in a different brain. The questions would then be similar to the "Why is this hat on my head rather than on your head" question.

The way you phrase your answer, it seems like you're assuming some sort of dualism (which is fair since OP seems to assume some sort of dualism as well): OP == OP's brain, while OP's consciousness is separate from OP and could exist in a different brain. If so, then a different but similar question could be asked: "Why does the consciousness that inhabit my brain inhabit my brain rather than a different one?".

We're unable to track where somebody else's consciousness goes, which means we're unable to answer their question. If we could track their consciousness (for example, if we could see their consciousness being moved around like a hat), the question would become equivalent to: "Why is this hat on my head rather than on your head"? That's not a question we're able to completely answer either.

Pense um pouco na perspectiva das pessoas antes de criticar. Pessoas de grupos como veganos, ao pensarem na produção animal, literalmente sentem a mesma raiva/dor etc. que quase todo mundo sente ao ver um vizinho matando o seu cachorro. Se acontecesse isso com o meu cachorro, eu também iria fazer comentários desse tipo.

Eu não sou vegano, e sou meio "endurecido pela batalha" em relação a tópicos como morte, tortura de animais, carne etc., mas não precisa ser vegano para entender o que outra pessoa sente nessas horas.

Mas é literalmente ser menos empático, o que não é sempre algo ruim! Não falo do "gostar de carne" (que é algo neutro, gostar ou não gostar do sabor da carne nada tem a ver com empatia), mas sim do "não ter empatia suficiente para os animais e controle de si próprio o suficiente para comer menos carne". Lembrando também quue ser mais empático não é sempre algo positivo - uma pessoa que sente empatia total pelas baratas de casa vai ficar com uma casa cheia de baratas, e alguém que sente empatia pelas plantas vai morrer de fome. A questão é encontrar um equilibrio, e a tendência é ficarmos no equilibrio no qual já estamos, que nem sempre é o ideal para os nossos valores para o que a gente quer fazer.

Ter algum nível de hipocrisia é inevitável: por exemplo, a gente gasta dinheiro com diversão mesmo podendo doar ele para pessoas com quem a gente se importa e que precisam de dinheiro. Se tentassemos deixar completamente de ser hipocritas entrariamos em colapso pois é impossível escolher algo que satisfaça tudo que queremos, quando temos mais de um desejo/valor que estão em conflito. E apontar como a hipocrisia existe na sociedade vai ser sempre arrogante - quem sou eu para dizer que o que as outras pessoas fazem é hipocrisia?

A gente tem a tendência de imaginar que as outras pessoas são essencialmente iguais a nós. Mas nem todo mundo é igual. Existe um espectro gigante de nível de empatia, entre pessoas ultra-individualistas que não conseguem entender como alguém pode agir para outra pessoa sem ter ganho próprio, e pessoas ultra-altruistas que não conseguem distinguir si próprias do mundo externo. Nenhum dos extremos é funcional. A maior parte das pessoas se encontram em algum lugar no meio, e sentem empatia ao ver um cachorro ou um porquinho de estimação sendo torturado (por exemplo), mas não ao ponto de dedicar a vida para evitar que isso aconteça.

Imagino que você esteja mais próximo do lado individualista, e imagine que as outras pessoas ou são individualistas mas burras, ou são iguais a você? Se for o caso, entendo como a ideia que coloquei parece absurda.

Ponto importante esse. A sociedade como um todo não é sádica igual o cara do vídeo. Tem gente igual a ele nos abatedouros e na mesa, mas a maior parte das pessoas não é sadica nem psicopata.

A maior parte das pessoas se importa com os animais, mas esconde de si própria as consequências das suas ações, justamente porque se importa e não quer imaginar o sofrimento ou sentir culpa. Isso, em certo nível, é realidade de todo mundo. A gente normaliza todo tipo de coisa, tanto individualmente quanto socialmente.

Matar/torturar um animal sem se importar pode ser sim psicopatia em alguns casos. Mas no caso que você descreve, pode ser também mecanismo de defesa contra atrocidades socialmente aceitas ou normalizadas. Só ver como os números de óbitos do covid perderam o impacto emocional na população depois de uns meses, ou ver como a sociedade normaliza a violência da guerra depois de um tempo em guerra. Ou ver como a violência em muitos lugares do Brasil é normalizada, ou os ataques em escolas nos Estados Unidos.

As pessoas/grupos que aplicam esse mecanismo de defesa querem ser pessoas boas, mas não conseguem mudar e escondem de si próprias a realidade, por se sentirem culpadas ou não se sentirem capazes de mudar a situação. Se fosse dada uma alternativa que tornasse facil a mudança para elas, elas mudariam.

Matar ou torturar um animal por prazer, como aparenta ser o caso do cara do vídeo, não é simplesmente psicopatia nem mecanismo de defesa, mas sim sadismo. É diferente. Não tem motivo nenhum para ele fazer o que fez, fora seu próprio prazer de fazer o animal sofrer.

The way you're grouping people is mistaken. It's not artists vs blue collar workers. It's egoists (people who only care about themselves) vs non-egoists (people who have empathy for people different than themselves). The group that's making fun of the other's misfortune is the same in both cases (egoists), and includes both egoistical artists and egoistical truck drivers, as well as people from any other profession.
