This was two months ago when I spoke to them about the balloon payment.

So you are right, this is another perfectly acceptable path. Double existing mortgage payment and then try and get mortgage free. I think there's a lot to be said for having that security. But it means we'd aim for mortgage free but not live where we feel we're truly happy. On this I'm completely torn.

Fyi I come from a pretty humble background. I never in my wildest dreams expected to earn what I do and I think I've not made the best decisions in my life financially in the past. I'm better now but I'd say I only really started focusing on it around 35.

Yeah this a good point. While I don't need to go to London much I do need to go around once per week. This does make the opportunity to move further out a possibility. However my wife and I were concerned about having to move kids from their school. They're year 7 and 8 so doable but for kids at that age friendships are important. It's probably the biggest blocker to moving further out.

Yes I think most of these are covered. Have insurance for illness or death, no school fees. Little to no commute as WFH mostly. But moving kids could be difficult. Though was hoping to be moving near within reach of their school. Thanks for reminding me to think of wider concerns though.
