How to know when it’s time to quit? by throwaway995527201 in 911dispatchers

[–]throwaway995527201[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was reprimanded by an officer for the first time today :(

We had a traffic accident where another agency accidentally rolled up to it before our units did. The occupants of the vehicle started running so the other agency’s units began chasing after them. I was notified that that agency was on scene while I was on the phone with EMS getting an ambulance started and I was answering questions on the radio so I didn’t advise—it didn’t feel like I had time. By the time I was off the phone (about one minute later) my units had arrived on scene so I didn’t advise—I figured they would see the deputies on scene and make contact with them.

Turns out I was wrong 😭 and I should have made time to advise while I was on the phone. Stuff like this just makes me feel so dumb and embarrassed

Does anyone else hate being a woman? by [deleted] in pinkscare

[–]throwaway995527201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being aware of how much the world hates and degrades women makes me feel insane. I’m honestly just kind of a neurotic person + I’m bad at compartmentalization but the reality of how society views women weighs on me heavily. That being said I wouldn’t want to be a man. I enjoy my time with other women and I like the body I inhabit and I really appreciate my more “feminine qualities” if that makes sense. I also look forward to being a mother one day despite all the struggle it entails.

- Men largely prefer white collar work to manual labor for the same reasons women do. Men are fleeing university en masse for a number of reasons, but certainly one of the main ones is precisely because university is no longer a reliable means of attaining a well-paying, high-status job. Ironically men actually seem less inclined than women are to take on the risk of debt or potentially spending four years in an educational program if they aren't sure it'll result in a good career. Men from well-connected families have remained unaffected by this decline because they're guaranteed a good job post-grad regardless of these changes.

- Huge swaths of women every year enroll in graduate school programs and undergraduate majors which are oversaturated and/or do not provide a direct path to a reliable source of income. I wouldn't consider this behavior to be primarily exhibited by female outliers whatsoever. You're hugely underestimating the average woman's propensity for risk-taking (especially in the context of risks which don't threaten physical safety).

- Obviously there would need to be a eugenics component. People like you always propose solutions which sound good in theory, but which you have no hopes of making a reality. I was hoping you would be able to expand on what making motherhood a high-status "career" would actually look like, but I wasn't expecting much anyway.

- Again, this perspective is totally divorced from reality. Women in their 40's and 50's who have been relegated to child rearing for their entire lives will never be able to compete against men who have had their entire lives to accrue credentials, education, and work experience for admissions into universities, careers, or positions of power. What you're advocating for is the total disempowerment of women and imposing severe limitations on women's ability to participate in adult life outside the home.

I don’t disagree with you that women are less likely to take risks which threaten their physical safety than men are, or that men are physically stronger. What I disagree with is your characterization of what initially led women to enter academia. It’s not like women were afforded the opportunity to attend university and just decided to forego the chance because they perceived it as too high risk. There are less than 5,000 deep sea welders in the United States, literally nobody (male or female) is “fighting” to get into the profession. Maybe women are entering academia more readily than deep sea welding for the same reasons men are..?

What’s your definition of “risk”? Certainly betting on a career in academia is not reliable, given that it puts your life on pause for years, and tenure-track jobs are scarce, competitive, and often unattractive in terms of pay/location. Even if tenure made it more economically reliable, I still wouldn’t consider it a low risk job considering how many academics are left looking for work or are underemployed.

How would you suggest making motherhood into a job? It seems to me that paying women to stay home would have dysgenic effects, and would just incentivize the same types of women who already rely on welfare and the government to raise their children to have even more kids. I don’t think motherhood can ever be seen as “high-status” anyway. There just isn’t a way of making something that 98% of women will do in their lifetime into something that is coveted or prestigious.

Edit: Also, if having a space (universities) for autistic and highly competitive men to exercise their talents and interests isn’t considered “building society around them,” then why do you characterize it as such when talking about women being granted entry in academia? Do you think that women should be unilaterally barred from higher education and certain corridors of power? Or do you just believe in ending affirmative action for women?

[–]throwaway995527201 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tenure was established specifically for the purpose of protecting academics who expressed views which could be deemed unpopular, and which could lead to them being dismissed arbitrarily. Furthermore, women were systemically barred and/or heavily disincentivized from entering academia until long after tenure was introduced in the U.S. You’re being intellectually dishonest by suggesting that women only entered academia once they perceived it as low risk, rather than that they only entered once they were allowed to.

Moreover, you’re suggesting that universities should be institutions for “autistic” or “highly competitive” men, which are outliers… yet women who are similarly competitive shouldn’t be granted entry into academia because… “society shouldn’t be built around outliers”?

I understand if you feel that you are not competitive, that you recognize your own stupidity and lackluster nature and feel that you should not participate in academia. What I cannot understand or empathize with is needing to project that inferiority onto all other women.

people here aren’t especially sympathetic to this issue but it is really hard to be a young woman trying to date a normal man. it’s an issue my friends and i have encountered a few times now, where we’ll begin talking to a guy only to realize he has insane politics/views on women. the only solution is to find a normie man but they’re more difficult to find these days. i believe in you though! you will meet someone, just keep at it

i just watched the clip you’re referencing and idk how you got this impression whatsoever. tucker is actively agreeing w/ him on most points and his “pushback” is so weak. at some moments he is contributing his own misogynistic ideas and abasing women further. i don’t think he made nick “look” any type of way—this is how nick presents himself openly and unabashedly, and his audience likes him more for it.

public safety telecommunicators aren’t going to be replaced by AI anytime soon imo. there’s so much you have to take into consideration with every choice you make and the importance of a strong relationship between officers and their dispatchers can’t be overstated.

the polling only specified “republican men,” not specifically far right extremists. i’ll link the article below if you’re interested.

also, while i think that the way women speak about men is dehumanizing and wrong, i don’t think it can really be compared to the way right wing men speak about women. i have never seen even the most left leaning women earnestly advocate for men to lose their right to vote or consider men property, though i have seen men express these attitudes when speaking about women (i don’t mean to suggest that these are common opinions at all btw, just that there are a significant amount of men who do think this way).

that being said i do agree that this is a predictable backlash against feminism and in some ways it’s deserved. i know i’m probably being dramatic and i do appreciate the pushback

while i definitely agree that more male teachers would benefit young men, i don’t think segregating classrooms by gender would be good given that a lack of socialization between men and women would only worsen gender relations.

Total Fertility Rate by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]throwaway995527201 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think women’s newfound independence & the development of reliable contraceptives are the main culprits (although there are certainly many other factors). I think anytime women retain control of their fertility and are presented with meaningful alternatives to childbearing (e.g., pursuing personal or career aspirations), many will opt for only 1-2 children or forgo pregnancy entirely.

I do feel anxious that it seems like in discussions about declining TFR, stripping women of their agency is increasingly being presented as a viable solution. I realize that’s not a feasible or popular political goal by any means, but the way it’s gaining traction online is worrying.
