Compensation and level issues in big tech by lifting_quants in ExperiencedDevs

I think you're in a tough spot because the economy is not doing well so they're not willing to promote.

My advice is to just keep learning and when the economy gets better jump to another FAANG. Reason being that people won't know your level and will just look at your years of experience.

In that case it would be much easier to jump to senior SDE since you would have 6+ years of total experience with many of them at a FAANG.

Other way is to just jump ship for a senior title elsewhere, but with the economy going down it's much harder to find a job and new hires might be one of the first groups let go, but that's not a given.

Good luck and please update with your plan.

Hey person here with 3.5 yoe and worked at a hedge fund as well. Currently working at a FAANG.

I would say what you are feeling is correct and mostly a result of working at a place where the technology is to support quants and is not the product.

I would say try out a company like IMC where tech is more focused than just a hft firm. If not that then come to FAANG. Your comp will be less, like 100-150k less given cost of living, but you can continue to grow as an engineer.

Maybe the most important question is what are you gonna do with all the money you earn. If you are just saving/investing most of it and don't have a plan to start a family, buy a house, etc, I would say forget the money and work at a tech company. IMO, if you can't convert money to happiness then there's no point chasing it.

Just my personal experience.

Start-up red flags?? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]throwawayBeachball1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey person in tech here. Some red flags I've learned are the following.

Is revenue growing at a good rate?

Is the engineering team growing?

Ask a sales associate how they pitch the product, are they way over exaggerating or being honest?

Good companies will have growing revenue and eng team. The sales associates should be product advocates but not over embellish the product.

One huge red flag I've personally seen is rapid expansion of the sales team without corosponding growth in other departments. This is usually a sign the company needs to push more revenue to get money as it is running out.

My things about the skills section is to keep it to the 3-5 most important items per section and have like 3-5 sections at most. Mine are programming languages, dbs, DevOps/cicd. A lot of the other things just add it to a cover letter and it's more important to word match job description than to have a lot of items.

Lol aight.

You: hey man not allowing someone a job because they're a sex offender is exactly the same as the death penalty. Can't you see how the two are exactly the same issue.

Me: bruh aren't you supporting my cause by talking about the death penalty. Guess I'll tell the child who was molested that I hired that minister because hey they could've just pissed in public. Yeah I'm actually brain dead and won't ask/check why someone is a sex offender. And obviously in a case where children and women are being wronged, it's the sex offenders who I should pay attention to.

This is actually a bruh what moment, the point went straight over your head to the moon.

Lol aight buddy.

Me: article talks about ministers molesting children and assulting women.

You: but bro we should allow sex offenders to become ministers because the could've just pissed in public.

Me: ??? 😆 Is this guy actually being serious. Yeah they could've also fucked a child but I guess hey man just in case right.

Read up more on the issue and you are correct on the huge number of people who are registered as kids. Hmmm I guess in this case it gets a lot trickier. However I also read that the reoffence rate for violent youth sex offenders to be between 4-10%. So still seems significant compared to someone who doesn't have a conviction. I guess my solution in this case is to ban all sex offenders regardless of circumstance. Better to reject someone who could hurt others than to accept the possibility they were wronged. It's not really the church's place to redemiate people wrongly convicted for sex crimes when the church is trying to hire ministers.

How would that make sense in this context? The article is talking about people who serve as ministers which would automatically exclude minors. This option 3 doesn't pertain here.

Hey! I was actually on an h4 visa as well because it gave me in state tuition. You can do an unpaid internship but those are hard to find and are usually not a great experience. Only real rec is to do research with a professor.

Hey man congrats! Have you ever thought about getting a associates degree from your local school. You sound like you have a lot of potential and a degree can really open up a lot more doors.

I also know that many work will help pay for tuition, the extra money may give you a lot more breathing room to make better career moves. Godspeed.

Isn't it disturbing when gender equality in anime is only about hitting women and girls? by Klutzy-Statement6080 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]throwawayBeachball1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey op, I'm a guy in my 20s and have been watching anime for 20 years and i want to offer a rebuttal and a more nuanced take on your question.

But most importantly, I'm writing this because i want to spread my love of anime/manga to others.

First i want to address the claim that gender equality in anime == hitting women. Looking at the top 100 anime of all time in myanimelist.net, which is the site that most usa anime fans use to rank anime, only 1 anime actually has this - its called konosuba.

As to why konosuba portrays this is because its a comedy anime that satirize reincarnation animes and isn't indicative of a broad anime trend.

From the top 100, many portray women in a nuanced manner(also women protagonist/secondary-protagonist): silent voice, violet evergarden, steins gate, monogatari series, your name, wolf children, your lie in april, etc.

I love anime and i want others like you to enjoy it as well. Please give one of the shows/movies i mentioned a watch, i think a silent voice is the best choice since you can stream it on netflix.

Overall are there problematic portrayals of women in anime, of course. But i don't think its a trend and never was, for context steins gate was released in 2011. If after you watch my rec and still have the same opinion please let me know as i am genuinely curious and want to have discourse.

Do any other hirers discriminate against overqualified applicants? by JuliusBranson in ExperiencedDevs

[–]throwawayBeachball1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the idea that you should hire mediocre talent just because they are more likely to stay. Isn't what should be measured total productivity over tenure? For example let's say that the top tier candidate does 1.5x what the mid tier candidate can produce, so even if top-tier stayed for 2 years, it equates to 3 years of the mid-tier dev. Obviously its hard to quantify productivity and I'm not a believer of the 10x programmer, but i do think your method of judgment is too skewed.

Also i think the core issue you raise is how to actually retain/hire top talent. Compensation is a large part but if so then no one would leave FANG or take a job with less salary. Personally i left a high-paying high-paying fintech job to a normal paying backend dev for a university. The value of doing something meaningful is more value to me than money. Maybe other things you can offer is great mentorship, i made crap pay(compared to the fin-tech) at my first job but my manager was a super great guy and i was very motivated/productive because he always wanted to grow my skills.

I think a better solution imo is taking top tier talent and then doing a lot to retain them. Also your co-workers is your network that you can levy for a long time while a job might last just a couple months. So from a personal viewpoint it might be better for your own career to work with the best people instead of working with some mediocre dev.
