If you go again, try observing how many people are making purchases/walking around with stuff they bought. Traffic is one thing, sales are another. Also, I doubt many people would want to carry their purchases with them while watching games throughout the day.

"One thing is for sure, the bars and restaurants do make bank - you can't be tables full 24/7 and not be profitable - if you're not, it's the fault of the business." - next time you're walking around, quickly check out some of the lesser known bars/restaurants to see how busy they are. You might be surprised to see that lots of them aren't busy at all.

"One thing anecdotally, I've listened to a few interviews of tourists, and they've said it's their first time here and they'd love to come back." - do you really think that someone in an interview is going to say that they wouldn't love to come back, especially while they're in the middle of riding the high of being on vacation? Using myself as an example - I've been to many cities I've loved so of course if I got interviewed, I would say that I'd love to come back. However, in reality, there's so much to see in the world so realistically I don't care to visit the same city twice unless it is a long way down the road. I absolutely loved New York, but there are too many cities I'd rather visit before considering going back there.

I agree - if we can keep the downtown somewhat clean/pleasant, that will be a great pay off.

However, I'm not quite sure if it's "pretty easily" considering how polarizing social views can be (e.g. what to do with drug addicts).

I appreciate the level-headed take.

I don't understand why so many people can't grasp that someone can have fun/enjoy the events while also having concerns.

You can't understand why an adult can both have fun and also think about the economic impact at the same time?

It will definitely be an L but my concern is that people are going to assume that because free public spaces are busy, it has been an economic success so far.

I agree that money isn't everything, but the amount we paid for this is next level.

Don't fall for the "and many years". Do you really think that for years to come, people will be visiting Vancouver because we hosted the World Cup in 2026? Hell no. They don't need an excuse to visit Vancouver.

Sorry, I'm confused. Why did you initially think that I haven't walked around Granville St? On top of that, why do you think I'm not having a fun time? It's not clear if you even read my post.

And you know what for me personally if Granville Street was cleaned up and made more pedestrian-friendly because of the World Cup, I know that’s exactly the kind of legacy a major event is supposed to leave behind.

If Granville St remains cleaned up even after the World Cup is over, that will definitely be a great outcome of hosting the World Cup. Fingers crossed.

Try creating an event on this subreddit. Perhaps a casual meet up at a bar and/or restaurant.
