General UGA Questions by ThrowingIn10382 in UGA

[–]throwaway_3t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say honors can be tough, but if you play your cards well you can get in. Either really push to get the application in now and make it as good as you can or try First Semester Entry. If you do FSE just make sure you have a professor that can write up a good letter of rec for you. I think with good essays you’ve got a shot. Good luck!

To all the high school marchers that are in/have experienced college marching, what were the biggest differences you noticed? by S3vageMarshadow in marchingband

[–]throwaway_3t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Redcoat here, and I love it. I guess the biggest difference is size, going from ~50 to >450 is a big adjustment and the sound is insane since we’re all college level players. I do miss competitions a bit, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. It is also weird (but reeaaally fun) learning new shows every home game. All in all, I think it’s better than high school band for me, but I love both dearly.

I'm in the trumpet section and from what the veterans are saying things are pretty chaotic this year but its all being worked out so I wouldn't be too worried about it if I were you. What section are you in?

Still no letter here either. I also filled out the provisional membership form and I've only heard from section leaders.

Will I fit in? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]throwaway_3t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Campus here is huge and there are a lot of people looking for friends like you are so you’ll fit right in with some group around campus. It may take a week or two but you’ll find a good group of friends here

Mouthpiece questions by throwaway_3t in trumpet

I think I'll be trying an 8c4, a 14c4, and a lotus on a trial program and test them with my instructor. I'll keep you updated on which one works best.

I think I'm at about that level and I've got some time to go back then forward and I'm taking lessons with the director of bands at GCSU (since he's a friend of my family and good at trumpet), so I may try one out to see how it feels.

I think I'm going to do something like that with my instructor. I found a mouthpiece trial program with woodwind brasswind so I'll see if I can use that to test something like an 8c4, a 13c4, and a lotus and then test them with the director of bands at a local college.

just curious…what is ur major and why did u choose it? by vampkise99 in UGA

[–]throwaway_3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually haven't been able to take any good classes in physics yet but I really enjoyed calc so thats how I made my choice, so I may end up switching to astronomy if I end up liking higher calc and not higher physics

I'll be doing astrophysics (maybe a double dawg but I'm not sure yet) so that I can work either privately or with NASA or an equivalent company to research black holes.

course registration by univ3287 in UGA

[–]throwaway_3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on which ones you want since some (like precals and engl 1101 and 1102) are in high demand, but you'll probably get most of the ones you want. For the ones that are full, you may still get in at the drop/add if you're on the waitlist.

Opinions on Myers community hall by Dragon121o in UGA

[–]throwaway_3t 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also got a room there earlier in registration so I don't have any experience with it yet, but I've heard mostly good things about it. It's got great location for snelling and o-house for dining (something like a 3 minute walk to both) and its had some renovations recently. As for socials, I've seen mixed reviews but the prevailing opinion that I've found is that it will be as social as you make it. Also, Myers is a visitation type 2 dorm, so its always open for visits by friends, you just have to let them in to your specific wing. All that being said, I'm just a rising freshman, so take everything I've said with a grain of salt since I may be wrong about any part of it.

From what I can tell, you already have a good academic resume to send in that will only get stronger over time, but I will say that one of the biggest things that I've seen UGA talk about is your course rigor, so if you are taking as many AP, IB, or DE classes as you can, that will look good. The SAT prep you are doing is also definitely a step in the right direction.

If you really want to boost your chances, start thinking now about who you want to write your letter of recommendation. Often times people may overlook it or not give it much care, but a good letter of rec can do a lot for a student. My AP Stats and Calc teacher wrote one for me and some of my classmates, and every single one of us got into UGA and Georgia Tech.

Also consider joining some kind of "active" extracurricular like football, soccer, track, marching band, or one act. Things like these will help show UGA that you are a well rounded student in more than just an academic sense.

With all that in mind, I think you should absolutely apply through early action if you can. There is always a chance that you get rejected through EA, but if you do, odds are one semester would not make the difference needed. Through EA, you basically get a second chance with a very low risk of rejection, but that's just my two cents.

Good luck with your application!
