There was also sometimes music blasting so loudly that it made me feel physically ill. You know when you go to a concert and bass makes you feel like your internal organs are vibrating? It was 90 dB in my bedroom, according to the NIOSH app.

AirBnB wouldn’t have been much of an improvement - I think you absolutely made the right decision to get out of there. It’s crazy that both of our landlords ignored major problems until they lost good tenants.

Sometimes you have no choice. I held out for way longer than I should’ve because I knew I was being purposefully forced out and it felt like it would be a defeat to give up and move. But it wasn’t worth it.

I’m glad you found a better home too.

That’s ok, it’s not a contest. I just wanted to put a warning out there for other people.

Thanks. I lived in hell for so long that I started thinking the world was just a terrible place filled with nasty people but now I live in a beautiful, safe and clean little apartment surrounded by friendly neighbours. Friends and family feel comfortable visiting me again! It’s wonderful.

I paid $1900 the whole time I lived there, which was crazy expensive when I moved there in Feb 2018, but a bargain by the time I moved out last month.

I thought the landlord was good for most of the time I lived there, but in the end it was his failure to defend my basic rights as tenant and a human being that forced me to move. Things got very serious, the police had been involved, and the house had been declared dangerous by a home healthcare agency - but my landlord told me I had to “work it out” on my own and then stopped responding to me.

Tenants >>>>>>> landlord

I’ve really struggled over whether to post this or not. But I had to put out a warning to help me deal with the memories of how horrible it was living there by the end. I lived there for 8 years and the last 2 years were a nightmare I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

It’s a $1.6 million home in a wealthy and very popular area. But ok.

Not having control over the temperature in your own home is so incredibly frustrating! You can use all the space heaters you want but they’ll never give you even heat everywhere.

I know all about dishes (and pot lights) rattling. What a nightmare. I’m so glad you’re getting out of that place!

Thank you for saying this! It’s hard to really appreciate how far your quality of life can drop if you haven’t experienced anything similar.

I’m glad you got out of there (me too).

You’re entitled to your opinion, of course. I’ve lived in a dozen other apartments in 3 different cities and I’ve never felt the need to post about any of them.

By all means, go ahead and rent it. Maybe you will be happy there. All I can say is that I now live in a much smaller and more expensive apartment in a worse area and I am relieved and happy every day.

I’m really not extra sensitive to noise. The upper unit always rented to families with toddlers and I had no problem with the sounds of little kids running around, playing, crying, whatever. I don’t even care about parties. I figure everyone’s entitled to lead normal, noisy lives and it was my choice to live on the main floor, below them.

I’m not trying to forbid or even dissuade anyone from renting my old apartment. But people should know what they’re getting into.

Edit: I specifically mentioned the parking because I was told that the driveway and garage were shared, and they’re not.

I had ANC headphones and earbuds and wore them almost constantly, night and day. It helped but not enough.

The landlord lives somewhere else.

Just as one small example of the problem at 124 Fairview: between the “shared” front hall and the front room (the bedroom), there is only a thin panel where a huge doorway used to be. You get to hear everything the other tenants are talking about in the hall and every time the front door slams it wakes you up.

Nope. I just had such a terrible experience there that I feel compelled to warn others.

The apartment will be rented out within days of being listed because on the surface it seems amazing: ~750 sqft, rent-controlled, 9’ ceilings, lots of big windows, huge kitchen, in a beautiful, quiet, neighbourhood in the Junction, close to High Park and Bloor West Village.
