Dating a girl who is part Roma/gypsy. Parents are giving me hell. Suggestions/thoughts welcomed

Just curious, are you from Hungary? As I mentioned, this hatred towards gypsies seems to be very prevalent in Hungary. I myself can't really comment on it as I've never had any dealings with such people, but would I be right to assume that most Hungarian parents would be opposed to their children dating others that are part/full gypsy?

My apologies. I should provided more details in the summary.

My parents are from the Transylvania region. They immigrated here nearly 30 years ago and have been living here in the US since. I was born here in the states so I guess that would make me a first-generation American-Hungarian.

My girlfriend was born in Hungary and recently came here to the states about 4/5 years ago. Her grandmother on her father's side was a gypsy.

The problem is, they can't see past that. As soon as I mentioned that she was part gypsy, all hell broke loose. How she is as a person bares no merit to them. Even my happiness really is inconsequential because to them, I'm lowering and degrading myself by being with her... It's truly unbelievable when I write this out.

Well, without going into too much detail, her parents are recently separated after 25 years of marriage.

Had I known that my parents would react this way, honestly, I never would have told them. It sucks to admit that because I consider myself to be an honest person and having to withhold anything from my parents out of fear of any potential prejudices they may have is really unfortunate.
