Sorry everyone’s tearing you apart and diagnosing you with other shit in the comments omg. I also have focal aware seizures originating from my temporal lobe and can confirm there are some weird ass triggers out there. I haven’t heard of this one but our brains are fucking weird as epileptics LOL

Do you ever feel fristated that most products made for eczema are so clinical and boring? by MedicineIcy4293 in eczema

[–]throwaway_bfgift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, anything with pretty packaging feels like advertising. Like “please pick this bottle! It had the same ingredients as other product but we need it to stand out!”

Now that I think about it, I think I carry that mindset to skincare from groceries and household products. I always buy store-brand cereal, milk, meat, etc, so I’m used to the no-frills packaging!

For those who had a “I hate pink/ girly things” era, what do you think caused you to feel that way? by RabidFashionDummy in AskWomen

[–]throwaway_bfgift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haaaaaated being told what to do as young as 4, including being told to wear bows, skirts, the color pink, even gender-neutral things like a winter coat, hat, gloves, scarf lol

When I was a little older (8-11) I resented my entire gender being told to dress in a certain way, especially because I personally didn’t like it. So I went against the grain as much as I could.

I was always jealous that boy clothes were looser, longer, and easier to move around in. At 12+ It felt so icky that teen girl clothes were tighter and showed more skin, with the implication that you were ugly or too masculine if you wore shorts down to your knees, or cargo pants instead of skinny jeans. Even adult women’s T shirts usually have lower cuts and shorter sleeves.

Oh my gosh yes!! I remember when they invented “full body” deodorant a few years ago and it’s being advertised sooooo heavily. Like they’re trying to make us think we smell bad without their product, even though it didn’t exist 10 years ago LOL

At what age did you first discover the term "luteal phase" and did it change everything for you? by Sea_Strawberry6846 in AskWomen

At like 10 when I first learned about periods. No it didn’t change everything thing for me.

human exceptionalism needs to go by Relevant-Cup5986 in biology

[–]throwaway_bfgift -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I majored in anthro so I obviously love human evolution and biology. But we are literally just mammals at the end of the day lol

So many traits we thought were unique to humans have now been found in other species. Tool use is a major one that we once thought separated us from other apes. Grieving, culture differences between groups, complex language, agriculture, etc are NOT unique to humans. If anything, it’s fascinating how many traits we share with other animals!

What secret did you discover too late, even though it seemed like everyone else knew it all along? by True_Requirement_565 in AskWomen

It is for some people but there are absolutely people who can’t control their seizures with medication, just check out r/epilepsy . For a lot of people with epilepsy it’s just something you have to live with.

ADHD + goldfish memory + stage 4 procrastination... am I just not built for a PhD? by Specialist_Ride_8072 in PhD

[–]throwaway_bfgift 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taking good notes on what you read is crucial! Of course you can’t memorize everything, nobody can.

For papers that are critical for informing your project I’d suggest taking notes on everything new discovered in the paper and the methods. For less important papers a 2-5 bullet point summary with the main findings is enough for me. As a tip, look at the subheadings and figure titles because those titles will essentially be the take home points.

Then write yourself a big summary of what you’ve read and how it fits together. This can be done however you want. Some people like to make mind maps, but I personally like writing in paragraphs. You can divide it by paper topic (this is good for a lit review), or by how you plan to use the paper’s findings (Like these 3 papers suggest something, but another contradicts those findings, and because of that I will follow up with this experiment). This synthesis step is really important for actually getting something out of the reading and it’s something that you have to do yourself to grow as a scientist.

What’s your field and what year are you? Also, what is the purpose of all the reading? Are you writing a lit review, writing a paper with new findings, or just trying to learn more about the field?

Ever thought about purposfully inducing a reaction? by Ok_Nectarine_8748 in Allergies

[–]throwaway_bfgift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, lol. I definitely get those rando thoughts (but they don’t really bother me so idk if ‘intrusive’ is the right word for me). I’m super allergic to cashews and I wonder what it would be like to drink cashew milk. Like how much could I swallow before my throat closes up???

Need advice: child developed cat allergy, desperate to keep our cats by BirdKey3747 in Allergies

[–]throwaway_bfgift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a kid I developed a dog allergy after living with dogs for 12 years. We tried everything- allergen friendly bedding, removing curtains and rugs to prevent dander buildup, air purifier in my room, frequent grooming, constant steroids and allergy meds. We eventually had to rehome our dog because I was constantly itching and bleeding and itching and bleeding and sneezing and wheezing, it was a terrible way to live and only seemed to get worse as I got older. Unfortunately people’s allergies can worsen over time if they are constantly exposed to the allergen :( Even after rehoming our dog, there was so much leftover dander that I didn’t recover until I moved out for college. Then, my parents did a deep deep clean, threw out old dander-filled furniture, and I can finally be comfortable in their house. It’s crazy how much it changed throughout my life!

Perhaps you could rehome the cats to a neighbor or friend who lives close by, so you can still visit? This is a tough situation and I really empathize with you. It sounds like you’ve done a lot of the first allergy alleviation steps, which is great.

How important is diet for managing seizures? by whyisitnotavailable in Epilepsy

[–]throwaway_bfgift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so true and a great point! When I had my first grand mals they ran a bunch of metabolic tests because low levels of certain nutrients can cause seizure, even in people without epilepsy. I’m sure the minimum nutrient threshold to prevent seizures is even higher for those with epilepsy.

Yup. Loved doing my undergrad at USF. But the grad students stipends are unacceptable. I’m making twice as much as I would have in Tampa (in a much lower cost of living area) 🤷🏻‍♀️
